MICHELLE MCLEAN - former Miss Universe 1992
Michelle McLean, is a Namibian legend, an actress, writer, model and beauty queen, who was crowned Miss Universe on 9 May 1992 in Bangkok, Thailand. Michelle was 19 years old when she was crowned Miss Universe, and became the first Namibian woman to win the title. Michelle had been crowned Miss Namibia 1991 before Miss Universe in 1992.
On Sunday 25th February 2024, Michelle McLean was seen entering the venue for the burial proceedings of the departed President of Namibia, H.E Dr. Hage Gottfried Geingob, at the Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek Namibia, (President Geingob passed on, on Sunday 4th February 2024) . Michelle is seen waving at the crowd which gathered to give their last respect to the departed President.
Upon learning that the president was no more, Michelle wrote on her Instagram page on 5 February 2024, and I quote “President Geingob was an inspirational man, phenomenal leader, and I’m privileged to say a mentor to me, who played a pivotal role in my life since the incredible journey of winning Miss Namibia in 1991 and subsequently Miss Universe in 1992”. “To the Namibian Nation, I share in your grief, and I send my heartfelt blessings to a country mourning the loss of a remarkable statesman. President Geingob’s leadership was a beacon of inspiration, driving positive change and unity. As we remember and celebrate our Dearest President Hage Geingob, let us build on the legacy of his life’s work and his vision of continuing the great successes of Namibia. Our wonderful country, the Land of the Brave!”.
As Namibians we feel blessed having these heartfelt words from Michelle.
Am still talking about the beauty queen, who hails from the Namibian soil, from the Land of the Brave, Michelle Mclean:-
Michelle’s love for charity is worth an honour. The Michelle McLean Children's Trust in Namibia, which focuses on the education and care of under-privileged children was founded in 1992 and has raised millions of dollars to help children in her native Namibia, in Southern Africa.
Besides, Michelle was named after a school which goes by the name Michelle McLean Primary School of which she often visits to assist and encourage the youth of Namibia to commit themselves to their future and to the future of Namibia. The school was built in Otjomuise, Windhoek in 2000 as a state school in a joint venture with the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (formerly known as Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture).
Michelle who put Namibia on the map when she won Miss Universe in 1992, was also named Top Humanitarian and Entrepreneur 2021.
She has worked with Hollywood’s favourite philanthropists, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
To date, Mclean is a global ambassador for Namibia, representing Namibia abroad in various spectrums. She is a businesswoman, a Global Ambassador for Investment and Tourism for Namibia, an International Business Representative for the Ohlthaver and List Group, as well as a Liaison Officer for the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board.
Miss Universe is an annual international major beauty pageant that is run by a United States and Thailand-based Miss Universe Organization. Along with Miss World, Miss International, and Miss Earth, it is one of the Big Four beauty pageants.
