The Top Trending Google Searches in Every US State Throughout the 2010s

- The map shows the highest trending Google searches for every state. Trending searches from 2010 to 2020 were taken from Google's annual Year in Search summary.
Google Trends provides weekly relative search interest for every search term, along with the interest by state. Using these two datasets for each term, we're able to calculate the relative search interest for every state for a particular week. Linear interpolation was used to calculate the daily search interest.

Fundamentally it shows 1) How the mainstream media shapes what the average people think and do. 2) How fast it changes, these searches move in tune with the 24 hour media cycle. 3) There is no significant regional variation, not even in Alaska or Hawaii. Really it means that your US media is good at what it does. I would be interested it see how this contrasts with your neighbours across the northern border. They are exposed to the same situations in the same language, and have access to the same media. Do this again with Canada on the map.
(1) I think you're assuming a causal relationship between trending searches and mainstream media. This map doesn't tell us anything about what mainstream news stations were showing at the time, though a correlation is a pretty safe bet. This map doesn't show us the causal relationship: the results are consistent with your expectations about that relationship, so you're concluding it establishes a causal relationship.
(2) The map uses daily trending search data for the USA. The search results are daily, so the results could correlate with anything that has a 24 hour period.
Take a look at the link below and you will find that some of the results for trending keywords were the same for the whole USA for periods of days. The results probably weren't broken down in to hours, minutes and seconds for practical reasons. The results could be grouped in to any arbitrary time period. If the results were hourly, then it would appear that the trends have hourly periods.
It's not like this shows a comprehensive list of all of the thousands upon thousands of trending searches and compares them to major news stories that were playing.
(3) Check out other videos that V1 Analytics posted and you will see that while there is a lot of uniformity in the trending searches, there are obvious examples of significant regional variation or division.
For example, arly in this video, the top trending search in the eastern half of the USA is "McDonald's nutrition" and for the western half of the country it's "Selena Gomez." I don't think we would expect to see all that much variation given the resolution of the map is at the state level and one trending search per state (per day or frame) is shown.

There is really a lot of data you can go through on Google Trends to look at regional variations. I can post some simple examples of what you'd like to see, but I bet if you just play around on it that you'd find some interesting data to discuss.

If you skip to the end and then beginning you need a stark contrast. You see how relatively disconnected the world was in 2010 compared to 2020. It shows us how prevalent social media has become and it paints a picture that the American people are brainwashed today.

I'm not too surprised: Texas and Arizona have a reputation for having a fair share of ignorance amongst their residents. While California loves to show itself as being progressive, sometimes it is absolutely backasswards and more ignorant that the Southern stereotypes (e.g. California's rulings on glyphosate are based in hatred for Monsanto and not in love of reason and evidence).

It’s pretty fascinating to see certain trends start in one of the central states and stretch out like a balloon whereas certain other trends take over the coast lines all at once and and have to instead stretch inwardly at times. Some trends take mostly the whole country by storm. It sort of shows how just different locations on land can influence the mindsets of people pushing for other ideas to surface. I’m only a minute through so it could change but I’m noticing the coastline is more comfortable with spending their time with media and technology related topics and as we get just one or two more inland on either side we see larger pattern of different food or community related trends

I always knew i was different. Of those hundreds of searches, I probably only contributed to five of them. It blows my mind how many searches there were for music that I hate. I know its mainstream, but i always assumed people listened to it because its on the radio. I never thought they would actively seek out garbage.
I feel exactly that way too. I probably only searched for about 5 of these things ever, none of this music shown matters to me, and the things I did happen to look up were the big event ones like George Floyd (but I live in Minneapolis so yeah) or coronavirus, or a shooting.
