Garden Shed and Recycling Center | S8 E10 & 11 [AI HD]

  • Norm builds a handsome and practical storage shed outside The New Yankee Workshop. The 12-by-8-foot shed with an attached recycling and rubbish center has plenty of room for the lawn mower, snow blower and other lawn and garden tools. Four windows let in the light, and a large door welcomes oversized equipment. The recycling center has enough covered space for sorting and for holding rubbish barrels. The building is finished with Western red cedar clapboards, shingles and galvanized hardware to resist the elements.
This is an HD version created using an AI program.

A long time ago there was a Beatles song where John Lennon says at the end "Thank you very much

One thing I’ve always loved about Norm Abram is that he always uses correct terminology, so when learning, ppl like me don’t have to unlearn and relearn everything. The various exterior boards, as well as joists and how it all goes together. Thank you, to Norm and the PBS team who have kept him honest over the decades. 🙏🏻

I am 50 now and remember watching the very first episode when I was about 15. I never missed an episode even though I had no access to anything to build with. It wasnt untill my 30's that I started to build things with wood. Even tgough a few years had passed since I watched an episode, all those years of watching gave me the confidence and foundation to start (before TH-cam). This old house and New Yankee workshop will always have a special place in my heart (always watched them back to back).

Norm mentions the rise and the run are both 12 inches and the tangent is those two numbers divided, so it's 12/12 or "1". Then you have to drag out the Pythagorean Theorem 😰 Thankfully because the Tangent is 1 you just have to take one side (4 feet) times the square root of 2. (1.414…). There’s the added hassle of converting to fractions but basically 4 x 1.414… = 5.656… Or just punch it into the calculator 😅

I've got a hunch that this is the kind of work Norm preferred vs. more of the fine furniture type projects covered in many episodes. There's just a fit and finish on this that is next level. All the extra jargon, the details he highlights, the effortlessness; feels like he's really in his element.
The thought being, perhaps Norm's most motivating passion is applying these kinds of classic 'Master Carpenter' techniques to more architectural type building projects. Yet to the extent you can create a differentiated television show with mass appeal, you need to branch out into projects with more mass appeal, things that people appreciate more easily, that they can and want to build themselves.
This isn't a criticism of Norm at all, or the show. And I could just be talking nonsense. This one just seemed extra special and was wondering if it was revealing some insight into what he liked, how he thought about his trade and who he was as a craftsman.

Amazing how similar this is to my shed that I built in 2012. I used 3' x8'' sonotubes for a solid base. I rented an auger to drill the holes. My shed is 7' x 7 x 14' because of space restrictions. No windows, I put a double 30'' (5' wide) door on the end for ease of entry for large objects. Old cabinets from my kitchen were used inside. A couple wall units and a wall unit underneath. I made a base and put a plywood top on it. I'm going to replace the doors with stock metal doors because the ones I got from HD didn't hold up.
