I got caught out on the misleading marketing as well, in relation to the advertising images showing the number pad incorporated into the touchpad.
I purchased the laptop with the expectation of this feature. The images clearly show a number pad included in the touchpad.
When I turned the laptop on for the first time, I discovered there was no number pad.
I contacted ASUS immediately, who sent me a link to the latest number pad driver, which didn't sort the problem.
To their credit, they eventually offered to have the laptop picked up and sent to one of their service centres. Upon my request a ASUS representative confirmed the laptop did have the feature. A week later, the service centre emailed, advising that they had checked with ASUS who said the laptop didn't have the feature and they were returning the laptop to me!!
I contacted ASUS with this information. They were quite blunt with their reply, placing the blame back on me, claiming that I should have confirmed the features with the place of purchase and washed their hands of any further responsibility!!! How ridiculous is that ? So is it the buyers responsibility to confirm every specification and feature advertised on ASUS's own website ? How far do you go ?
So I lodged a complaint with the Office of Fair Trading, providing the email trail with ASUS support (which included confirmation from one of their own representatives that this model did include a numberpad) and screenshots from their own website clearly depicting the laptop with the number pad feature as evidence.
A few weeks later I received a reply to my email from Fair Trading that included ASUS Australia's response claiming they are "not the reseller, supplier, importer, or manufacturer of this product or its representative; we are the manufacturer's appointed Service Agent to provide Service and repair for ASUS products in Australia"
However, due to the intervention of Fair Trading, they did agree "in good faith"...... to provide me with a full refund of the purchase price if I return it to the place of sale. Unfortunately I purchased it from a retailer from the other side of the country, and I will have to wear the postage. So it's still going to cost me quite a bit in postage, but at least I do get my purchase price back and can choose a laptop that does meet my needs.
But yeah, BUYER BEWARE of ASUS's misleading advertising and they won't stand by their product advertising, instead throwing the blame back on their customers.

I loved my ROG STRIX SCAR. Then at only 3 months old, the display panel died completely, and the "worldwide support" advised me to drop it into the nearest authorized repairer - over 200 km away. Before you buy, check where you will need to take it if it breaks for warranty repairs, which could be a deal breaker. For the price, I genuinely expected a higher quality of QA and parts, as I had a previous ROG laptop that worked beautifully for years. Sadly, this brand has badly let me down when I paid a premium to have a "reliable and quality" laptop. NOT recommended.

When Asus was releasing it at CES, they mentioned up to RTX4080, up to same screen as Scars, up to 13980hx, just up to a single 2TB instead of RAID0 of 2x1TB found in Scars, minus the LEDs at the back in favor of either lime-green on shining black colored accents in ROG logo, rear panel cover and bottom panel fragments... and that for less than Scar with the same specs... and now? Most regions come without the RTX4080 option at all, neither do they get the screens or touchpads, nor the top CPUs, nor the combination of promised components. I guess people at Asus realised that if they release Strix G16/G18 with the same components as Scar 16/18, the sales of the latter will dwindle or plummet... so they limited Strix G16/G18 to the mediocre or mid-level components, and yet still had the audacity to keep the "up to" promised specs still present on the product page due to one or two regions actually getting those in limited numbers... and still, the pricing on these remains pretty high for those subpar choices that barely make a difference against last gen Strix units with higher (or same) "grade" components of previous gen.

One thing just wanted to point out about this and your previous laptop reviews about maximum memory support limited to 32GB. That is not true in any of the modern laptops and it supports as much as possible supported by that CPU and available memory slots. That 32GB number you see is the maximum the manufacturers offer for that laptop model, not the absolute limit. This Laptop and plenty of other laptops reviewed in your channel, with 32GB max, have been upgraded with 64GB without any issues. Lenovo now even in their Psref (Product Reference Page), started mentioning the term "XY GB maximum Ram offering" instead of "XY GB Maximum Supported". At least for last 10 years, no laptop manufacturers are known to artificially limiting the maximum ram capacity below what is supported by the Processor, if it has the Ram slots for the expansion.

