      I have a book recommendation that quite litterally blew me away with how it blows all the troupes and the mc always wins story telling away. It made me question and wallow in dispair on how the mc will wiggle out of his dire situations he finds himself in. Many times in the story i feel like the mc would genuinely lose for real, but he finds engenius ways to win. So please check it out. Its called Legend of the Arch Magus. The world, story telling, characters all made me fell in love and i would love for you to enjoy it as much as i did.

    I said I didn't mind much about stat sheets as a response on your tweet the other day. I think I want to change my answer lol. I like stat sheets that showcase the character, I don't care about the ones that are just labels with loads of numbers, I'm not reading these stories for the gaming aspect, I'm reading them for the escapism/power fantasy aspect.
    As for your point about the world building and intro plot being basic and ripped from that one game, I think it's not gonna change and to me its a hallmark of the medium because it's immensely easy shorthand for epic fantasy without having to actually spend the 200 or so pages normal novels would take to lore dump the world. if you remove it or start with a massive bit of exposition it'll change the way the reader engages with those works. As someone that reads both, I'd probably stop reading LNs if they did more standard world building because it would remove one of the things I find to be a strength of the medium.

      See I feel different. A lot of these games do the same as Light Novels by having you the player discover things as they go along. I don't see why they can have unique or interesting worlds and locations while LNs largely just retread the same ones.

    I love all of these, by which i mean I too am rather tired of all these particular tropes lol. I love your list is what i meant to say
    I've been enjoying 'Instant Death Ability' quite a lot. The most interesting thing about it is the tone. The main story is very light hearted, comedic and with the goal of returning home. Each book has a closing chapter about the (genuinely) omnipotent death god's childhood that is mysterious and seriously creepy and scary. It really puts a lovely accent on the main story.
    Not a light novel series but The Wandering Inn has one of the most unique and probably the most effective (for immersion and storytelling) ways of including LitRPG elements into the world. No pages of stat-sheets but people can gain classes like receptionist, gossip and [innkeeper]. The series also includes very effective use of creatures and people that exist in the world outside of the 'tame' litrpg system - these entities are often scary and creepy and wonderous in such magnificent ways. combining full folklore witchy magic together with litrpg magic in such a way as to make both elements thrive :)

    yea I agree with a lot of this stuff. I'm generally ok with characters that might follow a trope but a lot of these cliches sort of dominate the story in a really uncreative and boring way. I think the boring protagonist is especially fatal to a book, where you are reading their internal dialogue pretty much 80% of the time. Anime and manga might get away with it, but not a LN. I usually just drop the book straight away when the protagonist clearly has no personality within the first 2 chapters. Give me a weird, interesting, or relatable main character and I'm ready to give it a try. I know that the blank slate characters are supposed to be generically relatable but honestly I'd like to think that I have a bit more personality than these bland MCs.
    I agree with this problem being partly from us not being the "target" demographic but to be honest a lot adult literature/fiction titles are just goddamn dry in my opinion.

    Stats aren't hardly ever implemented well and I know this because I literally study TTRPGs for more than half my life. If you're going to add stats then you have to put a ton of emphasis of their abilities and have the characters figure eachother other out to counter abilities or work around them. For example in D&D skeletons take extra damage through blunt weapons, in D&D 3.5 edition there's an ability that can be broken called attack of opportunity that allows you to get a free atack whenever anything moves within the spaces of characters and can be used with a glaive thay extends the space which essentially turns you into a wall, then how spells require a saving throw for them to work aginst creatures which doesn't always mean success whenever they are casted, and so many things. You have to make stats matter and you have to make the abilities emphasized during combat. It's something a lot and I mean like 99% of these novels get wrong oddly enough. I honestly think it's because they literally have a basic understanding of design when it comes to TTRPGs and don't totally have the understanding of the depth when it comes to rules and how to exploit them. It's why stats in these stories are a pet peeve of mine as well because I know how well they could implement in the story but just totally fail at it. It's just so bizarre.

    • @doublestarships646
      @doublestarships646 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThatLightNovelGuy That's why I would use card games that use keywords like Magic. You only have to explain the keyword once and the game doesn't have walls of texts as well. Magic is easy to explain too. Yu-Gi-Oh would be difficult because you literally have to play like 15 cards on your turn where in Magic it's usually 1-5. So I would create a game that uses keywords often, not much wording and each turn usually 1-5 cards are played to keep it from dragging on.

    To be honest, I don't mind the typical LN fantasy setting all that much as long as the characters and plot are decent enough. Don't get me wrong, a unique world is always a plus, but at the same time if the world is relatively standard as an author there is much less to explain about the world and theoretically the author can focus more on characters and story. Granted, the bland fantasy world often comes with a lot of other baggage, but to me it is not a red flag. Note btw that I have as of yet not come across a world in LN that feels like D&D. It is all JRPGs and that includes the monsters (although that can be a bit difficult to judge since I am sure there are crossovers between the two with D&D designers playing JRPGs and Japanese authors likely playing western games and certainly watching western Fantasy). Sure, they avoid wacky looking critters, but lets be honest, that would be a pain to get across in the written word ;)

Three he rescues from a very crappy situation, and at the time he cannot set them free easily. He later on does free them (society in the book is not that kind and the MC is not the type to start a war for it). There he is offered the other two, who are cursed and one is a reincarnation from Japan. The curse forces them to become slaves to whomever they first meet if not owned. He hasn't found a cure yet. Mind you, Death March does suffer from the "everybody with two X-chromosomes falls in love with him (most are rescued by him) even though the MC himself does not feel the same way at least...
