I'm learning this as a hobby and want to get really damn good at it. I'm 20 years old and I cannot shake the thought that in too late, I see the best guitarist being passionate about it since they are like 14-16 years old and I'm stressed out about college work, I have depression and anxiety and it affects my learning. I'm mad at the fact that I couldn't start sooner, didn't have any resources and it sucks.
My mother did a physics degree aged 40 and rebooted her career at age 60. I just picked up guitar in my 30s. My friend was an accountant for 10 years then sacked it off to become a self-employed gardener, because he realised he wanted to be outdoors - he has his own business now.
I love your videos! Thx for being passionate about teaching for free this is exactly what I needed! I’m a self taught player and jumped the gun too soon now I’m coming back for more. I don’t have time to go take lessons anywhere with kids but I made time here at home and I’m soooo glad I found your Info you’re better than any teacher in person seriously. This is a great video, excellent advice. I only offer this as someone who is no more than, at best, an advanced beginner or maybe early intermediate. Relax. Enjoy it. And by that I mean, relax into the basic things described in the video and don't judge yourself. The less worried you are about doing it exactly, the more you'll find yourself leaning into the right way to do it. The guitar just seems to be made that way... the more you relax about, the more you become familiar with it. Like so much I've tried, it seems the less I try to control everything, the easier it all becomes.
HI Yves here 51 years old beginner thanks a lot for the fingers position tricks i was getting discouraged already with my fingers catching the next string.Really helpfull
••• I love your approach to teaching guitar; I live in Franklin, Tennessee and would love to take some classes from you... keep up your awesomeness!!! Kieffer.
If I may add: don't be afraid to take a break. In my case the break was like 10 years - by the end of my first stint I hated guitar, was burnt out. Over time this faded and one day I really wanted to do it again, and it was a joy. The skills don't vanish either, it's like getting back on a bike, your body just remembers.
Thank you for your tips. I've been holding it like a shovel, I don't tuck the guitar close to my body and i hold it the classical way. When I practiced bar chords, it makes the thumb muscle in my palm hurt (never even knew it existed before). Not only is my thumb twards the top but I'm putting a lot of strain on one finger just to keep everything in place, for a bar chord. I even got better at playing the bar chords in this bad position. Thanks for the correction.
You remind me of a younger James Hetfield :D Great work, Have been watching your videos for years..Your good at putting everything in perspective, like why i wanted to play guitar in the first place ! Thanks from Ireland :)

Thanks my brother over the last five years I have started and quit several times Learning to play the guitar. My problem was solved by you explaining that my fingers were NOT too short ! My Respects
Thank you SO MUCH for the tip on how to hold the guitar, i used to learn guitar with a teacher for 2 years, then i took a 1 year break, this year i wanted to go back, but this time i wanted to learn on my own, using youtube tutorials and stuff like that, so anyway i remember my teacher used to teach me the "classical" way of holding the guitar and it used to give me SO MUCH back pain, which was one of the biggest reasons that got me to quit for 1 year.. i think the 2nd way of holding it is much more comfortable and practical
Buffalo 7 that is true I am fairly new but my fingers are used to it doesn’t hurt as much. Just keep playing chords until your fingers hurts and then stop. But don’t give up because your fingers won’t hurt after a little whe
I bought a guitar today and went straight to learning chords, the two things I know I've definitely not been helping myself with was wrapping my thumb around the top of the neck, I guess I started doing this as it felt more comfortable as mentioned in the video. The second mistake was the picking technique, I realise I was picking the string and going out with my pick, very handy tips to find out, the other things mentioned in the video was okay with (e.g. using your finger tips to press on the strings) it was just those two I didn't realise were a big no no! Very Helpful video, will remember these tips in the morning when I go for another practice!

