  • Nagito Komaeda is one of the most popular characters in the series... and somehow he's also one of my least favorite characters. So let me try to explain myself in perhaps the most biased video I've ever produced on this channel.
This video was made across three time zones, four states, on six hours of sleep, and in 115 degree heat. So realize that this is all in good fun and don't take my opinions too seriously.

I agree with the whole "Nagito gets too much content" as someone who's all-time favorite characters of any media are Gundham Tanaka & Angie Yonaga there's so little merchandise or official backing of these characters that it hurts. It's not even that Gundham isn't popular (compared to the latter especially), but just that the series has an extreme bias to Junko, Chiaki, Nagito and Kokichi.
I also adore Mahiru so I'm extra-extra hurt that she gets no love.

I'm on the ground of going from "Wow I hate Komahina so much please save my child from Komaeda" to "hmm they're kinda spicy (psychologically)" to "Okay I love them they're my OTP now" and mostly due to the amount of SPLENDID fan contents from Japanese/Korean/Chinese fandoms. I rarely see they downplay the mental illness aspect of Komaeda and his creepiness around other people and Hinata specifically and the potential of post-game Komahina work their shit out (with Hinata giving Komaeda a therapy or something) is massive. The shipablily of them mostly comes from how there are SO many of types of dynamics for them (like high school besties, angsty rivals, mortal enemies, "i hate you but i actually don't hate you THAT much I still care about you", "We'll be civil once you work your shits out Komaeda" etc). But when the shippers baby Komaeda and just use Hinata as a poster boy for "making Komaeda happy" person, that's when I get uncomfortable.
Komaeda to me is neither a good nor bad person. He's so self-deprecating while also so arrogant. He views EVERY ONE on his own scale of values, deeming them either hopeful or not. One thing about at least 4 murderers in sdr2 is that they're not deciding to murder of out of their own decision. Hanamura was manipulated into killing because Komaeda literally gave him NO choice (Hanamura literally was gonna tell every one but Komaeda was like yeah sure but I'm not gonna stop until I cause a murder), Tsumiki wasn't even in her mind when she did her deeds, Pekoyama acted out to protect Kuzuryuu from execution and hell, Nanami wasn't even aware she killed someone. But Komaeda never views the other killers as people who gets pulled into murdering, but if he could see any hope from them. What's different from Hanamura killing for returning to his mom, Pekoyama killing to protect Kuzuryuu and Tsumiki (despair) killing for the sake of Enoshima? Hell even Tanaka (and Nidai) decided to risk their own lives for other students. Yet Komaeda quickly devalued Hanamura once he gave up on defending himself and had to ask Komaeda for help, dismissed Tanaka's motive and outright ignore Pekoyama, only focus on Kuzuryuu's reaction. And he viewed Tsumiki's actions as full despair. All of them killed for someone else, what is the line between hope and despair for Komaeda? And WHY is he so sure that the only TRUE hope would be born from his death alone? Like, he was outright disappointed that Koizumi died, not because well, she died, but because the killer didn't kill HIM and/or meet him before. He hates himself but he also values himself so much, the only true hope in his eyes is that it has to be approved by HIM. Hell, he's desperate to try and recreate another Naegi-Enoshima situation because he didn't get to witness it in person. He's pretty interesting as character but very hateful as a person ngl, and I TOTALLY sympathize with the students when they tried so hard to avoid or retain him (which is why I wanted to punch Souda when he implied that he trusted Komaeda, the one who kickstarted everything, more than Hinata, the only one who kept their heads on their necks because he didn't withhold information for fun like Komaeda the past class trials, especially case 3).
One thing I disagreed with you is that Nanami is the only one nice to Komaeda. Quiet contrary actually. She's one of the people that told him to shut up most frequently. She views his actions in chapter 5 as nuisances, got tired of him rambling, called his ruse to prove Hinata's innocence a "waste of time". She's just tired of him as much as every one else, hell, the only reason she stopped Owari from snapping the heck out of Komaeda's neck is for Owari's sake alone. She soothed Owari out instead of the guy who just got strangled lol. So yeah, the only reason I ship Komahina is the angstTM and Hinata is maybe, the most tolerant of him out of every one (maybe Sonia too because she's a saint), it takes saint's patience to not slap the shit out of Komaeda every time he opened his mouth.
Komaeda is one character I love to analyze just to dunk on him, and the only thing that's hot about him is his VA and his mf jacket (sir you are on a fucking island)

Komaeda isn't very likable the whole game through, while actually playing it. It's not that he's strictly unlikable though, like you mentioned with Celeste, Komaeda is completely unapologetic in his actions. His value system is fundamentally incompatible with reality. He compares life and death to the exciting struggle of watching the hero of a manga, or your favorite boxer on their journey to become the best. His perception of the value of life comes from how much "hope" it can inspire, which is less about human values and more about narrative values and entertainment. He thinks people should be interesting, exciting, dramatic, emotional, etc. He doesn't really care about their happiness or their own beliefs or anything, just how well they can play a dramatic character for others to observe. In that sense, I don't think he's very unlikable in his clear evil, he's just, wrong, about reality.
In some ways, one could argue that Komaeda is acting for the greater good, but of course, this is also an amusing contradiction. Komaeda's character conception, which was then taken to Ouma as well, is about contradiction. Everything Komaeda does and believes in is an internal contradiction, a broken belief. He's arrogant, yet he thinks very little of himself. He fights for hope, but also despair. He believes in hope that beats the odds, but he thinks the world operates on strict rules that can never be broken, and that small dogs can never become large dogs. He only loves the symbols of hope for the amount of hope they can offer and thus project onto observers, not valuing individuality and instead using symbols as sacrifices to generate hope for others, and yet, he also doesn't value the majority or the masses because he fucking hates the masses and normal, everyday people. I think Komaeda is a bit unlikable in-game because he's kind of annoying in chapters 2 and 3 when he keeps grinding the same points about hope, and he's just a generally evil actor who does a lot of bad things.
Some of his actions could theoretically be argued to work for the greater good, like I said, which again, speaks to the funny contradiction of how much he doesn't care about the masses or any greater good. Like, when he tries to kill the whole class, well, they are literal terrorists. They're extremely dangerous, and it's also not unlikely that Komaeda assumed the hope restoration project would fail, and they'd revert to being ultimate despairs. He already saw it with Mikan, which had a big impact on Komaeda, and Monokuma is running the show. He probably reasonably figured that it was safer for the wellbeing of the world and millions of people who might be killed by these terrorists, for him to just kill them.
Most of the game he's just, like, a difficult weirdo, I think he's more offputting than strictly unlikable, which makes some of his more prominent moments of likability and charm stand out. My favorite Komaeda moment in the game is when he physically can't wrap his head around Mikan's motivations, and Mikan chides him in a way that successfully breaks his confidence in everything he's been saying to her. Inbetween raving the same lines about hope over and over, he has these bits of strong fascination.
Beyond that, his likability is mainly from retroactively studying his sympathetic qualities after you finish the game, his deeply complex character study, and his meta presence. He's barely even responsible for the person he is, he holds a power that can change the course of the world and the stars. It was certainly too much for him to handle. Every bad thing that ever happened to him came from his talent, his life was set to be a rollercoaster from the start, not to mention his literal mental illnesses. As for his complexity, not only is he fascinating to study as a dramatic character, as a fantasy character with a highly unique magic system, and as a clearly dangerous entity that the rules forbid anyone from killing for the safety of the group, but he has another aspect people don't often talk about. It's not just that he has a really unique, interesting value system that no one can relate to, it's that he has an insane unique value system, AND unique emotional turmoil. It's not like he's a purely logical, cold, calculating person just striving for the weird things he consciously believes in. His actions are also heavily influenced by his own emotional shortcomings too. His relationship with his sense of ego, his hero complex, his fantasy of being someone important, his malice and hatred of so many things in the world, they all twist his motivations pursuing his values. Did he try to kill everyone because he just really believed that it was the best way to protect hope, or were his motivations also twisted by his own sense of grandeur and the desire to make a big play that will change the world and make him be remembered? By his hatred of despair and weakness blinding his judgement? By his sense of betrayal at people he considered his friends, and his own beliefs propping them up in his mind because he believed that talent was equivalent to hope, and his difficulty in reckoning with the fact that talent could generate so much unbalanced despair?
As for his meta presence it's not even close. Komaeda is DR2, biscuits and gravy, one cannot exist without the other. He is the key element in every sense: the themes, the meta, the deconstruction, the exploration of new creative ideas, the drama, the threat, everything comes back to Komaeda. He's the perfect ingredient to play off of everything else to make it really sing, to put a different spin on it. His values and talent are fascinating from a meta angle, as Komaeda is the most disconnected from diagetic reality and the most likely to be acting purely out of metaphysical reasons, which is pretty much confirmed by the game's text itself with how much Komaeda compares his values to sports, entertainment, and fiction, it's just telling us that he views reality like it's entertainment, to be made more exciting and satisfying, rather than to be made more moral. Komaeda doesn't even really understand the things that normal people value, like life, love, happiness, etc, as we can see with his complete inability to understand Mikan's sense of love and devotion. He can only see physical goals that people can have hope to achieve. He's also very meme-able, which is fun.
You mentioned that it would've been more fun for the antagonist to be someone you could enjoy thwarting or seeing fail, which Ouma serves much better as you've said in other videos. I've observed this in DR as a whole, and I think it's a deliberate choice. When comparing the trials and mysteries to games like Your Turn To Die and Ace Attorney, DR has the least satisfying climaxes by far, because rather than defeat a big bad and ramp up the the tension, the end of every trial is just this sad, miserable affair as the culprit makes a few last-ditch pathetic attempts to stay alive, and it's not even possible for them to get away with it anymore, it's just the limp sorry attempt for them to try to hang on to life in the end when they've clearly been found out. I'm gonna talk about this in my Miu video, but this is probably because DR doesn't think any of these people deserved the fate they got. None of them deserve to die, to be where they are, it's all unfair. So, when Komaeda's final plan fails, it's just sad because we pity the person he is and everything that made him who he is outside of his control, and what his life ultimately amounted to in the end.

