Finally someone shows people with disabilities on their videos. Thank you so much. I also am disabled although I'm not confined to a wheelchair, I do have trouble getting around, and it's so refreshing to see that yes even though I may be disabled I still am alive and want to experience this beautiful world of ours. Thanks so much for including your wonderful friends and also thanks to your tour guide for having accommodations for wheelchairs.
You're welcome! My friend Byron is one of the most incredible human beings. He's a Paralympian and a world traveler. He doesn't let anything stop him from living life to the fullest, and his wife (the girl in the video) is always by his side supporting him. I also really appreciate Sam's effort to find that accessible tuk tuk, which wasn't easy to come by. Thank you for your heart felt message and I hope you get to see so many beautiful places in the world!
I am Cambodian and was very excited to see that you visited my country! I took a trip with my parents a few years ago (I immigrated to the US at a young age and I was born in the Thailand refugee camp). It was a very humbling experience to see my country and I felt the heartache my parents felt during the Pol Pot regime. Thanks for the video and a little taste of home!
Thank you for this. As a Khmer in the US and trying to explain the difference between Khmer food and Thai food, both you and the chef explained the subtleties perfectly. I'm so happy you enjoyed your trip. Keep up the good work!
Hello Pai, Lovely video and review of a few local Cambodian restaurants in Siem Reap. Since this video was filmed back in 2018, where is Sam Khmer noodles located in Siem reap? Thank you, Lenny
When the energy is right, you’ll be in the company of great people. How cool to meet your guide early on. Everything looks sooooo delicious. I want it all!
I was excited to see you had traveled to Siem Reap... 3 years ago I landed there expecting to stay 2 weeks, then continue on to Vietnam...I liked the area and people so much I extended my visa and stayed 6 weeks...I retire at the end of this year and will use Siem Reap as my home base as I explore SE Asia... Bought your book and just starting read through it....thanks for the video.....
Everything looks absolutely delicious! This is just a glimpse into this amazing cuisine! Pai, you’ve done a wonderful job at showcasing Cambodian food!
I'm happy to see u in Cambodia. I've not been back home since 2000. I followed you cuz Thai food and Cambodia food used same herbs and spices. Your cooking easy to understand and simple. I want to try this restaurant next visit

This is the second time we've been in the same place and just missed each other. First in Dubai and then in Siem Reap! Love your episodes. Hope we connect somewhere in the world!
Wooww!! What an amazing trip in Cambodia!! I like the the baked pumpkin custard so much!! It is one of my favourite dessert!! Taste so sweet and delicious dessert!!! Thats awesome!! Enjoy your trip and see U anytime!! Happy Chinese New Year to U too!! 恭喜发财!! 万事如意!!
The part of India I come from, has a similar dish where we cook marinated shrimp or lobster stuffed inside a young coconut, mixed with all its flesh and juices ... yum !
I appreciate your traveling destination to came to my beloved country to try our national food that had the connection between your Thai food since the first started of your country... (Sorry for talking about the history) But I’m excited to you in my country. And I’m also ur fan too.
Hello Pad Thai su wa dee ka! My dad is Cambodian but he thai speaker and also has Thai citizenship. Him and I loves Thai food. We are Cambodian but we both really really love thai food!
So excited to see you in Siem Reap, the place that I love and have been there for 5 times. I have tasted Nom Ban Chok and Amok and found that they were delicious in the way of lighter spiciness than we have in Thailand. You may try Banh Chaew(ขนมเบื้อง), my favourite dish as it easy to eat and flavorful. Last time I went there was last year and I was surprised that I had found Thai dishes in Cambodian Restaurant's menu such as Pad Kaprao, Som Tam, Tom Yam. I had tasted them and they were almost the same we have in Thailand. Do not miss to try "Sawasdee" Thai restaurant by Thai owner. The real Thai tastes are waiting there for you Pai.
You’re beautiful, smart and amazing woman. Thanks for visiting my country. I’m Khmer migrated to US now residing in the Philippines now. I’m trying to introduce some Cambodian food here.
The only Cambodian restaurant I know of in Vancouver is Phnom Penh - my sister in law is from Cambodia and worked in the back of that place in the 90's making the salad rolls!
Great video! I went to Cambodia last year and *loved* the food. I've been trying to find a good recipe for fish amok - maybe that could be a new recipe on Pai's Kitchen! :D
Good Amok Trei recipes are hard to find. My recipe is an old printed version and its great but I cannot see it on the internet, otherwise I would have been able to send you the link. oh well.
I’m so happy you went to Cambodia! My favorite is the fish and tamarind sauce. My mom makes it spicy and id think you’d like that! My whole family eats amok, but I’m the only one who doesn’t like it lol I wish I did! There’s so much other Khmer food you should try like Prahok Ktiss and Kathew which is like Pho but broth is different.