I’ve been playing keys for 20 years and am very advanced and I just started tying to learn guitar because it’s still my favorite instrument that always speaks to me but I get so frustrated trying to stretch my fingers to fit certain chords and change shapes so fast. I find myself thinking “this is so annoying how the hell do these guys stretch their hands like that so easily?” Then you reminded us that it feels uncomfortable for everybody until it doesn’t. That was a huge but simple reminder for me. I started playing keys because I was interested and curios and never thought about being great on it but I got better everyday. Just goin to keep practicing and learn the fundamentals because I can get really good tone and recordings just struggle with the chord voicings and find coordination. The funny part is a lot of producers I sent melodies too think I’m a great guitar player but they don’t know I play stuff one string at a time lol
I feel like left handed guitarists have an advantage on the so called 'right-handed guitar', the fretting hand has to have more dexterity and strength than the strumming hand. I'm sure the job of the right hand gets more complicated as you advance, but by then you're a musician and your non-dominant hand gains super powers 😁
Wow your cool haha, I'm thinking on buying a guitar as a hobby just because I really like the sound of them and I think people that play them are awesome. I'm 16 and have never played an instrument in my life. I'm just wondering what price range I should be looking at?
You can get a great entry guitar for under 1k but avoid the crappy $100 ones. Something like a Fender Mexican Stratocaster or Epiphone Les Paul are great value for the money or if you want a metal guitar you can get a decent Schecter or Jackson for $300-600.
Look for ESP-LTDs, Schecters and Yamahas. Avoid guitars with tremolos and especially Floyd roses. You can find a good instrument for 150-250 USD. Avoid cheap brands like Harley Benton.
1st tip is actually really true, when I played the Cello for the first time I sucked at it so much but I practiced and hour or even two hours everyday and I was already way above most kids in my orchestra class.
A little acronym to help you with standard tuning: Eddie Ate Dynamite Good By Eddie - EADGBE, easy. After 6 months of teaching myself guitar I can offer some novice advice: number one: don't even breathe on your guitar unless it's tuned. Wood expands when it's warm and contracts when it's cold. These contractions will throw your tuning off. Two: get an inexpensive compression pedal. Compression helps "even out" each note on the guitar and kills some of the unwanted noise generated while playing. Three : make sure you have a guitar pick everywhere! One on top of your amp, one on top the DAC if you use a DAW and maybe fit one in between your guitar strings because the minute you plug in, your going to go looking for a pick.
"And really, that's not a chord at all." You cracked me up hard with that one. Thanks for the help. My hands really are too small, but my fingers are long, so I will be a guitar player, one day.🤩
I'm going to buy my first guitar tomorrow. I have played bass for a year, about ten years ago. So I think I'll be able to play happy birthday by Christmas, so anything I learn faster than that is nice. Haha

Hello, just started learning to play the guitar today. Thanks for showing how to hold the guitar, I was having such a hard time until I watched your video!
Sightseeing not really, he just knew he wouldn’t never have a smooth soulful voice so he used the voice he had which was appealing in different respects.
Kurt Cobain expressed his feelings through music. If you wanna listen to perfect play then pick a music program and let it play notes to you. If you like vocals, add some autotune. Music loses its soul and perfect notes are played. You're welcome.
Sorry but to say Kurt didn't have talent is just ignorant. Yeah he wasn't SRV and the likes. But some of his solos like School and stuff are pretty good. He had a great ear for melody. He could play better than people want to admit and was a great song writer. It's not like you can hand some kid a Nirvana songbook and in a month they can play any Nirvana song. Hell half of these "experts" and "pros" can't even get the strumming pattern and miss notes in songs. Smells like Teen Spirit might be 4 chords yet it's butchered soooooo much by people. His solos get butchered as hell too. He was unique and yeah wasnt an amazing technical player but he surely didn't lack talent. And he gets shit on so much by people who haven't even heard most of his better stuff that's not on the radio. The fact inspired so many people to pick up guitars because of his music says enough. For having "no talent" the guy sold a hell of a lot more records than everyone that talks shit, because he knew melody and realized you didn't need to shred solos to make good music. Also was a master of controlling feedback for how fucking loud they played and incorporated it into solos and shit. Just TH-cam nirvana covers and you'll find 100s of people butchering the hell out of basic shit like Polly, THATS lack of talent hah.
Skylar O'kane Kurts voice was plenty smooth when he wanted it to be...All Apologies, Something in the Way, Dumb, Polly...He also had a hell of a vocal range. He could have been an amazing singer if he let someone really teach him how to use it better because he was hurting his voice touring so much and screaming night in night out. He tried to take vocal lessons and never went back. Not like it matters he's dead but his vocal range was pretty good, and definitely could of been a lot better.
Thanks, very helpful! I've been practicing about a month now, thumb behind the neck and everything. I've practiced off and on for years and this is the longest I've stuck with it. My calluses are developing, it's quite gratifying. I just keep pushing through even though it still feels crazy unnatural and super challenging as though I'm never going to get this. I've just been determined. So hearing someone say that about how awkward the wrist and everything feels and will feel until it just doesn't anymore was the best advice for me right now. And actually why I clicked on the video, I was thinking it was just me.. Ha! ❤️ So yes! BIG THANKS, Thank you very much!!
Wow, this video has hit home quite hard. I've been playing guitar (on and off) for about 20 years but I don't feel like I'm any further along or any better than I was back then. I feel like I'm stuck with bad habits because I didn't have anyone teaching me and I couldn't afford lessons back then. Bad habits like - my fretting hand feels very stiff and 'glued' to the neck making it hard to move up and down the neck; my index finger has a death grip on the neck so if I try to learn a riff or something, I always start on my index finger so it's difficult to easily move around the fretboard; I do exactly what you describe here when picking - hand moves away from the strings. Thank you for such a blunt and straightforward video, it has made me totally rethink how I'm doing everything - oh, and I'm starting guitar lessons in the next few weeks, first one ever! Back to basics.
Wow, you really got my negative self talk and excuses to beg for my forgiveness! Picked up my 1970 classical guitar after 50 years of not playing and stumbled on your video. Love your humor and help!