But yeah, expectations and fandom play a huge role in your actual enjoyment of anything. It's one of the main reasons I realized many years ago that trying to judge art objectively was a complete waste of time. 90% of how much you love or hate something in your heart and subconscious is based on factors the writers can't control; your expectations, perceptions, state of mind, etc. It's easier to just accept that you can't control your own feelings 100% with facts and reasoning, and just accept that sometimes you feel things just because of the chaotic realities of life and every possible influence. I think people only gravitate to the small handful of characters partly because it's just a fandom thing. The DR awards on Twitter have brought every fan of every random character out of the woodwork. I saw Monosuke fanart for fucks sake. They're there, just hard to find, I guess. I think because the internet is so opinion-focused, like, you gotta have an opinion on the thing people have opinions on, it just gravitates to the biggest topics, rather than just being a platform for people to talk openly about the whole thing. I guess if you want to have discussions about things that aren't front and center all the time, you have to start the conversation yourself.
I think Komaeda's sex appeal comes from his take-charge moments, or his condescending attitude. It's kinda like how people think Saul Goodman is hot when he's taking charge and making a big masculine play. He's mostly seen as a twink but he has a dommy side. Also, I'm not a shipper, but I do think that pairing Komaeda with Hajime in a straightforward way really just fails to capture their actual dynamic and the interesting qualities shared between them. Hajime can relate to Komaeda because he's also someone who doesn't believe in himself, yet wants to present himself a certain way and dreams of being someone cool and important and confident. They're both people who are more willing to look at harsh truths, both pessimistic but in a way that is more willing to acknowledge when blind hope won't be enough. Komaeda's visible contradictions forces Hajime to reflect on himself and his own unhealthy mindset, and because Hajime can sympathize with Komaeda better than the ultimates can, he's the most willing to try to lend an olive branch to a clearly tragic, damaged person. He finds the mystery of Komaeda compelling, and believes that it's important to try to understand him, in the same way he pushes for seeking the truth in the trials more than everyone else, despite how much he hates doing it.
Hajime definitely does NOT like Komaeda. Komaeda's feelings are conflicted due to his broken beliefs, even in chapter 4 right before the trial starts, he expresses that he's torn between his hatred of Hajime's normalcy, and his lingering feelings of connection to Hajime. He feels like he should hate Hajime, but he doesn't 100%. Komaeda just never really reflects on himself, he never thinks that he's the problem in any situation. Because of that, it's probably best for Komaeda to stop focusing on studying the hopes of everyone else for a minute, and spend some time catching up with himself. Insert meta commentary about people with issues who just constantly consume media to look at fictional characters' issues for comfort rather than solving their own issues. He has no relationship with anyone else because he just doesn't connect with people, often by choice. He chooses to only manipulate people, to preach at them or insult them or glorify them. He chooses not to become closer to the people he idolizes from a distance. But yeah, shipping often feels surface level and substance-less to me, and this is a prime example.

    • @phosphorescenceking6114
      @phosphorescenceking6114 ปีที่แล้ว +26

Oh, also, wanted to mention this. There's a really funny and also telling scene at the start of chapter 3, handwaved as a joke. But, obviously, with DR, jokes are just a prelude to the game's plot or meta developments. Hiyoko makes her cow skull shrine to Mahiru, and everyone thinks it's an insult but really, it's just clumsy and coloured by Hiyoko's personality, but it's a genuine, heartfelt attempt to thank Mahiru and honor her memory. They get her to calm down, but then Gundham and Komaeda walk in and start it all over again by saying it's horrible and they need to burn it and Hiyoko starts crying again. Played as a gag, but Komaeda says "this is clearly a hopeless object, we need to destroy it". This is hilarious, but it also says a lot. It's funny to see such a confident and philosophically waxing character use their beliefs to argue for something silly, but it also says a lot that Komaeda immediately, with 100% confidence, believes this to be a hopeless object. It suggests a level of fault of his judgement, and/or his inability to respect life and death. He doesn't see the objective, so he can't understand it, just like with Mikan. He doesn't get why Mikan would do something out of love for a dead person, and the same applies here at the beginning of the chapter. He can't equate something that doesn't have a physical goal with "hope". A shrine to a lost loved one? Where is the journey, the strong opponent to overcome, the incredible feats of courage and skill? Where is the "hope"? It also speaks to his arrogance and overconfidence. He glances at something and assumed he understands it and can ascribe value to it.

