  • Completion of a project. Two 24" x 26" boards (pegboard) filled with 818 blue LEDs, 160 IR emitters, and 190 IR receivers. All organized into 190 "nodes" and powered by two Arduino micro-controllers. I built the coffee table and sized the inner cabinet to accommodate these pegboard reactive surfaces.
    The two pieces of pegboard (as well as a good view of the wire "nest" beneath them) can be seen being tested here: • Arduino IR Reactive LE...

    This link also contains a vast amount of information such as motivation, similar projects by others, and more on components used.
    Camera is a bit old, and low quality. Also, the IR doesn't show up on the camera (IR is invisible to the naked eye, but digital cameras tend to pick it up). Another video was taken with a newer camera, but the IR is more visible on this one: • Reactive LED Coffee Ta...

    This table arrived well packaged and on time. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!

    Dang.. I watched the build video, and it looked like a beast building this.. but mannnnnn is that cool. I have never seen anything like that before. 50 hours is a long time, but now that I have seen the finished product.. totally worth it. Now you just need to paint that coffee table to match its updated technology. Sooooo cool.

      The TLC5940 made the outputs (essentially) infinitely chainable, and the MUX's allowed me to expand the inputs from 6 to (16 x 6 = ) 96. Otherwise... you're absolutely right. This project wouldve been much too large for a single Arduino.

    I am curious though - why didn't you multiplex the table in an x/y array? It'd result in far less wires (1 per row of leds, 1 per column of LEDs, plus a 2nd set for the IR receivers).

To be clear though, most of the actual learning how to do it occurred in engineering school.

    just an aesthetic question would you still be able to defuse the light in any manner? that wouldn't interupt the IR sensors ?

  • @neousagi
    @neousagi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mighty cool stuff! Next thing you might consider is have the IR sensors report temperature, install RGB LEDs instead of blue and have them light up and colored according to temp. :)

    • @aerobyrdable
      @aerobyrdable 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +neousagi This kind of IR sensor does not detect temperature. You could theoretically make it sense the temperature of the room, then light up different colors based on this, but at the end of the day, the electronics involved become an order of magnitude more complex and given that you're inside, this would be rather silly, since the temperature of the room stays the same.

    • @neousagi
      @neousagi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ryan Cook Ah... too bad. This sort of think could have had safety applications, where the surface was colored according to the temp of what was on top of it. It would be useful in the kitchen and workshops where high temp items were used.

    • @aerobyrdable
      @aerobyrdable 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      neousagi one thing they do have is, for instance, on my stove, there is a little warning light which comes on when the electric stovetop is hot, if that's what you mean. By the way, I may have slightly misspoken before, it has occurred to me there may be a way to do what you meant. It would involve measuring the temp of the tabletop, not by infrared, but by temperature sensors like the lm35 or perhaps a little thermistor. Mind you, this is still likely to be a more complex, and significantly more expensive endeavor.

  • @MrFlashgrenade

    • @flyingace15

      it wouldnt work then since the IR receiver is picking up a signal of reflected light from the IR emitter off of the objects up above. if the glass was frosted it would be on all the time.

  • @BuckleupMinecraft

    • @benammiswift
      @benammiswift 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Neil Caulfield I used misted acrylic on a project that I did with the IR sensor behind the misted acrylic and the IR still works fine so that should be possible

  • @sephoratrading
    @sephoratrading 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will the IR sensors detect clear items such as glass? Or in the case of a drink glass, could an uneven bottom be enough to set off the sensors? I noticed you had coasters under your glasses in this video.

  • @FlyingCircles
    @FlyingCircles 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It might look a bit more polishehed if you were to add a layer of wax paper between the LEDs and the glass, or brush the underside of the glass itself (This would help diffuse the LEDs and look a bit less ..."exposed"). I'm considering doing a project like this of my own, though using another technique.

    I'd tint the glass in black. Infrared light should have no troubles going through. Though it's a bit odd that it detects plastic plate or journal, since it doesn't emit any heat.

    • @yohash84
      @yohash84  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A black tinted glass pane would rule. It would make the light source more mysterious. Actually, the reason it cold-objects is because it doesnt so much pick up on heat, but relies on reflected IR signals. The white dot grid is actually infrared LEDs. The detectors in each blue-LED node are just detecting the emitted light that reflects. They both are sensitive to the same wavelength (roughly).
      Funny thing, the table doesnt reflect off my wallet, which is a matte black. Black is a good absorber and the rough surface of the wallet minimize reflections.
