    What a brilliant Senator. If he was the Minister of Defence he might even be able to sort out the mess that constitutes our apologie for a Defence Department.

    Imagine not having to consider life extension if our acquisition process wasn't so blown out, so much indecisiveness in the leadership of Defence.

    How long we going to waste time and money on Collin’s Class submarines?

    • @XxBloggs
      @XxBloggs 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Until they are fully replaced by the Virginia and some of the SSN AUKUS subs. That could be 10 years. They need upgrades to be capable in the future.

    I would fire these guys , buy a few off the shelf cheapies from South Korea and set a longer time to upgrade he collins to extend them for another 15 years and integrate them into a fleet which includes the nuke subs so that when the nukes start arriving there is still a reasonable size D.E. fleet.

    Navy and CASG have seriously meddled with Collins since inception, ASC does its best but is continuously messed around by these idiots, CASG wouldn't even let them upgrade the galleys in the past. THe poor buggers who man these vessels have to pay the price for this public service bludging.

      You are conveniently ignoring the 5 Lib defence ministers who actively degraded the platform. one was hostile to subs, one was a barely functioning alcoholic who should neve rhave been in the portfolio, one was only inmterested in joy rides and photo ops. and there is no shortage of Miisters staffers sent in to gate reviews who didn't even understand the basics of the capability and sought delays - adding 6-9months to every delayed gate review. blaming CASG/CIOG and RAN is a bit cute by half

  • @jbh2761
    @jbh2761 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    All wrong … the people who know what’s needed best for upgrades is the people operating the subs eg the submariners .. they give a list to the contractors and work with them for the best outcomes … layers of bureaucracy send the process backwards .

    Primary first question if I were Senator
    * HOW LONG would our 6 Collins class subs last in a fight?
    Further question
    * if we upgrade them, would the upgrades increase their survivability by HOW MUCH longer in fight situation
    Could an enemy take out our sub capability in the first week & after upgrades would the fleets survivability increase by days weeks months or…
    We have averaged only 1 Collins class sub operational across the life of the Collins classes fleet

    The USA awareness of opposing hypersonic missiles and the pointlessness of conventional Harpoon and Cruise missiles which will never have stealth against look-down radars, Lidar and smart cameras on aircaft and satellites is part of a halt on Virginia and makes Collins even more absurd. There are billion dollar container ship cargoes and choke points in maritime trade routes and Collins Class was never up to maritime raiding the vast tonnages needed to be crippling or any attempt at an embargo. The acceptance that Collins is incapable of defending even the ultra low frequency radios or any port and the only role left is giving union members a reason to vote the Conjob Conroy ticket in union elections.

      Kongsberg NSM offered a sub launched version is very stealthy and capable whilst Tomahawk has a very long range factor and has a history of defeating Russian IADS.
      Lookdown shootdown radar have to be in the right place at the right time and fighter time on station is short and limited with not many nations having carriers at sea. Lockheed is exploring LRASM as a sub launched option.
      Lidar do have depth limitations in sub detections.
      Stealth conventional quite subs still hold a capability.
      Unions protect workers rights and conditions in a modern ruthless corporate world.
      Ask any 20 year old Sydney sider will they own a home, answer is 70 percent no due to eroding wages and conditions.

    The Collins Class cannot be claimed to be a weapons platform if the weapons dont work. Harpoon and Stonefish do not make up for the fact that torpedoes are only weapons in cold water none of which is norh of Adelaide. In the Artic and North Sea the US torpedoes can dive below cold water margins and the layers will bounce sonar and hydrophones and the torpedoes will run for an hour before hitting enemy submarines or popping up to hit enemy surface ships. In warm water running they will be detected and every defense including launching submarine warfare helicopters and possibly launching ICBMs carrying homing torpedoes. The Collins Class is not fast nor reliable enough to intercept and follow and stalk enemy submarines nor stealthy enough to perform spy missions as a cover for other methods either. It's okay if private citizens want to upgrade sentimental old cars or renovate at vast expense the grandest mansion in Wilcannia or Marble Bar or Chernobyl with their own money. There are other ways for South Australian workers to have happier productive useful careers

      A Collin’s got well within torpedo firing distance of a US Aircraft Carrier in 2000, past their air, surface and submarine assets. Suffice to say the Americans were not happy.