On the question about laptop speakers. Before I bought my 2021 Asus Zephyrus G15, I didn’t care about laptop speakers. But once I got my G15, all that changed. 6 speakers with Dolby Atmos support in a small chassis with great thermals and performance. That proved to me that you can get good speakers on a gaming laptop. It’s just typically another corner where costs can be cut. That & the webcam (which mine doesn’t have). There’s no excuse for a crappy 720p webcam in 2023.

I don’t really care that much about speakers on a gaming laptop in this class. Its main focus is on gaming. If you’re gaming you’re almost always using a headset to communicate or hear footsteps. They also block out the fan noise. When using the laptop for more laptop things they suffice. Some of these bottom facing laptop speakers are better than others but ultimately they all suffer the same uphill battle. On my Lenovo I would say they suffice for my use but they aren’t great, I don’t really care though.

The backlight bleed issue from ASUS is getting out of control and it does not matter at all on how much you spend. I spent a ton last year on a top spec Zephyrs 17 that had the worst backlight bleed I have ever seen in my life. I mean so bad that the bottom right quadrant was completely washed out even on the desktop. ASUS said this was normal and refused to do anything about it, I had to fight with the seller for a while to get it returned in full because ASUS does not consider backlight bleed a defect. It was flat out beyond normal bleed, it was defect level. After that I got a G15 AE that had a ton of bleed though not nearly as bad, Tried a Scar 17 that had a bunch of bleed worse than the G15 but not as bad as the Zephyrs. The Current Strix 18 has a 3.3 rating on BestBuy due to backlight bleed issues. If they could just get that sorted, ASUS would be killing it. Super disappointing.
To answer the question, Yes I care 100% about built in speakers. My current daily driver (granted not for gaming lol) is a 16' M1 MBP. The Speakers are fantastic and I use this to listen to music in the office, kitchen, ect... When I start up a gaming laptop that usually has much worse speakers, I don't even want to watch TH-cam let alone listen to music. These gaming laptops, especially for their price should be spec'ed to the 9s with everything. Don't get me wrong, I love gaming laptops, but the very lack luster speakers is one of the reasons I have not been able to make a gaming laptop my daily driver when I can't even watch TH-cam knowing it sounds so much worse and then I end up going back to my MBP.

Great review as always, I do also agree that it is a bit of an odd ball when it comes to its specs. I would have preferred that they used a bit of a lower end CPU and pumped a bit more wattage into that 4070, but overall, it's still a good machine.
It's a shame that they couldn't put their Nebula 500 nit display in this, but after seeing your benchmarks, I can see why they put the 1200p display into it. I'm also a bit disappointed that they're not using a full metal construction with it, and with the Scar 16, I am extremely disappointed that they didn't, but it's at least built well so it's not the end of the world.
What I absolutely can't accept is that they have only a 720p webcam without any sort of biometrics. I am going to be upgrading to the Scar 16 from my Flow X13, and I will for sure absolutely miss the fingerprint sensor on it, and not to mention, I'll be missing out on Windows Hello IR.
Once again, fantastic review, keep up the great work!
Edit: It seems like after checking the product page for the Strix G16, they do have a model with the Nebula QHD display, but they also have a 4050 model with the Nebula QHD display too???? I am extremely confused with Asus' thought process for these specs.

I just want to let you guys know that in 2017 I bought an Asus Vibobook Pro for 1000USD. For that price I got 16GB RAM, i7 7700HQ, GTX 1050 (4GB), 500GB SSD, the same peak brightness as this PC (~300NITS), Metal Chassis, Harman Kardon Audio (which can only be defeated by Dolby Atmos and Apple's Audio).
That was 2017 in April, 6 years ago! It still works and covered me for even Cyberpunk 2077 in mid 720p settings! 😂
The thing I want you guys to think about is why would you want to pay for this if you really are only getting a better GPU and a 40ish % better CPU.
A laptop that is chungus, plastic, with very mid display, forces you to pay 2300USD simply isn't right. Asus is milking you just so you can play 2-3 50USD games, while serving products that really shouldn't be above 1400-1500USD.
The same tier VivobookPro for the new generation is literally 100USD more on Amazon. And this PC is literally 1000USD more @2000USD but for what?
For 1500USD you can just get an Asus 16x with literally better specs and a higher quality build. You'll get about 15% less performance in CPU and the GPU will be around there too. But the build quality will be premium and at least worth your money...
