- Basically I started Genocide, then I spared Papyrus, and killed everyone the rest of the game (including all the monsters in an area).

Papyrus has the most painful role in Undertale. He never lets his feelings out, he puts on a happy facade to hide his worst fears, to hide the truth from himself. He *knows* everyone is dead, but he doesn’t *believe* everyone is dead. Papyrus is the ultimate stoic in the game, he internalizes every bad feeling and stays silent even when he’s about to break.
Well you see, he's not hiding his feelings anymore.

I don't really think he "gives a shit" When we only kill toriel, he's super mad.
I think he could forgive most of the others as self defense. Undyne, Mettaton and Asgore were going to kill you, and there was no obvious way around that. Papyrus will always leave you at 1 HP and he's much friendlier than all the others. Sans admires Papyrus and he basically treated your run-ins with Papyrus' traps and puzzles as a harmless game.
As for Toriel, he only knows she wanted you protected. He doesn't know the details. Even she forgives you for killing her.
Imagine if after Sans left Paps told us he knows what we did.

When I first played the game, I couldn’t figure out how to spare most of the characters,
so I just killed pretty much everyone. Except for, for whatever reason, Papyrus. So I got this ending.

NB part of me wonders if Sans actually ever does anything to protect you but yeah you won’t die when fighting him and that’s why your called a dirty brother killer.
This genuinely happened to me my first blind run. I didn’t even realize you could spare most bosses and thought I was being a decently good person.

Man papyrus knows they are dead because In the genocide route once it’s his battle he knows what you’ve done and spares you and still has faith in you even if you kill him. But finally when sans pranks you whenever he gives you keys to his room papyrus says this “is sans pea king you across time and space? I hate when he does that!” Which means papyrus knows of sans’ power

This is just the saddest ending. Papyrus is just trying so hard to be positive and keep things going, but also admits how hard and stressful things are currently for him. Yet, I do kinda believe he knows deep down what Sans is saying is a lie. He looks so stressed and concern in a few parts in his speech. Like he doesn't let onto everything he is feeling, like he knows what he is saying isn't exactly the truth.
Papyrus may know that they friends he cherished may never come back, but his positivity mind set comes back to push those thoughts down. In able to cope with them. Almost borderline toxic positivity to be honest.
Papyrus is my favorite character, but he seems to know more than he lets on too, always to busy with his puzzles or positive belief of others. That's why I adore this cutie.
There are theories that the secret attack that Papyrus mentions during his fight is a Gaster Blaster, if it is true then he 100% knows more than he is letting on.
the fact that papyrus really reads like he's trying to convince himself sans is telling the truth and looks like he's doubting him throughout this hurts my heart. I've never even done a genocide route or attempted to and I feel bad

@@ZeroDimNah, the worst neutral ending is really when murdering every boss monsters because there, nobody would take over the Underground leaving... Everyone just there... Not knowing what to do and just... Thinking they're all going to die.
Even Sans drops his joking self for a moment and even takes it upon himself for exactly that happening, saying "This is what happens when people like me take it easy."
With all other ending, they still have a semblance of hope to getting out but now but now? They literally have no chance.
@@ZeroDimnope, the worst neutral route is the one where you spare mettaton and papyrus and no one else. Mettaton becomes a dictator and basically silences everyone who speaks against him. At least in this route people aren’t getting murdered for criticising a dystopia, papyrus and sans are a pretty good combo when it comes to leading people, papyrus as a figurehead to uplift people and sans as the person who actually does the more grounded stuff.

God, Papy is so smart yet so kind. He knows what's happened, he knows what you've done, but his kindness and empathy won't let him hate you. Even if you can kill him, (which I could, though I didn't get much farther with his death on my conscious) he tries to help you. He admits to fearing you if you spare him... God, Papy truly is amazing.

This might be because he starts to relaise that they might have gotten hurt or died. He wants to calm the human and give them hope with this sentence, because he thinks that the human doesn't know what happened. If Papyrus gets spared in genocide, he will actually say that he was worried about the battle or something like this. But this also proves that Papyrus is not dumb at all, just naive and very optimistic.
Papyrus's faces throughout the latter part of the call make it seem like he knows that they're dead, or at least some of them, but he's trying to convince himself that they're not
i forgot how in-depth this game is.