Does nagito have an illness that has apathy as one of its symptoms? It’s also not his fault he feels this was especially because of how his luck work. If he has been shown multiple times that there is always something good that happens after something bad happens, I feel the most normal human thing to do would be to exploit it ( hence him trying to start the killings first). I feel as tho nagito is a very well thought out character and that’s why he is my favorite ( haven’t played v3 yet)

I found this very funny because your experience with Nagito and Kokichi was basically my experience but swapped because I had literally no expectations for Nagito and way too many for Kokichi. Don’t get me wrong, I still like Kokichi a lot, especially when he flew off the handle in trial 4, but after hearing so many things about him before getting into V3, my expectations for him were so impossibly high that even though his character was done perfectly well, it just didn’t hit me as much as it did for Nagito. I think I just really like crazy characters, since it’s kind of like a car crash you can’t look away from. They fall into a very iconic category of people in a death game because you can instantly recognize them as THAT kind of character, so I find it very fun to observe their antics, despite how obnoxious and unlikeable they would be in real life.

First of all, I wish you a safe travell~
I'm a fan of your videos and even though Komaeda is my favourite character in the game, I wanted to watch your video because it's always interesting to see different points of view.
And well, indeed, there were many things I don't agree with, but I'll try to be short. I really think Komaeda absolutely respects Twogami's sacrifice. Yes, Komaeda might have sounded quite insensitive when he talk about Twogami, but as you rightly say: it's because of his life, death for him is so common, but it still hurts him just that he hides it very well. Moreover, Komaeda even honours Twogami, Komaeda says "Thanks to him, I feel a little more will to live" and he lives up to his words, he really is very loyal. That's why he also helped in the trials because he couldn't afford to die when Twogami gave his life for him. Komaeda is really very empathetic and it's only because of him that Fuyuhiko was pushed to be honest with Peko.
And in fact, the OVA is proof that Komaeda can really get along with the rest of the cast. Especially with Fuyuhiko, and even Ibuki personally invited him to her concert when she could have ignored him perfectly well. Even Sonia mentions in chapter 5 that she likes Komaeda and did not like the attitude he was showing. Chiaki is one of the least worried about him, even dr3 showed it when she didn't dare to look for him, although she didn't even look for Hajime either, when he was missing. And Nagito is no hypocrite, in the end (and also in AE) he ends up believing in people without talent. Even in the OVA, he confesses to Hajime that he knew hajime would make it.
Besides, Komaeda did give them all a chance, or did you forget that he left them the video along with the password? Anyway, there are many aspects of Komaeda that you overlooked and I'm not surprised since you don't like the character, but if you look at them you might realise that you can see him in a better light.
    See ya~

I had actually forgotten about the whole incident with him leaving behind the password, so that's why I didn't mention it. It's been a while since I've played through SDR2 and I've not been able to finish the OVA yet, so some things def slipped through the cracks. I like your take on his reaction to Twogami's death; it's an angle I hadn't considered before and didn't quite grasp when I was reviewing footage. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and for being respectful while doing so!

me personally, i like nagiito a lot but its probably more what he could be than what he is. I really like komahina, partially bc its (kinda) canon in terms of crushes, but also bc i love angst and an ending where they make each other better and more functional would make me unreasonably happy. i dont know why ppl thtink hes hot either, its probs his off thte deep end scenes ala russian roulette and fire. in terms of character, i think i really like that its so clear his trauma is what made his worldview and what made it so concrete in his head, to the point that he can't comprehend things outside of it. (this opinion was stolen from the nezumiva video essay). i really want hajime to be able to connect with him on some deeper level, and help him readjust. idk man ship stuff. also i agree it feels bad when hes mean to hajime, but when we look at his worldview we can see that he thinks hes been lied to and betrayed, and that "someone like him was pretending to be important". Also i think his actions in chapter 5 are completely justified. He finds out everyone there is a serial killer (functionally) and evil except for the traitor, and so he concocts a plan to take them all out, and let the traitor live. bc as far as hes aware, the traitor is a good person (bc he has no clue abt the computer simulation part), so i think his decision is actually one of his more rational ones, and shows off that he isnt stupid or stone cold crazy, but quite initelligent. but tbf I also enjoy byakuya and ship him with makoto, so if that disqualifies my opinion then that makes sense haha :D

I think that's a pretty valid interpretation of Nagito's actions/his relationship with Hajime! He's definitely one of the smartest characters tbh even if he sometimes takes his plans a little too far.

As a Komaeda enjoyer i really liked this video! It's always fun to hear different opinions about characters I like. I always felt that he was a very love him or hate him character which I felt was understandable considering the role he plays in the story. I think the reason why I liked him so much during my playthrough was because of how messed up he is. His actions were so extreme that i just needed to understand this guys brain goop. like, why are you this way? which led me to do his freetime events which helped me understand him a bit better. I felt the same about Kokichi though i haven't beaten that game yet so i sadly had to skip that part of the video. Also, totally agree with komahina! I think you made a very good point when you mentioned how often they shove it into your face he is actively trying to ruin the trials for hope to shine.
It wouldve been a lot better if they left little tidbits.
    A quick example:
Trial 1. He brings several things to the murder scene so that it becomes confusing what was actually used by the murderer (Noone figures out who did it).
Trial 2. He accuses the wrong person of being the murderer, then acts nonchalant about it. You might note it as odd, but then again other characters have made some pretty stupid claims so whatever.
Trial 3: He hides the murder weapon and frames someone else for it (Noone figures out who did it)
Trial 4. He makes up a complete lie noone believes him, but for the sake of the trial you have to proof him wrong
Trial 5. Your character figured he must be the one messing with the trials, confront him. His original trial plays out
Note that I completely removed the part where he goes insane and has to be chained up. For me that entire part made him so annoying.
I think they couldve done a better job with him, stop reminding us that he wants hope to shine through, save that for the end, leaves us guessing why someone would want to mess with the trials and who it might be.

Huh, I hadn't thought of that before! That would've been really interest to see play out -- kinda like that whole traitor situation in THH. But yeah sometimes it felt like it was layered on a little too thick, but I think it was a valid writing choice. Just not for everybody.

For me, Nagito became my favorite character through learning his backstory via FTE's, being the twisted perversion of the Super Highschool Level Hope avatar and just being an all around fun and enjoyable twist antagonist. He's the complete inverse but at the same time reflection of Junko, a malicious living ball of demented energy but at the same time wants to see his fellow SHSL's succeed even if it means losing his life in the process and I love that manic energy put in to the body of this wavy haired twink. Though I don't personally agree with the stan culture behind him, the lusty fanart or the kining, he is and always will be my favorite character.

He's definitely a character I enjoy, but I probably would be a lot more attached to him if he ever showcased some sort of doubt or regret over his actions, even if it's just to reach the conclusion of "Nope! I was right, hope FTW." As such his ideals are so unwavering and his planning so ahead of everyone else that it's easier to regard him as some sort of force of nature, more of a plot device than a character, not unlike Izuru Kamukura.
It's especially hard to reckon with if you subscribe to the anime canon of
    *Spoilers*
him waking up into the real world, seemingly unchanged and having learned nothing.

