He's not a spring chicken anymore. Same thing happens to my dog who is just turning ten years old. He can still run around or do heavy activity, but if he doesn't pace himself, he pays for it afterwards. ...and same thing happens to me at 53 :)

Probably hurt himself on the run. When animals get older their joints also begin hurting really bad.
