“…A well married man…” I used to read to my wife in the late evenings. We both have our ailments. Mine was deadly and is mostly gone now. Hers is slow and permanent and not likely to catch Death’s “eye.” We started with Anne of Green Gables. Finished all of those. They kept us reading for quite a while. Then I read Sir Pratchett’s books to my wife. Every single one. We sang through them. We were… Well, you already know. That’s what we were. All those things. I stopped reading to her after that. Nothing else can top it. So now I think we’ll start over. We’re both still ‘standing,’ and only poetry remains. Because what else could follow Discworld? So back to Discworld!
Hard to believe that I read only a few if his books in my 20s , but something told me to save them for later. I will be retiring in March. Is it a coincidence that I stumbled on this video today? I think not!! It's time💚💚💚
I was a student when STP died, studying creative writing. My lecturer came in and said "ladies and gentleman, there is no lecture today, Terry Pratchett has passed away." We went home in shock, over 200 of us leaving the lecture hall in silence. Unlike any other cancelled lecture nobody went the pub, we all went back and read some pratchett.
i gotta ask. how do you know for sure nobody went to the pub? i assume you didn't go because you went and read pratchett. but since you didn't, you couldn't see whether or not anybody else did.
Death must have had an interesting chat with that man when the time for the appointment came up... farewell Terry, hope you enjoy the rest of the trip.
AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER. Terry took Death’s arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night. Latest tweets on Sir Terry's twitter account
This man was and still is my absolute idol and I'm 74! No one but no one can construct a sentence like Terry did. His genius will live with us and future generations for ever. I was in tears when he was taken ridiculously early on his creative life and will remember him and his humour until the last. The world is a poorer place. GK.
Im sixteen and discovered Sir Terry Pratchett a bit over two years ago now. I was eight when he passed. I never got to live in the same world with him and be aware of this good fortune (or the four lettered she who starts with L). And being - not being, rather- all that, I can safely confirm that his work, full of life, joy, imagination and thought, is a masterpiece of the sort that wouldnt fade so fast. Over time, I have also loved and lost. And I am grateful.
There is no one changed my life this much since I discovered Queen in 1985. I only discovered Discworld about 5 years ago and have read every book at least three times each since then! STP was simply the greatest writer I have ever had the pleasure to read. I don't think he should ever be dismissed as just a 'fantasy' writer as he was so much more. A satirist, humourist, anthropologist, realist, romanticist, dramatist and so many other 'ists'. He held up a mirror to humankind and told us the truth about ourselves and about life and death. As a musician I look to the likes of Queen, Beatles and others for influence and inspiration but as writer I wish I could assume even one tenth of Sir Terry's genius, one tiny part of his intelligence and insight. As there will never be another Freddie, there will certainly not be another Terry Pratchett either! Both men fought against illnesses that ultimately killed them, both men gave their best work and the most of themselves from the moment they each understood their respective fates. Both are ultimate examples of human spirit and genius! RIP.
I only discovered Discworld about 5 years ago and have read every book at least three times each since then! ...that's a lot of reading, mate... respect.
I loved his books, I still do! When he died I cried like I lost someone near and dear. I hope the Death took him to the Discworld so he could live there forever as he does in our hearts.
Absolute silence from the audience till the chuckle at the end, an honestly interested host and a fantastic guest. We all lost out when we lost him. GNU Terry Pratchett.
I sat with The Shepherd's Crown on my night stand for over a week untouched. I desperately wanted to read it, but I knew that once it was read the story was over. No other author has shaped me the way STP has and I'm so grateful for his works.
I’ve seen his books in the Science Fiction/Fantasy section for decades but I never picked one up until COVID. I’m making up for lost time. Discworld has joined Xanth and Pern as one of my favorite worlds to escape to.
Ok, so I clicked on this, I knew it would be Sir Terry but even so when he said his name, I burst into tears. Apparently I'm still not ok. Maybe I need to go read Nation again, just to sob out my feelings.
"Cut of your jib" refers to the smaller sale on a boat/ship, as traditionally would be cut to conform to the sailor's instructions, not a standardised form. 😃
You know, I started reading him like 2 months ago. In just that time, the amount of personality he puts in his writing is beautiful, you just feel like he is a friend. I really hope the actually is an afterlife, as an atheist just to have theboportunity to have a coffee with him.
I started reading Pratchett when i was 14 and have been re-reading all of the books at a steady pace year after year. One thing i noticed is that the older i get, the books nuances change more and more. Each time i find something new, some new meaning and a new tone that adds to the picture. THAT is amazing writing. And in addition, it is my personal observation that one must re-read a book at least three times. It is all laughter and joy the first time, just slight giggles the second, and pure tears the third time.
I have the feeling that Alzimers and dementia Have been with us forever, we just call them different things. Its a disgrace that in the 21st centuary that we will treat a dog with dignity but we treat a loved one who needs to move on with a trial and possible incarceration.
I just found out about terry because of Rob Wilkins book, I am 4 books in to discworld and I love them so much already, I wish I could have gone to a signing or something, I feel the loss x
I only discovered Terry Pratchett last year, I read 3 books from discworld only, and i already feel like I know the man, this interview made me cry, RIP legend. -No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away
look ta him at the end, what a humble man. "Death, he's kind" he says. This reminds me of a thought written in a church where I live: "Death, he's no tapping you on the shoulder and tells you to come with him. He's taking you in his arms and holds you until you can't think of anything else than, yes I cam come with you." I hope it's true...
It did, he just sublimized it instead of letting it burden him. Going Postal was written right after his diagnosis and it's full of anger against life and everything and it's, subjectively, the best Discworld novel ever.
The colour of magic was the 1st book that was shoved into my hand, i was 23ish and until then i had never imagined that there was any real reason to look outside of the factory i worked in .. when granny weatherwax realised she was dying i couldn't help but think Terry was transferring his decline to this wonderful nutjob😊
This man had the greatest imagination and was able through his genius to incorporate social and human behaviours, into his brilliant books. Was taken to early.
Oh, his mom was "pushy" and paid him to read when he was a child? My mother told me I should stop reading all the time when I was merely sitting in the car or in the hospital halls to pass the time - after I already had graduated from university. And there was no "humour" and no "accuracy" in the assessment that I would be reading too much or all the time, it was pure hostility against the fact that I was reading to pass the time waiting in a friggin hospital (for my own purposes). And she did this right next to another person, completely sure that her arbitrary insanity would be deemed normal (rather than the crass opposite of the twee, positive cliché). This is just to say, there are very _different_ kinds of pushiness, clearly, and such people exist... My bafflement has never ceased at that person, so this is basically the kind of thing that comes to mind.