Sonia and Ibuki are two of my other favorites and while I am die hard Komahina, the best fanfics are ones that explore relationships outside of the pairing. I love seeing Sonia, Ibuki and Komaru being bffs with Komaeda. They are just the kind of people that are more forgiving and willing to hear him out and also try to understand him.

for me, nagito was made to be hate, like a really contrast to makoto, in all ways, but people missundestood the purpose, the fandom is one of the worst part of It (and maybe, the worst part of all danganronpa) people treating him like a "cute gay boi" and pretending that he never made something wrong really pisses me off, *he is a fucking criminal! not a cuttie boy!!!*

haven't seen anyone else say this in the comments, so here's a thought of mine... (take it with a grain of salt as i haven't actually played any danganronpa games, although i have watched countless videos on it so i *believe* i know basically everything that's substantial)
why does nobody try to philosophically engage with nagito? all they do is say "wow that's scary," or "oh no that's bad" but they never try to truly understand him - treating him as completely insane and out of his mind. which is natural - most people would have that kind of response to someone behaving unhinged, but i don't think anyone ever truly makes an effort to discuss anything with him. if they did, maybe he would be a better person for it, and his lack of friends probably helps drive him to make really outlandish claims.

Oh boi, inviting me to discuss Komaeda freely? A dream. This... may be slightly disjointed as I finished DR2 only two months ago and didn't watch the anime or the OVA or play Ultra Despair Girls yet, but I figured I should toss in my two cents anyway.
I will start off by saying Nagito is my favourite, across all games, there's no dethroning him, there are some characters where I enjoy a particular aspect of them more, I relate to Toko's social struggle and her passion of writing out her fantasies for example, or find interest in how they're portrayed, like how Hiyoko's bullying is deeprooted in trauma and abuse from her family and isn't just 'small gremlin being mean for the hahas', but Nagito remains my general favourite. He's just such a good premise and execution of a character I can't help but like him, even if I understand he's absolutely nuts, I might be slightly biased.
I went into DR2 completely blind, he was just a name to me because a friend pushed me to play DR after Ace Attorney and thought I would like him (and he was right, but I knew nothing about him at the time), so I had no expectations going in beyond 'hm, would really like to do some more of this brand of investigation', so that might have played a part in how I view him.
The similarities with Makoto kind of flew over my head the first time you meet him, so I didn't see him as a deconstruction of him, but simply as an example of how exaggerating things is always a bad thing, no matter how good the initial concept. Believing in hope and being self deprecating aren't truly bad traits on paper, but Nagito twists them so much they become dangerous to others and to his own psyche. He doesn't just feel inferior, he genuinely believes he is lesser than his talented classmates and should lay down his life for their hope to shine brighter. He is basically built on the philosophy of 'misery builds character' and follows it in the killing game too. He wants to start it off to let the others face adversity and strengthen their hopes, he wants to see that absolute hope that can overcome anything develop in front of his eyes, and the only way to get it according to him, is by putting his classmates through trials and tribulations, he thinks he's doing them a favor by orchestrating the first. This is just my own opinion, but since he views himself as so worthless but he still lived through all the shit happened to him, the plane hijack, the meteorite impact, the kidnapping and the terminal illnesses, that shaped him into what he is, he is probably convinced that the truly talented, the symbols of hope, should follow a similar journey to reach their own peak.
So for that goal, he will play any role he deems appropriate, the antagonist, the support, the detective or even the fool who needs to have things explained to him. He's always a step ahead in investigations, but he never really takes outright control of a trial until chapter 4, where he finds out about them all being basically terrorists and he loses it. He knows that no matter what he says, he will always be regarded with suspicion and he truly doesn't mind it, so he drops hints for the others to figure it out themselves and helps in his own way, even if he's playing both sides to see which hope will be stronger. In chapter 3 he basically plays 4d chess since he actually has a reason to hunt down the murderer this time, and it's one of my favourite chapters because of how he subtly steers it where he wants to. He shoots down any arguments the killer might make when cornered without anybody taking note of how he seems to bring random points that suddenly make sense: he realizes the trial will hinge on Hajime's testimony at the very start, so he proves without a shadow of a doubt that it couldn't be him right away, providing airtight alibi via his own testimony and the theater ticket, he also proves that Ibuki definitely didn't commit suicide, steering the conversation back to it by playing the part of the dim-witted fool. Since the murderer right now is 'despair' to him, he's being more proactive in helping you since you are the side of hope.
In chapter 4 we start to see hints of how rude he is to those he considers even below him, even if he admits before the trial he still cares about Hajime in some way, shape or form despite that, but chapter 5 is where he completely loses it. He orchestrates his own death in such a way that it's impossible to solve to take everyone else down with him and spare the one person that is truly innocent among them, because as much as he talks about hope, he has no hope for himself, and since despair is absolute evil, he, as a remnant of despair, as well as all the others, need to be wiped out. There are multiple explanations on why he went so hard with the setup of his death, but I think there are three main reasons to it and that I believe in. The first being the need to make it look like a murder, to throw people off, and that's the most straightforward. The second is that he can control his luck to some degree, he had no idea who would take up the fire grenade that killed him, so by fulfilling the 'bad luck' part of his cycle, meaning mutilating his legs and arm and impaling his hand, he believed that the 'good luck' that comes right after would make his plan go off without a hitch. The third, which is kind of a stretch, but I still like it, is that he was punishing himself for being part of the remnants. Despair for the sake of it is unaccaptable, and he is already suicidal as is, in his Dangan Island ending he confesses he even wanted to die just to be free of his luck cycle, the fact that he and his talented classmates were part of that despair is the tipping point.
But even if he did all that, he didn't know who would come out alive, he gave them all the tiniest chance to prove him wrong, he gave whoever would survive the password to the ruins, if he thought there was no chance the others could be redeemed then he wouldn't have left them anything at all, why would he need to give the password to the traitor after all? So even if he didn't believe it was possible, he still left them something in the off chance they pulled off a miracle, effectively going against his expectations of them.
As for the shipping, I am Hinanami trash so Nagito and Hajime are just bros to me, I can tolerate the HInata/Chiaki/Nagito threesome when they're being cute bitches, and Chiaki/Nagito is cool enough that I go on a flight of fancy on it once in a while, but there really ain't much more to his relationships. I know he can get along with the rest of the class just fine if he tries because of his friendship in the OVA with Kazuichi and Fuyuhiko, which I am aware of it being a simulation, but the possibility is there, but the rest isn't explored much and I really wish it was, if only to give us fanfiction fuel beyond Hajime and maybe Chiaki if we're lucky.
~~Komaeda is hot in the pale, skinny white boy that is a little silly and quirky way, and by quirky I mean murderous, yes it's very embarrasing admitting to liking such a twink~~