From a certain moral perspective this route can make a lot of sense. After all, Papyrus never actually tries to kill you. Because of that, there's no need to have murderous intent in response. In turn, all of the others except for Alphys do genuinely try to kill you. And you don't *directly* kill Alphys.
Edit: Toriel never actually tries to kill you either, of course, but that's only learned if you do so poorly she holds back.
So apparently killing everybody but papyrus just turns the underground into what we needed

I got this ending the first time I played the game. I just wanted to kill everything in my path, but even so, I couldn't bring myself to kill papyrus. After I completed that playthrough, I had a change of heart and decided to spare everything instead

Yeeeeeah, but the genocide run is basically just punishing you. It's full of monotonous grinding, the boss fights are either way too easy or WAY too hard. For the most part, the music sucks and there's nobody to really talk to. Plus, it ruins every other playthrough of the game

the fact that papyrus is still optimistic just hits me plus the fact that he doesn't even know that his friends are dead
Everytime Papyrus talks in the neutral endings, it hits the hardest. Even worse than Sans telling you to go to hell, or Alphys saying she should’ve killed you. He’s so naive. He thinks that you’re a good person, no matter what you do, he just wants to believe in you. He knows you killed everyone. He knows they’re all dead. But he pretends everything’s fine. He hopes that Sans is telling him the truth, that everyone is wrong about you, that his gut is wrong about you. It’s so hard to read.

I don’t know what I thought the worst possible ending was before this, but this is by far the saddest ending in the game.

I killed everyone except some of the normal monsters cause I missed them And Sans said “Heya is anyone there, well I’ll just leave a message. ( I can’t remember exactly what Sans said ) Monsters have disappeared along with the king. Why am I not taking over? I’m not fit for the job. At least there’s more space because of the monsters you killed. I hope you’re happy. Just kidding. B u r n i n h e l l.”
What's even sadder is that its speculated that after killing undyne or mettaton alphys commits suicide which makes this ending even more sad now that a character that you didn't kill killed herself because of you.
The saddest ending is the genocide ending because you have to kill sans
Despite only being 6 hours long, I got quite addicted to this at one point. I just wanted so badly to see all the ever-so-slightly different endings depending on who I killed and who I saved

My first playthrough was blind so I killed most the enemies either by accident or for xp. Papyrus "spared" me so he was the only boss that lived, aside from Muffet because I donated to spider charity. The Papyrus ending was really bitter sweet. This game is great.
Same! I tried to get most of the bosses' HP really low and then spare them, but I couldn't do it with Toriel, Undyne or Asgore. They just died. So I got this ending.
Papyrus seems to keep Sans sane, no matter how many of the others you kill. Killing Papyrus but not going full genocide results in Sans not fighting you, but being extremely pissed at you.

Papyrus doesn't deserve his friends to go missing, he's just genuinely a good skeleton. It's just sad to see all his friends are gone, and he thinks they're on vacation. Even though undyne hasn't answered his phone calls, he hasn't given up.

This one is the worst ending. It doesn’t matter that I haven’t killed everyone, just hearing those lines from papyrus makes me feel awful for the guy.

I can relate to this because on my first play through I killed everyone but papyrus. But since I was new I didn’t know you had to grind encounters, so it would not have been a genocide route anyway.
Papyrus becoming ruler is probably more than what he dreamed. Im proud of him.
I hate the fact that sans lied to papyrus so that he wouldn’t be upset.

Can everyone take a moment to think about how Sans is actually working HARD!?!
He has to make sure everything works out for his brother. If he slacks off now, chaos could happen. He has to work hard, especially on the things he doesnt want his brother to worry about. Like dealing with the terrible humans that fall down there, or coming up with solutions to depressing issues the monsters would be having. Papyrus is kind, but definitely isn't suited for solving such large problems by himself. Sans, on the other hand, is obviously intelligent and very self reliant. He can bare the shit and come up with ways to help out.

I like how papyrus is managing to keep the underground mostly stable and sans is actually being a productive member of society, even if we killed most of them, papyrus seems like he would make for a good leader in such a dark time, even if he does think that undyne and the rest of the guys all went on a vacation

I think this is really interesting, what must be going through his thoughts where only a handful of his friends survive because they evacuated, as well as leaving one of the most important people to him left willingly spared. Its like hes saying "you are disgusting, but i'll thank you for at least sparing my brother". -
