Junkyard Turbo Hemi HP-Long Tubes & Turbo

  • We ran a cheap, junkyard 5.7L Hemi Ram motor with an S475 Turbo. The junkyard motor was modified with increased ring gap, a Comp stage 4 HRT cam and spring upgrade. We dyno tested the motor NA then after installation of the S475 turbo from Summit Racing. The turbo was combined with aPprocharger ATW intercooler and 80-ppound injectors. The tailgate turbo kit was constructed using Hooker 1 7/8-inch, long-tube headers feeding a custom Y pipe. We ran the motor at boost levels ranging from 5.3 psi to 12.0 psi using an electronic waste gate controller.

I like the longer videos, but as someone else mentioned, 10 to 15 minutes is ideal. Also, when talking in a echoey room like the Dyno cell, a lapel mic would be highly beneficial to the listening audience.

I enjoyed this format a lot. speeding up thru the obvious and clearly explaining the technical stuff is perfect. Following thru with quick rundowns after installs was great. Mentioning the products used is appreciated. Just enough humor to entertain but not annoy. If i was forced to suggest one thing it would be to mic up when youre farther away from camera for consistent volume for us viewers. This is better than Engine Masters imo.

First of all, I love the content. It’s amazing stuff.
Second, I love that you’re actually paying attention to the people who watch it. That’s super huge.
Third, I think most of the people are spot on with the comments. Level out the audio, and we love the additional length and information. 30 minutes may be a bit long, but I still like it.
Again, I’m a huge fan, and I love your work. As a back yard mechanic and fabricator, I get inspired with all of your videos.

I'm a big fan of yours Richard from the print days when you'd put out the most thorough engine parts/build testing on the planet. Glad to see you here on the tube. My preferences? Keep the videos in the 15 minute range, give or take. If you need to have multiple episodes for a project, fine, but that's the right size for easy viewing IMO. Work on the audio a bit, polish the editing and just keep doing you.

Dude tbh the long knowledgeable videos are the way to go best engine dyno video I’ve ever seen , very descriptive and at that I have a 5.7 hemi Charger it’s fast an all but I need more power and this is a really good video. But when you say junkyard hemi that’s completely stock bottom end making over 650hp ?? Amazed !! I’ve read they can only handle 500hp but you actually tested it with a turbo and proved me wrong. Keep up the good videos bro !

The sweet spot for TH-cam videos seems to be in the 15 - 30 min range. Your usual videos always seem a little ahort and I have to pause and rewind to examine the cam specs or dyno graphs. This video was probably too long for a regular release but there was sooo much good stuff in it. :) My only (minor) gripe about this video is the sound quality in the early dyno cell shots. It was great getting to see you start up the dyno. In all the hours of Engine Masters vids I've watched I always wondered how that was done. It was also great getting to hear your tuning philosophy ( back off the timing, tune to the AFR then add in timing). Have a great holiday/new year!

I think the short videos are what got me familiar with you and are nice when time is limited. Now that I’ve watched many of your videos, I like to the long format when time allows. I think having both is best for helping out the enthusiast community both directly with content and not overwhelming the newbies. I daily a 418 LS, 6L80 Bronco on 37s and built a sloppy based mostly stock Sierra with turbo, injectors, and valve springs.
I’ve had some ups and downs in life that limited me to just watching videos. I planned both my builds while limited on what I could do and watching too many TH-cam videos and too much time on forums. Your short videos full of data on what makes power greatly influenced my builds and many I came back to several times. I hope you continue the videos for other common engines to improve builds for years to come.

I liked the length and some of the additional detail (and humor) that probably hits the cutting room floor in most of your videos. Maybe a touch long, I'd target 15-20 minutes. And more hemi stuff! There's tons of LS cam swap dyno videos, many of which are done by you, but there's very little "add a cam/head swap/intake mani/etc., here's the dyno" for hemi motors. LOTS of Charger/Challenger/Magnum/300/Ram/Durango 5.7s that are hitting that 5-15 year old sweet spot of modifying the engines.

Heres a test i would like to see. Take that system you have now and measure how long it is from end of header to entry on turbo. Add that length to the pressure side and lose the intercooler. Simulating a rear mount turbo. Measure how long it takes from low rpm to climb to full boost and power. Now run test again with a system simulating a underhood turbo install. I ask as a rear mount using readily available stuff would seem waaaaay cheaper for me to fabricate. And i have plenty of wasted space down back.

Thanks for showing us 5.7 some love and giving us hope on not having to feel bad about buying a hellcat. This set up alone will beat me bone stock hellcat because they are at 650 when they are dyno stocked bone

I like the long version. I'm a little Geeky though 😁 Would have liked to see, more timing, peoper air/fuel tune. Maximizing the tune. Alcohol injection to see how much it adds, would be cool too

I like the longer format. I think it would be nice it it was kinda in between the shorter videos and this. The shorter vids that you have up seem a little too rushed.

For format, I myself dont need to see you installing the parts. A comparison of parts or just quickly showing before install would be great. Pretty sure most guys watching this know how to turn a wrench.
I do love these videos though, the 4.8 ls header manifold comparison was dynamite. Stock manifold flowed till 7000rpm!!!!