Beautiful comment.
The best friend I never met
We shake his hand upon every pop-over to the disc we take, just as I think he wanted it.
Absolutely... I miss him so much
We'll all meet him in the desert under the endless night and we'll embrace like old friends

A great loss to the world of literature - I enjoyed everything he wrote. May you rest in peace Mr. Pratchett!

Hear hear.
An amazing man. GNU Sir Terry Pratchett, I hope your conversation with Death was everything you desired.
Absolute silence from the audience till the chuckle at the end, an honestly interested host and a fantastic guest. We all lost out when we lost him. GNU Terry Pratchett.
indeed, I thought the same. A realy respectful interview..

It’s the only book of his I haven’t re-read.
Terry still aten’t dead and the turtle still moves. Use the lessons he gave you and he still lives in this world.
What a guy. Went to a fairly religious school, but read pratchett on the bus.
Guess which philosophy i favor ;-)
The Gods made man, and he hasn't been happy about it ever since.

STP: Never!
Loved this interview.
I love you man. I love you so much Terry and wish you were still here. GNU.
GNU Sir Terry: a prime specimen of _Pan narrans_ ...♥
Damn that steamroller. Damn it to hell.
Sir Terry Pratchett, what can one say! Such a huge loss to his family, such a huge loss the world!

I felt such a profound sense of loss at the announcement of his death and HOW it was announced
Miss Him. Sad that I didn’t know his work until he had become ill. A truly beautiful person with the best imagination and humour

May you be with those you admired in the past. We will join you soon and listen to your fascinating essays and stories.
That was actually quite moving.
why is the interviewer not familiar with at least some of the books? The ignorance about the personification of Death is very annoying.....
GNU Terry Pratchett
I miss him so much, yet never met him.
Amazing guy. Love how nothing fazed him.

I've got tears in my eyes at the end... I miss you STP
This interviewer does not know how to listen and has clearly not read a single one of his books.

Brilliant man.
Im very curious, whats the name of the cottage he names at around 2:02?