I beg to differ regarding the similarity and differences of Khmer & Thai food. I'm Cambodian and I am familiar with Khmer and Thai food. I found that Cambodian flavors are more bolder than Thai, but not as bold as Indian food. I feel like Thai flavors are lighter than Cambodian food (which I enjoy both cuisines). Our cooking flavor are more balanced but I totally disagree with him saying khmer food flavors are lighter. Of course the food that you tried are maybe focus for foreigners taste (and its usually lighter than usual), but if you wanted to try Real Khmer flavors, I think its probably best to stay away from the "popular tourism restaurants" (maybe try local street food, in the rural, etc.). Even in San Francisco Bay Area (where I'm from), there's a couple of Cambodian restaurant (and yes, my mom was a former chef at one of these restaurant in the bay area). Yet, the flavors at these restaurants are a bit lighter than home cooking. This is just my opinions/thoughts.
Cherries01 I agree. Cambodian food is well balanced and bold with many variety of dishes. We don’t just focus on the rice dishes or the noodle dishes. All are being appreciated in our culture. The restaurants in the touristy areas may not reflect the traditional Khmer cuisine in the flavors dept as much as a non touristy areas. Home cooked meals are more true to its flavor IMO. I would love to see Khmer food as part of the mainstream food attraction. Khmer cuisine is so underrated by Westerners when it should be celebrated like any other cuisines around the world.
I thought the owner was going to say Khmer food is lighter in spiciness. Khmer food is bolder in flavor than Thai, except when it comes to heat. A lot of the Thai food that I have eaten taste pretty much the same, especially the noodle dishes. And I agree, restaurants in touristy areas cater to well, tourists. I much preferred my aunt's home cooking much more than any of the restaurants I went to when I visited Cambodia. Like, I thought this somlaw machu trakuon was supposed to be, you know, chu?
ohShnapss I agree with you on the spiciness, khmer cuisine is not too spicy, but can always add chili on the side, to their liking. But our flavors are more bolder than Thai. I like Thai food because of their light, yet simplicity flavor. Some Khmer food is too overwhelming for me, especially those with the lemongrass kroeung... not sure why I’m not fond of it. In this video, she tasted the nombanh jok and I think she said it was light in flavor... to me, the flavor looks dilute (cater to foreign of course) well the authentic cooking for this dish, u would taste the bold lemongrass paste along with the prohok lol. Lol somlar machu torkoun is a bit sour/tangy, but not too sour to the point you would have diarrhea. Haha. Great, now I’m craving for somlar Machu kroeung with pork rib and trokoun. Haha. I’m not totally impress with this video if it’s about Khmer food. I think Mark Wien (sp?) went down and tasted the authentic Khmer food.
Cherries01 I’m a mainland Khmer, and I actually agree with what the chef stated in the video. There are inherently Cambodian gastronomical delights that may make our cuisine seem like it’s really bold (such as prahok) but overall on a general scale our cuisine is more subtle than Thai cuisine. However, this does not mean Cambodian cuisine is not delicious. The majority of the dishes consumed on a daily bases throughout Cambodia are generally less bold than our Thai neighbours. Even if you ask local people in Cambodia what their thoughts of Thai food are they will almost always say in comparison to Cambodian food, the flavours of Thai cuisine are more dominant whether it be sweet, salty, sour, or spicy. Take for example curries between both countries. The most known curry dish throughout Cambodia is our Samlor Curry depicted in the video. However Thailand has endless amounts of curry dishes that have very strong flavours, i.e Green curry, Yellow Curry, Gaeng Som (sour curry), Massaman Curry, Panang Curry, the list goes on, and each of these curries have unique flavours that give them a unique character. I think the main thing to point out and appreciate is that although generally Cambodian cuisine may be more subtle in comparison to Thai food, it does not take away from the fact that it is delicious!! Subtle does not equate weak taste, as was the point that was brought across in the video.
That is odd. I have four trips to Thailand under my belt, one 3-week-stint in Cambodia. My impression was, that khmer food was much more bland, not only in taste, but also color and general appearance/ preparation than thai food. Also, but not only, it is far less spicy, but then spicyness differs greatly in Thailand.
Great video, I've never been to Cambodia , buy must put it on the bucket list, glad to see you get some pay back on those red ants !! Thank you for taking the time on your trip to share your adventures !!
Hey I'm so surprised that I didn't know you have made the video tour to siem reap with my friend Sam. I have been subscribe to your channel years a go.
Great video! Cambodia is really a fantastic country. BTW, I'm a tour Guide in Rio de Janeiro, so if Adam and Yourself are willing, I can give you a tour! As a fan, it would be an honor to guide Hot Thai Kitchen.

Pailin, I d k if you know this. There is a province around the Thai border to Cambodia and we called them Pailin province. It used to be known for its gems and diamonds pre war period and a lot of ethnic Shan (Burmese minority) live there.
We don't use whole rice grains as breading in our Taiwanese household either, but we do use them as an outer "coating" for steamed pork meatballs with sticky rice ^_^
