I’ve only seen one other build like this, but the other build was in a 2 story garage. They had to tear out one wall and use a crane to lower the hull to the lower level for finishing. Your build is as worthy of praise as his was back in 1960. People do not realize just how great the Glen-L plans are. Thanks for the video and allowing us to be on the water with you.
I like the way she skims across that water with almost no wake. That makes for a good river boat as you're not annoying people with a big wake. You don't feel the need to slow down, just skim by with a smile on your face.
Thanks! She has a relatively flat bottom hull so ideal for calm river cruising. Does not throw much wake on plane so it is best to keep the speed up when passing other boats. However she does not handle big water chop so well, you get pretty beat up and wet!

I love your boat!!!!! Have been considering a Malahini build myself. I have built a stitch and glue wooden kayak with bead and cove deck. Pretty sure I can handle this boat. What % of the frame is hardwood. I assume that you used OAK. There is a lot of plywood in the frame and hull. What species, thickness, and grade did you use? also very cool scarfing jig on your circular saw. Where did you find the idea / plan for that?

Graham, thank you for your encouraging words! The Mercury 60 hp four stroke is a great engine, very smooth and quiet. It pushes the boat along at about 30 mph cruise and top speed 36 mph - which is plenty for the hull design. I weighed the boat and trailer a while back and I think it came in around 2,100 lbs so the boat is probably around 1,500+ lbs, I have a lot of accessories on it.
This is a beautiful boat you have built. I am planning on building a ski king and hope to have it look as good as that. For the sides of the boat what did you do? Did you just varnish the plywood or put something else on it to get that color?
Thank you! I stained the plywood before I covered it in fiberglass and epoxy. I also added a little stain to one or two coats of varnish to deepen the color a little. I used water based stain and varnish (System Three Clear Gloss WR-LPU Urethane). WR-LPU is a little tricky to apply but creates a very tough top coat.

I love the idea of inlay between the deck boards instead of caulk. I know caulk is the classic look, but I always thought it looked sloppy. But before epoxy encapsulation, I guess the boards did move a lot with wet/dry cycles. Anyway, you definitely put the idea in my head. I'm a month away from flipping my ZipWhat wood did you use for the inlay?
I used maple for the inlay. I glued the maple strips to one edge of the mahogany before I re-sawed and planed, making it a single strip - see 0:40. Easy to install and has held up well - no separation. Good luck with your Zip - flipping is always a big day!

I'm ashamed to admit I have Glen L plans in my drawer at home since 2009. Plans for the TNT. I have no space to build and no experience at all working with wood but I will one day get around to it. I watch videos like yours every now & then for inspiration. I know a man that has also built the Malahini and the Crackerbox. His name is Fergal Butler. He has some videos on youtube, you should have a look.
I checked out Fergal Butler's videos - very cool! I hope you get to build your TNT soon, I had very little woodworking experience when a built my first boat (Jon boat), I really leaned on TH-cam videos, forums and muddled my way through it!
