  • Winston's Air 2 is an all-around rod that you can rely on for a wide range of freshwater angling.

    One of the few rods that can truly do it all, the Air 2 is at home whether you’re delicately landing spinners on a flat pool, high sticking your way through every pocket you can find, or stripping streamers out of a boat. Coming in 8’6” and 9’ models that range from 3 through 6 weights, the Air 2 series allows you to choose just the right tool for the water at hand, and its fast action design with a “lighter than air feel” provides ease of casting, accuracy, and finesse that just puts a smile on your face. A high-quality fly rod with no limits, you can rely on Winston’s Air 2 whether it’s a trip to New Zealand that’s been on the books for years or just working the water on your local trout stream.

    At some point in time you'll need to accept that the age of fast action trout rods is fading and stop judging rods by your ability to fling a fly 60+ feet. There's a joy to casting a rod that doesn't require we blow our arm apart that seems to elude your testing.

    This rod is fantastic for dries, tripple nymphs with indicators and fairly big sculpin streamers (meat whistle) with versi leaders. It is a true do it all rod. He needs to have reviews of on water action. I also own the 5 weight these reviews are a little biased. I'll take a winston over a scott any day. And I'm born and raised in Colorado

      Always wanted a Winston but bought a sagex and orvis Helios 3d instead simply because most ppl said it was more for dry flies . I love in CO as well. Tight lines my man

      @@tehspinstee absolutely not only for dry flies, it is a winston so you do need to slow down your casting, its definitely not as fast as a sage but it's much faster than the winston pure which is their dry fly rod.

      I fish the Air2 in 4 and 6 wt here in New Zealand
      I do mostly sight fishing and have to say it is super accurate and manage bigger fish no problem
      On dry and weighted nymphs
      Even split shot.
      Best Winston I ever fished 10 out of 10🤙

    Ben, you're back, your rod reviews are always my favorite. At $1,095, it's almost 30% more expensive than the Sky G (I picked up one from your shop a few months back), which would have made this rod a pass for me based on cost. I couldn't be more pleased with my Sky G!

    Ben, I appreciate your reviews, but I think you are doing yourself and customers a disservice by testing this rod with the wrong line. The 905 Air 2 is not a 5 1/2 weight rod, it's a 5.0 or true weight rod. So why use 5.5 MPX when you already know it will make the rod sloppy out past 45' and you will have to give a bad review. You put your self in a position where you cannot give the rod a fair review and have to give a bad review, so of course your shop sells fewer rods. I'd suggest doing it again with Rio Elite Tech Trout or SA Amp Trout Smooth. Also, MPX is for really for newer guys or people that fish the fast rods, which really, aren't even 5 weights anymore. Even fat headed Gold and big bellied Energy are far from true weight, and would fish far better on this rod than MPX.

      I feel that the entire fly fishing community needs to demand true weight lines that match true weight rods, or else where will all this end up? Calling a rod a true weight rod is actually a badge of honour.

      @barry4fish19 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree too. My Air 1 is being fished one full line weight less than rated because I want the higher line speed, and I tested the Air 2, same thing, take that 5 weight and fish a 4 line. On many of these moderate rods (including the Scott G, and lots of glass rods), if folks want better casting in close with a line that has more weight in front (Gold, MPX, etc), go one line lighter. For examples, my Sage Trout LL in the 8 1/2’ 5 weight just sings with a 4 wt MPX, and my brown Fenwick glass rods are awesome with a Gold at one size lighter. Give it a try, you will be amazed.

    allright ben what is the best alround rod for trout fishing in maine and new england. I watch all your video's and have been to the shop!! thanks

      I'd say it's the angler, not the rod. If you haven't heard of this place you need to put it on your list: Tim Pond Camps. I've been fishing in Maine my whole life and this is hands down the best fishing of my life. 63 trout this year, 28 on my last visit alone. Cheap, great people and amazing fishing!

    Hello Ben,
    Thanks for all your reviews!
    I watched the one about the Hardy Zephrus Ultralite rod too.
    Which one do you prefer for fishing with dry flies? (Winston Air 2 Fly rod vs Hardy Zephrus Ultralite rod)
    Greetings from France!

      Would be great if you can test them back to back. Hardy Zenith/Zephrus/Ultralite in 8'6' #4 is a magic rod. Magic. But it is faster than the Winston. All comes down to what you like in a rod.

    I have a Winston Air 2 6wt. Love the rod for all sorts of reasons, but, it broke while fighting a fish. I had someone say that these rods shouldnt be fought with an overhead bend and another friend said the rod just had a defect. 6 weeks during teh summer to get it back...

    How does it compare to Pure in distance (60ft +-). And in windy conditions, does Air 2 tackle wind better? Worth upgrading from Pure to Air 2?

    • @Tridentflyfishing
      @Tridentflyfishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Air 2 is definitely faster and will be better in the wind and give you better distance, compared to the Pure.

      @@Tridentflyfishing thanks a lot. I remember the Pure review where it seemed like the Pure tackled distance a bit better while Air 2 was not so convincig, but I might have misunderstood.. Thanks again

    I like the Trident reviews but using an mpx is simply not the way to test any rod. I tested this rod against two other high end brands and the Air 2 won hands down as an all round ‘fishing’ rod. It does not suffer at all at distance if you use an appropriate line! You can hit the backing with the Air 2 if you want to. Use a true to weight line as the baseline for your reviews and work from there in terms of what line works best by adding weight if the stiffer pokers need it.

      Both are great options... the Air 2 has a quicker recovery speed, yet still maintains the 'Winston Feel'. The Pure is going to bend deeper into the blank, but doesn't have the same responsive feeling as the Air 2.

    That is a nice sales pitch, keep the sales coming and we will keep doing videos, aren't they free to make...and I'm sure if it didn't throw a Nymph rig or streamer, Winston would hear a lot of back lash from customers, I'm sure its a great Wet fly rod too.