I think its important to keep in mind that Nagito wants hope to conquer. Keeping his philosophy in mind is crucial when finding the appeal of his character.
So even if he works with someone else, if Hajime and the others can't find the blackened, in Nagito's eyes, they wouldn't be the hope he was looking for.
Similar to you i went into DR2 with expectations towards Nagito. My experience with him was that i was surprised about the chapter1 reveal, and until chapter 4 my opinion of him didn't really change much. I found he was interesting due to his opposing ideology and the fact he was a twist on Naegi.
You mentioned that you could see some people sympathising with Nagito due to him being an outcast.
I think Kodaka never wanted us, the audience, to sympathise with his actions or him really as a character, rather than just understanding them and keeping them in mind when Nagito was up to something again.
Nothing really excuses what Nagito did, but like with every great villain/antagonist you get a glimpse into the darker aspects that the story wants to tackle.
Nagito isn't morally just, he just has warped view on hope thats deeply embedded into him and the story runs with it.
I think it's important to keep this philosophy in mind, not really questioning the morality behind it.
It made sense he would fuck around in trials because he wants the other students, that he admires so much, to conquer hope themselves.
It made sense he would despise Hajime after he found out that he was a reserve course student because he doesn't have an innate talent.
He never wanted to work with the students "together" because he saw himself as not worthy while also wanting them (the other students) to confirm the expectations he sat onto them - that they are Ultimates that could "be" hope.
There was never really a chance to build a normal friendship on equal footing because he never saw the other students as other people, rather he saw them for their talents/achievements. That's at least what i felt like. Nagito has always been detached from the others like this.
It's funny that you mention Kokichi, because i feel the complete opposite towards him.
For you it was "presentation" and for me was the the "goal" each of these characters have.
While Kokichi "wants" to end the killing game, Nagito just wants the other students to overcome the upcoming despair to become hope.
Kokichi fights for the same goal as his fellow classmates yet doesn't actually do anything, even actively sabotaging any chance to work together.
Nagito does what he wants for a twisted sense of hope that he has internalised. If he fucks up, he drags other students down, but he doesn't care for them as equals, rather than people who can attain greatness when overcoming larger obstacles.
While if Kokichi fucks up, he drags everyone down, which is what he supposedly wants to avoid. I had no idea which direction V3 wanted to go with Kokichi, not due to him being an actually well-rounded character, but rather Kodaka trying to mix his ideas of Truth vs Lie into the story and hoping that something will come out of it.
Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that for me, nothing really felt out of character with Nagito.
By the time we got into chapter 5 I got hooked on how far he was willing to go and by chapter 6, which recontextualizes Nagitos actions in chapter 5,
    Nagito actually surpassed my expectations.
Nagito is basically the only character with character development in DR2 (besides Hajime).
After the remnant reveal, my opinion on every other character in DR2 plummeted while Nagito rose up exponentially.
He wants to eliminate the remnants, including him, thereby "rescuing" the traitor made such a good twist!
Though, if Hajime and gang could overcome that despair that not only Nagito set up for them with chapter 5, but also the reveal itself in chapter 6, then he would've served his role as the stepladder to hope.
    This is my interpretation though.
He is the only character that could've been affected that way due to that reveal. The students he put on such a high pedestal, the students he projected so much positivity onto were nothing but scum to him. And so was the.
    Small theory:
The fact that he stabbed himself so much during his case. Of course it may have been to made it look like he was tortured. But i think there was a slither of self hatred in him that he was once a remnant and this was his way of punishing himself.
This may be reaching or confirmation bias, but i always saw it as a valid theory that Nagito's luck could reach that far to make the ending possible. Out of all 3 games i think DR2 has the most positive ending (if everyone survived and turned normal again).
Nagito served his purpose better than any other character as an antagonistic force and thematic foil while also having an interesting philosophy and fun personality.
    I love him.

So I've come back to the fandom after having abandoned it a few years ago and I got back into Nagito. I really love your POV because I'm honestly confused to why I like this cloud-head so much. I also love Kokichi so I thought I just like the crazy ones, but I think I like him so much because he's... weirdly relatable? Bear with me.
Hes the one that no one in class likes, even back before becoming despair. He's had the worst hand of cards dealt to him (lost his parents, dying, etc.) Yet he's trying to find ways to see the bright side (aka the hope side) even if he has an unhealthy obsession over doing it. Would I be able to stand being in the same room as him? Probably not. But I want him to be happy. The same that I want Kokichi to be happy.
I just want this sad terminally ill twink to be happy and loved. Also I've got a horrible obsession over silver hair, so... Oops. And komahina I think is loved because it's the closest we are ever getting to a canonical gay pairing in danganronpa, and I especially love aus where the Kamakura side of Hinata can help treat Nagito of his illnesses, both physical and mental, leading to that: I just want my boy happy.
Also he literally sacrificed himself to try his best to save the world from a return of the despair, he hated himself and what they were that much that he *tortured* himself. He had so much anger and pain in that frail little body that he took it out the only way he saw how.

Good gosh, they’re almost all so incredibly cruel in DR2 and DRV3. They’re a little bit more realistic in DR1, even with the fantastical elements like ‘butter,’ but dying from being pummelled, from too many Gs centripetal force, from burning to death, and crushing to death are all ways that people really do die. Awful for sure, but at least they’re not really cruelly outlandish ways to die, like being tarred, feathered, carried upside-down below a helicopter by the legs and then deep-fried.
I’m with the other guy, Kyoko got off easy. Her execution wasn’t even especially relevant to her because it had to be interchangeable on the games’ small budget.

i am a Nagito simp because i have fucking daddy issues. I can explain. The basics of their personalities is the same Nagito has a lot of things what my father don't has and i craved more than anything, and he don't has a lot of things what my father gave me so i don't crave. The fact that while i crave his attention and want to get his love i am still afraid of my father and that just adds even more to my attraction because like that i can built some kind of 'connection' with my father while feeling safe because he is a fictional character. I don't wanna talk about it more because i don't wanna go too personal...but i just felt like writing it down so we can see someone who is honest about why they love him. I hope that this comment can help you get why some people like him. (i'm sure there is a lot of people with the same reasons) Thanks for reading my comment and stay safe.

It's okay. I am an asexual and I have no idea why some people find certain people attractive, but I've learned to accept it.
Like, all my life I've been told that muscular men are attractive and that you become less attractive as you age, but now I am on the internet, watching people thirst over twinks and pilfs and it confused me at first. But like... I don't think I will ever understand it. I don't think I have to. Different people have different tastes in other people and that's okay. I am too old for Nagito anyway, but I at least find him cute.
...um. To be perfectly honest, I find it kind of sweet that people are more into this mentally ill, skinny guy with messed up hair than into more traditional "hunky" types like Mondo, Nekomaru or Gonta. I don't think that means you have bad taste (as long as you like, don't fetishize mental illness or claim that being skinny is the only way to be attractive).
    That's just my opinion, though.
Nagito and Chiaki are both my favorite characters, which is funny, considering what happens later in SDR2 and I like them for basically opposite reasons. I like Nagito because he is so weird, messed up and complicated while I like Chiaki just because she's super nice, helpful and chill - not much else to her, just a really sweet girl who really did nothing wrong, unlike Nagito, who did wrong things but is (imo) likable in his own weird twisted way.

Nagito is one of those characters I learned to like and appreciate _after_ finishing DR2, because I found him super annoying during gameplay. Like every time he started talking about hope and despair or whatever, I just wanted him to shut his trap 😭. I was especially angry at him when he pulled that stunt in chapter 5.
I think I only started to feel bad for him after viewing his FTEs (I didn't like him enough to do them during the game) and even then I couldn't bring myself to ship Nagito with anyone (especially not Hajime) until he had like, 10 years of therapy or something.
Now that I think about it, I think I only started liking Nagito after looking at memes and reading fanfics including him lmao.