Getting my first electric guitar this wednesday. Wanted to go electric so I don't subject my wife to a trash compactor going off. I can plug it into my headphones and practice as much as I want. Your videos have been an excellent primer and I will be re-watching them when I get it. Thanks for the time you put into these videos.
"Guy with no arms playing feet"
I like how unscripted this js
Dude, great "Get over the BS" for beginners video. I really appreciate it, helped me figure out what I need to focus on...as simple as that sounds, now just put it in 'practice'. Also, straight to the point too. Thanks again.
My hand just got HUUUUUUGE! lol
Haha! 😂👍
I recently saw you playing "it's all wright mama" from Elvis. And you may not believe it, but since then I want to learn playing Guitar! 😃👍
Be sure not to forget the "yourguitarsage" part from "basic fingering technique", because you are going to find vastly differing results.
Thank you for your time and wisdom!!
You are so kind! Thank you so much Kara. The perfect place to find out if you have the essentials down, just watch my top 30 videos which I provide now for free at www.yourguitarsage.com/30
You look a bit like Ben Affleck lol

Thank you for this wonderful video, the awesome tips and your human-kindness. Just the sort of guide and teacher I need. I’ll follow you!
Just started practicing today since i borrowed my friend’s guitar.
Robert Joseph MacCready keep at it man ! You’ won’t regret it !
Same I started last year took a break now I’m back at it again full force.
Thank you a lot. I have struggled with my hands thinking that they are not large enough to play the guitar😅
Keep it up!👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you my friend.

Eric, I just spotted "Your Guitarsage" on a list of Top 5 Online Guitar Lessions. I agree
He’s good down to earth I think I’ll try his course and hopefully learn to play at last cheers Larry in London
For a new guitar player, how long a day would you recommend for practicing?
In the beginning start with 30 mins every day, once your fingers are used to the feeling you can slowly build up the amount of playing time.
@@danielasselbergs8325 thanks man
Buffalo 7 that is true I am fairly new but my fingers are used to it doesn’t hurt as much.
Very helpful and motivating! Thanks.

