  • Back in 1976, Steve Andrews was a follower of Gurdjieff´s teachings and attended Gurdjieff Group meetings in Cardiff, as well as full days at a house in Wincanton where, under the guidance of former pupils of Gurdjieff, George and Dorothy Phillpotts, the Gurdjieff Work was explored further.
In this reel Steve Andrews talks a bit about the books by Gurdjieff: Beelzebub´s Tales to his Grandson - All and Everything, Meetings with Remarkable Men, and Life is Real Only Then, When "I Am."
G.I. Gurdjieff was a Greek-Armenian philosopher and mystic, who after extensive travelling in Asia, the Near East and Egypt, returned to Europe with a system of knowledge he taught his followers.
Steve Andrews mentions that Kate Bush includes the name Gurdjieff in her song "Them Heavy People"
Meetings with Remarkable Men was made into a film.

Why do you have the blue beard faerie tale going on?!!

I have explained this many times but will do so again. The beard is Apple Green according to the label on the dye. I am not sure why it looks blueish in some videos and photos. I guess it is the lighting. I began having a green beard back in 2003 when I was a performer and compere at the Green Man Festival. It proved very popular and does reflect my image because I am a naturalist and environmentalist. It has also opened many doors for me.

This book is definitely challenging if you're not willing to suspend disbelief. The introduction is amusing with its rambling style, but eventually, it gets pretty boring. The anecdote about the man who bought a pack of hot peppers and ate them because he felt "invested" after the purchase was a highlight for me-thinking of him helped sustain me through the tougher parts of the book! I don’t mind metaphysical speculations, but there came a point where Gurdjieff espoused some ideas related to physics that were clearly wrong, all wrapped up in jargon. That’s when I had to set it down. I wouldn’t recommend reading it three times! There are far too many good books out there to read! Good luck in overcoming the Kundabuffer all!

Thanks for your review. Yes, Gurdjieff does write in a humorous way at times. I can't recall the anecdote about the "hot peppers" but haven't read the books for many years. I see that you mention the Kundabuffer organ.

The gist of the anecdote is similar to the old aphorism: ‘in for a penny, in for a pound.’
In Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson, Gurdjieff tells the story of a traveler who buys a bag of peppers without knowing what they are. Despite the intense heat of the peppers, he eats them, much to the amazement of those around him, because he doesn’t want to lose his investment.
Obviously, that’s not always the best aphorism to live by, but I’ve often made that mistake myself, lol ;)

Well I m actually wondering why you ve got that blue beard

    • @bardofely

It is supposed to be green. I dyed it that colour first of all for the Green Man Festival back in 2003. I was a performer and compere. Since then the green beard has proved very popular and has opened doors for me.
