I've seen the Laughing Cavalier in person once, quite by accident and I've been in love with it ever since. It's such a treat to gather some of his best works in one exhibition. From his brushstrokes and dynamic poses in his portraits they emanate a great sense of joie de vivre and the energy is infectious.

Franz Hal’s is one of the greatest with Rubens , Van Dyck or Rembrandt but strangely not so popular. He really deserves a exhibition of his own.

An amazing curatorial effort to gather together so many pieces for the first time in a generation!

An extraordinarily gifted artist, Frans Hals portraits are so spontaneous and full of life unlike works of his fellow artists of that time!! Hats off to The National Gallery for arranging such a wonderful exhibition of this very great Dutch artist!!🫡🫡👏👏🥰🥰❤❤

So.... realising it was silver plated, and not brass as it initially appeared, out came the silver polish, and now I'm looking at a glittering, well patinad tribute of celebration, to a man renown for painting celebratory paintings, that is so cool.

I thought the Hals exhibition exhibition at the Wallace collection last year was better - more focus and intensity of subject matter

"A tronie is a type of work common in Dutch Golden Age painting and Flemish Baroque painting that depicts an exaggerated or characteristic facial expression. These works were not intended as portraits or caricatures but as studies of expression, type, physiognomy or an interesting character "

Eventually, after lots of lion handles, I found identical lions, on an, armorial, french planter, described as being from around mid 1800's. It also had the same gadrooned rim as the bucket has.

Interesting: the 'Laughing Cavalier's' smile, does not extend to his eyes--a measure of Hals' skill.

Remarquable. Ce qui est un peu bizarre c'est qu'un tableau du 17eme me parle naturellement. C'est à la fois formidable et un peu triste.

The clothing they used to wear looks so uncomfortable, its like they were trying to imbue a peacock or some kind of turkey or game bird............