Wow, everything you posted before this I really liked, thought was well constructured and had good opinions but this was a really hot take, I could not agree on any of the points mentioned at all but i only plan on talking about the "shipping" side of things in detail since that's what I care about the most, but I'll glance over something before I get to that.
    Kokichi vs nagito💪
I disagree with kokichi being better than nagito heavily but didnt really understand any of the points you mentioned in the video besides you personally just liking how he acted better, but if you wanna know why me and many others think kokichi is badly written i reccomend watching
this TH-camr named aeris akamatsu that made two 30 minute videos explaining the bad writing of kokichi and the lack of structure his charcter has.
    Shipping💔
With that out of the way I wanna talk about komahina, its personally my favorite ship ever in all of media and it's sad how most of the fans of it portray the charcters terribly and dont mention everything that's so great and complex about it, so I get why you think it's just a toxic little protag x antag yaoi ship because that's how all the other fans see it as well so I'll explain what I think makes it so perfect, but just so you know I only am going to be explaining why i think they would change each others harmful views on the world to develop and become healthier people insted of the little hints of it being in canon text, which means I ship this in a way that's post canon and not toxic.
    Why it's good for hajime💪
Both nagito and hajimes toxic mindsets about talents perfectly are opposites of eachother. Hajimes being "I want a talent cause that's what makes people special/important in life" and nagitos being "my talent is useless and took everything away from me" (like his parents, dog, etc.) I think the way that they care so much about talents brings them to a better understanding than chiaki could ever comprehend, which shown in the anime when she says to hajime "you dont need a talent" hajime didnt listen to her at all and that's because she doenst understand how important talent is to him, she kinda just brushed it off but even if she did really care I dont think she would ever be able to change hajimes mind about it because shes never had to worry about talent before. Which kinda sucks since that hajimes biggest issue and I dont think she would ever be able to fix it.
I feel like in a post canon universe where they argue about this would actually break down hajimes toxic mind set about needing a talent, seeing someone suffer from it, seeing someone get all the special things ripped away from them in life. I feel that would change him insted of chiaki just saying "having talent isnt the goal🤓" and that's why I personally think hajime being with nagito would be super good for him, even though it would need a lot of development if he got to see what talent really is he would recognize that he doesn't need it, and he wouldnt be able to realize that with any other charcter.
Also just the fact that in chapter one he seemed to warm up to nagito super fast, but that's smaller things
Why it's good for nagito 💪
Him liking hajime in the game would break his ideology in general, he always thought others had to have talents and ones that didnt needed to become stepping stones for them including himself. Him liking hajime and then him finding out that the person he likes is a reserve course and a ultimate despair student probably shattered him in his mind, but even after that there's a line before trial 4 in the game where nagito says to hajime "but why do I still like you, because you like hope, I love hope" this is kinda theoretical here but he might've just been using the hope thing as a excuse to cover up him just enjoying hajime in general, in nagitos mind if it's for hope then its okay. Hajime never mentioned "enjoying hope" anywhere.
This gets more to post game stuff but I think if nagito realised that he didnt like hajime for this "hope" since he doesnt have a talent and liked him for the reserve course student he is, it would completely mess with his mind that he likes a talentless person and would maybe think about how talent isnt everything. Which if he ever dated any other person in the class he wouldn't ever relise he liked that person for who they were and not just "there hopeful talent".
(Why I hate mfs that ship nagito with girls)
No where in the text is it ever shown that nagito likes a girl, literally ever. The fanservice scene with mikan where he fell in her skirt he didnt blush at all and said it was bad luck, he never showed intrest to chiaki or sonia even though there nice to him, and even in this maginzie thing I saw where they were interviewing the charcters in charcter when they asked nagito "what type of girl he liked" he said " I like when they face forward to the future" which the way he said "they" instead of "she" is pretty uhh gay, and also hajimes whole thing at the end of danagnronpa was "facing the future" so it's just implying komahina even more
Hope you read this and understand my point of view sorry if there spelling mistakes its 5am right now

Hello! And it's completely okay if you disagree with everything I said in this video. This wasn't meant to be super structured or "analytical", and was more so opinion/feeling based. And feelings are complicated, lol. But I did read through your comment and have sat on it for a little while!
Your logic behind why you like Komahina (along with a few others' in the comments) does make a lot of sense and it's really the only way that I see the appeal in it. I don't like to throw the word "yaoi ship" around lightly, but... there are instances where it does come across that way and I find that to be more bland than the scenario that you outlined up there ^^
And yeah, I don't... fully get people who ship Nagito with a woman either. I'll joke about him dating Chiaki because she's nice to him, but I don't think he's interested in women either. Even with Komahinami as a throuple, I don't see him having any romantic attachment to Chiaki. So hey, I agree with you here.
However, I do want to emphasize that I didn't try to imply Kokichi was a better antagonist than Nagito. Like I said upfront, I do think Nagito is the best written out of the three and there are a lot of ways where he outclasses Kokichi. I have seen plenty of critiques of Kokichi (including Aeris') and I do completely understand why people think he's a poorly written character. Some parts I agree with, others I don't. The points I was outlining were trying to explain why he left a better impression to me personally, so I apologize if it didn't come across more clearly than that.
Anyways, thank you for leaving your comment (although I do hope you have gotten some sleep)! I understand where you're coming from, and I hope you can understand where I am too. :)

Hi there TinyLeaf! I was really surprised by the video because it was refreshing to see someone discuss unpopular opinions so pleasantly.
Have you seen the Scrum Debates on the r/danganronpa reddit? They're really fantastic, particularly Scrum Debate #3 where users debate over Kokichi and Nagito's characters (civilly that is!). Nagito ended up winning the poll but there are two really in-depth write-ups for Kokichi in the post on the results, particularly "My Case for Kokichi" by u/greymousie and "All Hail Oma" by u/rainbowkes (biased, I know). The first one has helped me reevaluate Kokichi's entire character but the second one does a REALLY good job at comparing the two characters and summarizing some of Nagito's flaws. Not only that, they argue vehemently for Kokichi but both users really like Nagito as well, so they give very balanced insights on the comparison. The second one goes as far as to say that Nagito is the better "villain" while Kokichi is the better "character". They're long, but worth the read if you're interested in some other hot takes.
I have a somewhat similar stance on Nagito as yours but with different reasons. I was certainly intrigued by Nagito during my playthrough, but my interest in his character wasn't very long-term and didn't really hold up outside the second game. I liked him, but while I understand why people do, I can't afford to adore him like other people can.
Nagito really interested me during my playthrough. I was really excited to see Nagito becoming the trial troll that he promised in trial 1 since he left open the possibility of teaming up with the killer in future trials. I thought he'd be like Kyoko #2 giving advice during the trials but you'd never know if you could really trust his words because he could always be advocating for the killer. In the end it didn't really matter since he just helped the players in trials 2-4, in fact he was somewhat static in the times between the first trial and his death.
I also think that the devs didn't give his character a very good conclusion. We've spend the entire game building up this guy with unthinkable ideals, played one of the most mind-boggling, climactic (and imo, one of the best) trials revolving around his death, and he barely gets a footnote in the final trial. No meaningful confrontation with Makoto who'd been built up as his polar opposite (it's not something that had to happen but it would have been a good way to wrap up this narrative comparison), no note on his talent hierarchy ideals, and his backstory explained in the FTE's have no effect on the plot and explain very little about his mindset. I know that he gets screentime and some minimal interaction with Makoto in other works, but this game should be able to stand on its own without the help of spin-offs or the anime to help explain away things
Ultimately (pun intended), his character just boiled down to him being crazy. He's a boi crazy about hope. And what we learned about him in the fifth trial was just that he was more crazy that we thought, but he was still crazy about hope. Don't get me wrong, I was still really liked his character during my playthrough and I found him one of the most interesting parts of the second game if not the most interesting, but I quickly forgot about him after his trial. I think the premise of his character was unique and interesting with a to of potential and his buildup to the fifth trial beautifully done, but he suffered from bad execution with a lot of wasted potential.

