I mean your concern is totally valid and we all hope that things can reopen as soon as possible, but if 20 percent of patients need hospitalization and some kind of oxygen support, and the hospitals are full, then a huge death rate is unfortunately coming. Hopefully ventilators and ppe can be manufactured here to keep the healthcare system from totally failing for people who need it most. If we get to the point where the curve in a region under lockdown has peaked, and assertively come far enough down to make lifting the lockdown *relatively* safe... If we then open up interstate travel again too soon, before having more general, far more effective treatments and rapid widespread testing - there's gonna be an huge spike in inrush travel. And commuting. There's a HUGE risk that this could then bring in rapid recontamination, but with a strain of the virus far enough along in mutation that the local/regional population' "immunity" do not respond to it. If this spike in travel is between two (or more) regions that has gone through the same process, that scenario will likely play out in *both* areas. And the whole sh*tfest starts all over again. By all this i don't mean we need to lock down interstate (or international) travel and have *_very_* strict decontamination regimes for transport of goods, forever. Or until we have some ideal catch-all vaccines deployed among the entire population (that _can_ be vaccinated). But we're gonna have to have this restrictiona in place, at least until we have far more *_effective treatment_*_ and rapid testing_ available - that have shown to work reliably in a large variety of areas, to make sure it works for most strains.

This (interstate travel lockdown) is gonna be ultra critical if we are to get the varous parts of the country back online, as soon as possible *_when and where the local conditions makes that safe._* Because you can only manage this kind of thing, in and with the herd you know and "control."
We might _hopefully_ develop antibodies and effectively an immunity against this, for those who've had it and kicked it. But from the data the world already has, and the knowledge base we have from other strains of corona type viruses, we know they mutate like crazy as they are do contageous and spread so easily to billions of people i relatively short order.
The United States is a vast and populous place. And some regions have very sparse population between them, geographically (and some times in terms of travel). If we get to the point where the curve in a region under lockdown has peaked, and assertively come far enough down to make lifting the lockdown *relatively* safe... If we then open up interstate travel again too soon, before having more general, far more effective treatments and rapid widespread testing - there's gonna be an huge spike in inrush travel. And commuting. There's a HUGE risk that this could then bring in rapid recontamination, but with a strain of the virus far enough along in mutation that the local/regional population' "immunity" do not respond to it. If this spike in travel is between two (or more) regions that has gone through the same process, that scenario will likely play out in *both* areas. And the whole sh*tfest starts all over again.
By all this i don't mean we need to lock down interstate (or international) travel and have *_very_* strict decontamination regimes for transport of goods, forever. Or until we have some ideal catch-all vaccines deployed among the entire population (that _can_ be vaccinated). But we're gonna have to have this restrictiona in place, at least until we have far more *_effective treatment_*_ and rapid testing_ available - that have shown to work reliably in a large variety of areas, to make sure it works for most strains.

We would not expect to see it so soon, im not completely sure of the details, but we are still in the growing phase and right now social distancing is good to contain that, because otherwise that acceleration would be even bigger, the measures need time take effect, i guess 2-3 weeks more before the curve turning? but the virus has some different behaviours, but you can follow the numbers everywhere in the world on WHO's site.
