  • We decide to caulk our self built shed after it is primed and before we paint it. Every single batten. We also strike a very unusual friendship of an overly friendly rat snake. Jon handles a few snakes for the first time. Life on the homestead in southwest Virginia as owner builders.

I love rat snakes (well all snakes really)! They are wonderful to have around. Advice that a lot of people don't know: Snakes live in a territory and should not be moved more than 1.5 miles from where they are found. Moving them more than that will result in death or diseases being spread. As for people who say they should be killed, NO snake should be killed. They are extremely important to the ecosystem. King snakes for example, they eat other snakes (including copperheads). Also, when you come across a hognose snake, don't be afraid of them. They are dramatic little things (nicknamed drama noodles) but are wonderful to have around.

Hi Cat! I agree with your view on snakes. They're beautiful elusive creatures that want nothing to do with us. The only reason I moved that one was because of the size of my dogs and the fact it seemed to approach them with interest (maybe sizing them up). He's about a mile down the road now hopefully doing well. There's a much bigger creek there that will hopefully host some yummy treats for him. 🐍

I would much rather live with rat snakes than coppers. They are mean! They don’t give any warning before they bite like rattlesnakes. Those rat snakes will get HUGE. I will kill copperheads, sorry! Especially if they are near where kids play or around your house. But, you won’t have a mouse or rat problem.

One of the best purchases I've ever made for myself was a (Ryobi) battery powered caulking gun. Saved me so much time (and aggravation).

That rat snake was cracking me up! 😂😂😂😂😂 It’s been over a year now and I bet that rat snake is huge! He’ll show back up at your house looking for mice.

Put some B12 and B15 fertilizer on those trees and some blood meal and it will do wonders for them. They just need some vitamins and minerals while they adapt to the soil is all.

there is one advantage that silicone has over caulk and that is that all references to it are unambiguously rated G. 😊

No snakes for me. I know their a part of the ecosystem . We get along just fine as long as our paths don't cross. The new building looks great. Love the Cupola and the Pergola. It really adds Character.

Thanks, Dean. Nice to hear from you. That's what I teach my kids. Leave them alone and they'll leave you alone. They mean no harm. This was more of a personal goal of handling a snake. I've always kept my distance, but a small part of me always wanted to pick one up. Painting the shed this week. It's all coming together nicely.

You should have disabled the snakes GPS.

Well, I've been silently following along and binge watching your videos to catch up. Since I didn't see any other comments about it, I thought I'd chime in and let ya know... that alligator tape is also used in furniture factories to hold on bandages when the staples "miss the wood". Loving the videos and hope to be doing this soon myself.

Jus sayin I am pretty sure I was sub 704 a week ago. Almost to 1000!!! Just caught up binged the whole library. Lots of questions you answered along the way. Great job, family, and property. Loving the history Meg, the moth to the flame, uncovers and researches.

Thank you, Adam! Nice of you to comment and pat us on the back. I love hearing from people when they just finished binging all the episodes. I take it as a BIG compliment. There are a lot of things on the property we find when they are unearthed. We'll be sure to keep sharing stuff like that.

LOVE, love, love your treatment and respect for these wonderful snakes. I wanted to hold that large one myself! They are here for reasons that we will never totally understand but they are important and beautiful creatures. This I know.

Hi you know that snake. well with the rocks youre stacking around youre shed you will have more of them. Rock piles are snake gatherings spots. It retains heat and snakes being cold blooded are attracted by heat.

Hi A D! There are soo many rock outcroppings near the camper. We're inevitably going to see snakes and there's not much we can do about that. I see your point though, but I don't see them as any harm. They're not out to get you. If anything, they'll keep the mice out of the shed. I actually like seeing them and I use it as education for the kids.

Looks like the hay was just cut across the road from yall. I have seen a couple snakes since the first cutting of hay started, but I've never seen one that persistent ! The shed looks awesome. We sure miss having yall at the campground this summer. Linda and I love watching your videos and so does pawpaw.

Hi Colin! We miss you guys too! We have to get the kids there one day this summer to run around and follow Linda around. Haha! I didn't think about the hay prompting all the snake activity, but you're probably right. I would have just left the big fella alone if he left us alone, but I was about to filing a restraining order. He's probably happy near the bigger creek now anyways. Oh, I cut up the cedar a few weeks ago. I have some nice 1 inchers stacked in the barn drying. Let Linda know. I'll bring them by in the next couple weeks.👍

I am not a snake expert, but - saw something on youtube the other day that said snakes smell their way back to where they were. Advice was that they become a problem, so kill them!

    • @colinmaidens528
      @colinmaidens528 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think that snake meant any harm, maybe it just liked the company. Sure didn't seem to care much for the truck ride though ! Looks like it has a good place to call home now. At any rate, it may not be a bad idea to put some mothballs around the camper just in case.

He was right to relocate the snake with the dogs alerting. The only snakes you should dispatch are vipers. The eyes are correctly identified that it was not venomous. Dogs will be fine now that they have alerted. You will know your dogs bark. Arizona King snakes are predators to rattlers and my experience confirms this. Jon was 100% correct.