    hello you just summoned me!
i only read the description and a few of the comments so i cant really have any arguments rn. i might watch your video later though. but i think i understand why you dislike him and that's okay, i just feel the whole nagito vs kokichi fight really stupid. ik im just placing my biased opinion however it's just so annoying to see people defend kokichi and just call nagito all crazy when in fact it's the other way around.
look as someone who's listened to nagito voice files THREE times, who has played, re played, watched the anime, seen all nagito scenes back and forth. didn't miss on any nagito easter egg, song, fte cds, deleted scenes and watched a better translation of the game from LETSPLAY archives I can tell you that Nagito is not only misunderstood but also not as bad as kokichi.
and i do understand the whole ''overrated'' thing with him, but it does make sense considering he's a well written character. and komahina is (im not joking) my first ever gay ship i've ever shipped in my entire life. it just feels right (the canon one not the fanon) even if they dont date i feel like nagito never explicitely said he wanted to have a romantic relationship with him, however it is hard to sustain this argument since ''aishiteru'' means a romantic way of declaring your feelings to someone. but i find komahina being a more sensical ship than saiouma. hajime and nagito are kinda one and the same in a way. both self deprecating people who wants to be more than that. and they both seem to have a nice relationship. saihara clearly dislikes ouma and he pretty much likes maki way more.
anyways, thats my opinion but i dont really see a reason some people says kokichi's actions were more valid than nagito's and calling kokichi's behaviour ''messing around'' like bro literally manipulated and killed 2 people. nagito didnt even manipulated anyone, he kinda off gave them a push (persuave) for them to be motivated to fight for their lives.

I agree on many, many points. I do think he is a good concept for what happens when you push luck and hope to the logical extreme, but he is not my favourite antagonist. That has to be Kokichi. I hate the guy's guts, but I always respect his consistency and integrity. Come on, the guy's first thought as he falls through the floor and starts bleeding is not to seek medical help but to _prank_ someone by *making them think he died as well.* He is doing EVERYTHING for his image and position and I respect it immensely.

  • @chlozentimes
    @chlozentimes ปีที่แล้ว +2

hey hi and hello, i've been obsessed with nagito for almost 2 years now and i'm here to rant (politely) I'm probably just gonna blend in with the rest of the comments but hey, it's not like I haven't wasted enough of my brain power to this funny guy from danganronpa already. Oh yeah and, I'm not the best with grammar when its not being pressured so there will probably be grammar mistakes because i'm just happily/casually ranting
without further ado here are my thoughts
First off, i'd love to share my story with Nagito Komaeda, this is mainly the personal unnecessary stuff so if you wanna skip this you can.
I've been mainly homeschooled my whole life, but because of my lack to keep up with grades (I am like 3-2 years behind this stuff is bad) I was going to be sent to an actual school, except the pandemic happened so it was online. during this time I would listen to music nonstop even doing work because I won't go into detail but this school was very bad at their job and i needed that so called copium.
I had watched gamegrumps play danganronpa 1 because I was too lazy to buy the game myself and did the same with danganronpa 2 except another youtuber. I wanted to see danganronpa 2 since danganronpa 1 made me kind of happy in a way, I never got attached to any of the characters till the end. Up until the end i was a makoto guy all the way and i still do like his character a lot.
Then danganronpa 2 happened I didn't expect to be attached to any characters, looking for some funny killing game rollercoaster of emotions for coping, it's like the vine, "hunny, you got a big storm comin'".
along with everything I just said the person I was watching never liked Nagito not even at the beginning, making me look at the good aspects of his character constantly to see if I agreed and I never did.
I had heard of him slightly, he was the only character I knew of existence so I had expectations.
Funnily enough I was more skeptical of him before his trial freak out, "Surely there has to be more to this character than this."
And when he did his freak out it just kind of made sense, I was surprised, but in a way that anxiety and being skeptical feeling instantly died down and then I just started liking him. Maybe it was just a combination of the facts, I obsess over things easily, I needed coping, I hadn't felt anxiety gotten rid of in forever, and the youtube I watched hated him making me analyze that, "yeah I like him even if he is crazy." I just Know that he made me feel basically any other emotion other than "depressing and burnt out from working so much," It was so bad I would be up from 8 am, to 1 am or later working. So he made me have an emotion I really REALLY needed at the time.
you can probably guess I cried my ass off at his death.
After I finished danganronpa 2 I saw someone analyze Nagito and since I liked him I watched, and it basically was just explaining his free time events, then I watched his free time events on its own.
Yeah I haven't left this obsession hole in almost 2 years.
Alright that's my personal experience, now for my general "explanations" for why I like him
i just kind of, do lol
I've tried to explain it for a long time, the whole time I've obsessed over him in fact, but I can't figure it out, I've found assumptions like maybe it's that he makes me think, but overall I honestly don't know.
and that itself has taught me that I don't need a reason to like what I do I just, can and that feeling doesn't need to be justified with an essay, but they are fun nonetheless.
And even if I can't pinpoint the source, I sure can say things I like about him.
I love how he talks, In Japanese and English, (the topic of how the different voices give such different vibes is a topic for another day,) I love how smart he is for no reason what so ever, His backstory is interesting and tragic, (honestly I have a soft spot for mentally ill characters and understanding how they got there,) his luck system, and there's a lot more but this is already long enough and I'm not even done.
Responses and opinions on your Video in Specific
yeah this is probably what I should of done first but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
7:19 helll yeah a real ones pass, Honestly so many Nagito fans I've talked to are all, "uwu look at my bagel hope boy" and I want to crush them into the dirt most times, I have barely anyone to talk to about my obsession and these, THESE, are the people I'm given??
    sobs
and probably controversial but I really don't get kinning never really have, respect it? just it confuses me and i don't want to get involved.
9:00 okay, you can gladly shoot me for this but I'm kind of the opposite, I really dislike kokichi, I kind of did like him when I first played but when chapter 5 hit it just really really rubbed me the wrong way. I was hoping to like him as much as Nagito but compared to Nagito (AGAIN THIS IS MY OPINION YOU ARE 100% VALID) I just find kokichi bland, he's funny at points I will absolutely give him that and boy do I love seeing him be a gremlin in chapter 4, but chapter 5 kind of gives it a, "here, we were too lazy to come up with a true backstory and reason so nehehe write the character for yourself!!" vibe to me.
He's a good and fun character, especially in trials, but chapter 5 rubbed me the wrong way so badly that I don't like him much, but, you would be mistaken if you don't think I didn't cry at his death.
13:51 Yeah, I completely completely agree on this so much so that I felt like I wanted to say it, I think it would of been nice to make it at least a tiny bit clear that, "Nagito is still one of the students," Which to me is kind of one of those awkward writing flaws that danganronpa just loves to have.
14:52 fading into a corner cause I just think chiaki is mid, teruteru makes me uncomfortable, and the ultimate imposter i never really had a strong opinion on
    ✌️
honestly probably just adds to my obsession cause I don't have too much to personally be salty about
15:15 AGREE, okay I Am a nagito fan and I (thank GOD) tend to like more popular characters, but I still wish the rest of the fandom wasn't left out, it's nice for me because I was lucky enough (heh) to have content, but I feel for others, and it somewhat impacts me too because I really like Aoi.
also holy shit the fact he's in the spinoff game makes me mad sometimes, it's like they said,
"hey guys we need fan service character"
"uhh, what if we uh put the white hair man in the game"
"Great job john a raise to you !!!"
"And what if we made him relevant to the plot in a good way??!!"
"John. Do you want your Raise Taken Away."
"okay so he barely impacts the plot and we use him as an excuse why there's a game to play in the first place"
    "YES!!!!"
16:37 OKAY so my "argument" for this is silly, but basically I agree with you, except I played the Dangan-Island mode (yes basically the dating sim🥲) Where the program goes as intended, and everything is happy, and it is SO nice to see my BOI Nagito be so happy and be able to learn that basically, Hope was inside him all along and he should move on from his toxic mind. And some of the interactions are just so so so cute here are some quotes,
"Hearing you say that is making me blush a little."
"When I'm with you, I can enjoy the silence.. At least, that's how I feel"
"...But I should stop talking about such dangerous things and go home to our love nest!"
"But I don't mind if you just want to see me naked."
if someone says komahina is actually canon I will put them into the ground, because it's clearly not it's a protagonist and antagonist and it's clearly hinted at that chiaki and hajime are "meant to be," BUT the Dangan-Island timeline is so cute that I accept Komahina in that kind of condition, It's so wholesome there and Komaeda grows and learns, and hajime, even though slightly skeptical, is happy and interested. It's just such a beautiful feeling seeing my favorite character, even in an alternative universe, get the treatment he deserves after so much fucking trauma like holy shit so much.
In this timeline Supposedly, since he's grown him being a reserve course shouldn't hit As hard, he may have a reaction but not enough to dismiss his entire existence as valid.
oh yeah, and the alternative universe holding hands with Nagito dialogue, "Nagito let go of my hand... this is a handshake" which is cute with Nagito struggling to understand interactions or not wanting to let go because [SHIPPING]
19:02 the ova is the best thing that came from the danganronpa 3 anime bless the nagito ova its so nice and wholesome just chill and watch him be casual to people, it isn't perfect but at least people aren't hating him and he isn't hating them not stuck in his hope and luck that he can't be approachable to them.
19:36 Honestly, I really like that, I gotta reconsider my ships on god, But you're absolutely right. It's possible Nagito and Hajime could be having a messy argument or something and chiaki would be able to even it out and make them both happy at the end of the day that's cute.
19:59 I feel like I just was casually watching, and then suddenly a hand is reaching through from my screen and pointing at me, yeah I'll admit it I think Nagito is attractive. I can't really explain it I just like him, his hair is fluffy looking, I don't really like guys with too much muscle that they're really big, and I can't really explain it, I'm just a silly bisexual who likes the funny white haired mentally unstable man.

