For me, what he's breaking out of isn't so much his fame or shell as it is breaking free from the constraints of genre, and the symbolic key for me is his relative position to the truck (kpop and his idol status) throughout the video. At first, because of how the underground rap scene looked down on him, kpop was like a trap, a cage, a vehicle that he can't control or get out of. Remember, he genuinely didn't like the idea of being a kpop idol but was just kind of taken along for the ride despite his misgivings. Now he's decided that he's going to be the one in control (he always maintains creative integrity, makes connections with other artists and works with them, does what feels right to him) and he cuts himself free (but still *stays on* the truck) and suddenly it's not a cage anymore. By the end of the video, not only has he broken free but he's riding ON TOP of the truck. He's still a kpop idol, but now he's literally and figuratively at the top and the genre isn't a cage anymore, it's a vehicle that he's choosing to stay on.
It is easy to see Suga as vulnerable because of how open he is but I think that actually, he’s practically the opposite of vulnerable because the things he chooses to share are things he has fought his whole life and mostly conquered. Probably the best example of his mentality is that when BTS debuted, he decided he wasn’t going to cry in front of the other members until they won a daesang (grand prize) or performed in a stadium, until then he was going to be their support. Part of this “toughness” is how he’s incredibly blunt when it comes to facts or to putting down people chatting shit or being savage. Growing up, the love he got was, as far as he’s said, much more of the doing sort than the showing/saying sort and I think that and growing up very poor with your whole identity in music and specifically in rap, is kind of what gave him this side of his personality. Our Suga is very multi-faceted, though, and can be the fluffiest little thing alive sometimes. What would be really interesting is if you checked out their cyphers, they really show BTS’s evolution as rappers.

Keep in mind that even though the vibe of Mono is more mature and introspective, RM's FIRST mixtape was closer, or more similar, to what the Agust D mixtape is like. But now, as they've gone through more stuff; personally, and in their careers, their music styles has evolved. I would love to hear your thoughts on suga’s the last. There is no MV attached to it, but the fact that you said the hard hitting rapper seemed out of sorts with the man who has been presented to you as a more vulnerable person? The last will marry the two for you. For some more mellow things from suga, I would go for some of the BTS fare, or collabs. Even though he leans towards the angry rap style of the nineties, he really can turn chameleon to suit any style, so his collabs are really an interesting mix

The video they watched seemed slowed down or altered somehow, the real song is much faster I think you guys might have watched the wrong video or messed with the speed somehow. Definitely would recommend rewatching so you can see how fast he actually raps and how amazing it sounds cause it's way better than how it sounds in this video.
