So with this approach you pick up the MOB on the leeward side? Vs. the quick stop approach where you pick up on the windward side?

Picking up your MOB on the windward side makes your drift less dangerous for the manoeuvre (you dont risk going over him). You can also pick him up on the windward side with this method, it doesnt really matter if you stop by him without hurting him (except for an exam). I'd like to add that on this video the boat doesnt stop on the MOB so it would not be accepted if your examinator is a prick. The very good part about the quick stop is that you always stay at voice and sight range, so your MOB wont lose hope. This method is easier to master, and doesnt use the engine, which is a good thing. The choice is yours, but keep in mind the reach in this method only serves the purpose of bringing you downwind of your MOB

@@theophilebachelart1649 If your examinator was concerned about the safety of your crew.
Windward vs. leeward depends on conditions. Here, on an inland lake, we teach to pick up on the windward side because that means the boom and sails and blowing lines will be on the other side. Less chance of another going overboard; less in the way when MOB is on windward. More chance of boat being blown away from the MOB.

is this also considered a figure eight approach?

No. As the name suggests, figure eight involves making figure eight with your boat🤦