I'm a lefty but I have right handed guitar ;-;
Hey buddy ... I am from India ... I have started learning guitar . Thanks for ur valuable words ... I wish I can become a good guitar player like u
Good luck dude, you can!
Thank you so much! God bless you!
Yes you're right for beginners thumb is at back and i do play some song with finger style thanks
Wow your cool haha, I'm thinking on buying a guitar as a hobby just because I really like the sound of them and I think people that play them are awesome. I'm 16 and have never played an instrument in my life. I'm just wondering what price range I should be looking at?
$100 and up. Glad you are here my friend! Start at the free course: www.yourguitarsage.com/30
You can get a great entry guitar for under 1k but avoid the crappy $100 ones. Something like a Fender Mexican Stratocaster or Epiphone Les Paul are great value for the money or if you want a metal guitar you can get a decent Schecter or Jackson for $300-600.
Sal De Luca look at a Yamaha F335. It's a really good sounding guitar and it's only $150
Look for ESP-LTDs, Schecters and Yamahas. Avoid guitars with tremolos and especially Floyd roses. You can find a good instrument for 150-250 USD. Avoid cheap brands like Harley Benton.
+Dialogue with the Stars Why avoid tremolos and Floyd-Rose's? Is it just because of how awkward they are to set up? Or just the price?
Just had to buy in. Looking forward to the insights and training!
I'm glad he said the solar system,
Cause I'm watching from Mars 😃
I like the pick resting on the next string so that I know which gear I'm in for the next attack.

I saw the typo and I immediately went to the comments😂 2:19
1st tip is actually really true, when I played the Cello for the first time I sucked at it so much but I practiced and hour or even two hours everyday and I was already way above most kids in my orchestra class.
God I love this guys can he be my dad please adopt me
LOL!!!!!
One on top of your amp, one on top the DAC if you use a DAW and maybe fit one in between your guitar strings because the minute you plug in, your going to go looking for a pick.
my hand's too small to play chords with my thumb over the top of the neck. Also you look kind of like James Hetfield
That will come with time my friend. Yes I get the James Hetfield thing a lot.
YourGuitarSage it’s cool though :)
Thanks! Right amount of information, right amount of explanation and right amount of humor.
Crap I click on one guitar video and now I have half of my recommendations about guitars....
"And really, that's not a chord at all."
You cracked me up hard with that one.
Thanks for the help.
My hands really are too small, but my fingers are long, so I will be a guitar player, one day.🤩
This is more like advice but thanks just got a guitar today

@@yourguitarsage dang dude you still reply after this long. You're a good man
You're probably a god now right
been playing guitar since 1960 but llots of things learned from this.
Talent is very real. But it’s not required for success. It definitely helps though
The small hands part really encouraged me. Thank you! Reminds me of skateboarding and getting comfortable on the board.

Some people learn alot faster than others, and some people are much more musical

I'm going to buy my first guitar tomorrow. I have played bass for a year, about ten years ago. So I think I'll be able to play happy birthday by Christmas, so anything I learn faster than that is nice. Haha
Geir olav nah. I disagree.
It isn't that they are more musical, it's that they are more open to learning and have more interest in the subject. The rest is practice.
I just turned 70 yrs old, always wanted to learn guitar and never did but damn now I’m going to learn as much as I can until my time is up,I don’t want that regret…just watched you for the first time, your great and will probably be my main resource….ideas for my first guitar?..something quality to get it going..but not too expensive…thank you so much,John

Hello, just started learning to play the guitar today. Thanks for showing how to hold the guitar, I was having such a hard time until I watched your video!
"You're not born with talent" I was really waiting for him to mention Kurt Cobain, the exception.
Except he was a shitty guitar singer with an average voice who just happened to be good at writing things.
Thumbs, fingertips, and pick resting. I feel like you've helped me learn so much already and I haven't even picked my guitar up yet!

Your tips are very helpful, especially the second one ("Your hands are not too small") as that was what I had been thinking. Thank you for sharing!
This guy looks like an older Ryan Reynolds.
Ha! ❤️ So yes! BIG THANKS, Thank you very much!!
my hands still don't fit the guitar lol. but i have a big neck on my guitar. but i am getting better thanks for the info
Thank you so much! I’m getting a guitar on Tuesday!
Man dropping link plugs every 30 damn seconds. We get it. Damn.
Wow, you really got my negative self talk and excuses to beg for my forgiveness! Picked up my 1970 classical guitar after 50 years of not playing and stumbled on your video. Love your humor and help!
