My husband's grandfather, Czech but conscripted to the Austro-Hungarian army in 1919, surrendered with his unit on the Eastern front. He worked in a shipyard in what is now Ukraine, before returning to his wife and infant son, my husband's father, at the end of the war. His family line continued.

This war of 53 fascist countries against Russia turned a real blessing for Russia. Russia has boosted its economy by 3.5% and its military industry 7-fold (700%) and become the World Military and Nuclear Power Number One with a lot of new super advanced technologies in all areas from Cosmos to transport , farming, construction , Hypersonic , super advanced EM Warfare, 87 drone factories etc etc etc.
It has been an excellent opportunity to test new weapons and also determine which ones dont work. It has really shown how the face of war has changed with new technologies such as drones and electronic warfare. Russia will be much much stronger into the future.

25th Disband. This is NOT the first time, the 25th is the oldest Ukrainian unit dating back to the Soviet army. In initial 2014 Donbas uprising, Kyiv sent it to end the pro-Russian uprising, as the 25th refused to drive over civilians lying in the road doing Gandi-style peace protests, it was disbanded in disgrace. However, it was later restored and reorganized..

Funny thing is that we already know what happens in the next main battle.
Step 1) Ukraine says it’s a fundamental city, strategically important.
Step 2) They say they will defend it to the last Ukrainian.
Step 3) Russia encircles it and opens a new franchise of the meat grinder.
Step 4) When the meat grinder is working, Ukraine sends everything they have to be destroyed by it.
Step 5) When the situation is critical, Zelenskyy sends even more bodies to the meat grinder.
Step 6) When they lose the battle, they say they will retreat to preserve the lives of the soldiers.
Step 7) Ukraine says that the city is irrelevant and was never strategically important.
Step 8) New city, new battle, repeat steps 1-7.
Step 5.5 is Zelensky randomly shows up for photo and pins some models on a few chests...THEN FLEES back to Kiev
And then they say that they only have 13,000 lost fighters with constant mobilization, and in addition they talk and complain that they need 500,000 new ones as soon as possible...

Looks like the Zelensky regime is undertaking the denazification process required by the RF, just not officially.
Notably the Azovs pulled the same "pull out and leave the other units behind" stunt at Adviivka and one wonders if Kiev is showing the rest of the AFU that right sector thugs are unreliable comrades in preparation for their neutering.
I don't think there'll be a Night of the Long Knives, even though the idea of the Azov's copping that is attractive, but I do think that come negotiations Kiev will be able to point to a general denazification of the AFU in some respects at least on the surface.
Of course after the constant shelling of civilian areas by the AFU and Kiev trying to pin the Azov's butchering at Bucha on Russia I don't think Moscow is going to swallow any of that 'Clean Wehrmacht' crap.
Added note. Chasiv Yar is eerily turning into another Avdiivka with Russians gaining the flanks of the city. We know how that turned out for the defenders.

I can understand why the commander of the 25th Brigade surrendered. They have no good options as their facing annihilation from the Russians. Not sure of the composition of this Brigade but having witnessed what happened in Avdiivka they probably took copious notes and decided that surrender was the best option. It was either that or a casket.