6:35 i wanna point some things out about the last two points
    5. The ultimate despairs were terrible terrorists who destroyed the world, they're mass murderers who don't guve a shit. Why would he guve them a chance? Makoto was the only one who did, and guess what, they decided to fuck with the neo world program. Of course he wouldn't guve then a chance, especially after what he's seen of Mikan once she got her memories back
    6. He didn't bully Hajime for being reserve course, that was an excuse, he bullied him for being a despair and the MASTER MIND, Yes he talked about him being reserve course but that's just so he wouldn't raise suspicions. Have you seen how harsh he was with Akane and Soda 5minutes later? Besides Nagito canonicaly felt the closest to Hajime, so learning the guy he considered his closest friend was not only an ultimate sespair but the mastermind behind everything? He went REALLY SOFT on Hajime. He even apologised to him in his will, saying he was jealous of his status as the protagonist, he didn't give that to anyone else he bullied after the funhouse.
Also i just want to point out that Nagito having dementia messed up his brain so he NEVER realise when he's being an asshole unless he's doing the sassy pose
I hope i didn't come off to harsh, i don't disagree with everything, and i do respect your opinion. I really like your work and hope to see more of it in the future

very late to this but a lot of the reason I like nagito is because everything he does is completely in earnest and he believes everything he says. idk it just makes him really interesting to me

I just want to disagree about makoto.
I don't think he had an inferiority complex.
He seem to be content with his normal guy status.

As a Nagito fan, I also don't ship KomaHina. If it's an AU where Nagito's personality has been toned down by therapy, I can accept it. But I'm not very interested in ships that need to change one of the characters in order to work. I prefer Nagito with Nekomaru, personally, because if anyone can find worth in Nagito and diminish his self-loathing attitude, it's the Ultimate Team Manager.
I also don't see the appeal in simping for Nagito. If you want a twink with low self-confidence, just go for Kazuichi. At least he has shark teeth and cool hair.

yeah, I think we generally agree, as far as Nagito is concerned. he's a brilliantly written character, everything he does makes sense given his background and worldview but it takes just long enough to crack those two points that he keeps you guessing through the entire runtime of DR2, and he fits REALLY well into the key themes of Hope and Despair for the Hopes Peak saga. but I also hate his guts lol get this kid to therapy
Kokichi...is similarly important to V3's core theme of truth and lies, but annoys me so much more. he just comes off as contrarian, his free time events do...nothing but cement that point, and he's a guy who the narrative has to bend over backwards to give him the same level of foreknowledge and insight that Nagito got through luck. on paper, getting that info through luck should be more annoying, but it...kind of isn't? because of it being his talent all along. I never find myself asking "how does he know this? where is this coming from??" like I do with Kokichi
...in the end, let me put it this way. If I approach Nagito, with a certain level of tenderness and human empathy in my heart, and full knowledge of where his damage comes from, Nagito feels like he could be talked down from the crazy-bomber cliff edge. but Kokichi? nah, the second I try, he'll just judo-flip me over the edge and cackle at my ragdolling corpse as it tumbles down the rocks. so I'd honestly just rather shoot him and end all of our misery

I understand your opinion and respect it and in some parts i agree, but you just gave me an opportunity to whine about pokemon, sooo... if you think nagito having much more attention than other characters is upsetting, then just think about it how like half of the community feels when charizard gets forced into EVERY. GODDAMN. GAME. like i get it, it's a flying lizard that is breathing fire, but there's also a lot of different mons that just needs anything, like greninja is literally fan favorite mon right now and you can't even have it, it doesn't even make sense
Tl;dr nagito = lizard on fire

Honestly I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like komahina as a ship.
I love both characters, but I never felt that they could work as a romantic pairing.
I've always preferred seeing their dynamic as two sides of the same coin, where they're both characters that admire success and talent but one chose to give up on his self worth because of that and the other learned to believe in his future.
Heck Nagito himself brings up many times that he and hajime are alike as well so there's also that.

I think I like nagito more as the rival character mostly because most of the cast know he’s fucked up but they hate him. Also the game does not try to shove down your throat that Nagito is a good guy, instead they tell us he’s fucking psychotic. In v3 it felt like they were trying so hard to make Kokichi the good guy, which annoyed me. Nagito, the cast and the game itself knows that Nagito is fucked up.
