Angus was once asked what it was like being one of the best guitarists in the world. He replied that he had no idea and that he wasn't even the best guitarist in AC/DC! RIP to the heart and soul of AC/DC, the true "sound" of the band, Malcolm Young. Interesting note, the new album, Pwr Up, is dedicated to Malcolm and he receives co-writing credit on the songs on the album.
I'd agree with the album being about that, but there's also another way to look at the lyrics of this song that is more in context and that is being "in the black" is an old school accounting term. Books used to have losses written in red ink and everything else including profits in black ink, so when you were sinking and under water, you "were in the red" but when you were doin good you were in the black. This song is about being "Back In Black" The song is ALL about being back baby ! On the upswing ! Being on top again ! BA-A-A-A, BA-A-A-A, BACK IN BLACK ! ! !
Your right, when the members were told he died the group said no way he was close to death many times so they said he can't be dead. But sad it was true this time.
I wasn’t allowed to listen to a AC/DC in school! I recently saw a cover band who covered more of Bon Scott years and I was shocked that I didn’t know much of it because they didn’t put it on the radio in America ! It became Back in Black because of Bon Scott. The band was gonna quit and go their ways after Bon passed away. A family member asked them to try it again for Bon. After Bonn Scott’s death they brought in Brian Johnson because, aside from his talent, he sounded like Bonn Scott as far as his pitch, etc. Back in Black kinda represented the return of Scott’s essence and spirit to the band after his unexpected passing. It also represented the fact that, although their lead singer was gone, the band was still there and “Back in Black.”
Someone once described Brian Johnson's voice as being like 'a cement-mixer full of babies' and I can't think of a better analogy. With the exception of rhythm guitarist (and de facto group leader) Malcolm Young, this line-up currently has a hit album out - 40 years on from this track.
Their original singer, Bon Scott, died a year before this came out. Brain Johnson replaced him. They were Back in Black because they were in funeral/homage dress for Bon, so to speak.
