Funny how a nostalgic memory works. For my brain it always looked this awesome.
yeah2, I feel the same too between aoe2 from memory and aoe2 DE are kinda the same. not to mention the FPS, I didnt think much about that some years ago... I bought the DE game bundle and I regret nothing.

@@alitocalitocov4179 It's less imagination and more the functions of the brain. Our brain is pretty good at filling the gabs between informations: "You are a piece of ____". You probably read "shit" in your mind with almost no delay, even though it is missing a key word. Could have been "meat" or "paper" but your brain saw a blank and searched it's library for words, which match with the context. Same with visual information/images.
So technically your brain already made a "Definitive Edition" in real time back then.

Dude I was so bummed when they didn't remastered the intro, that was my favorite part to watch as I launched the game back in Elementary School.

@@Cafetero_ Well if I was adapting, I would have designed it more like the original. Their version is very bulky, rounded and cartoony compared with the original.
Personally though I'm quite the fan of the funny harnesses this guy is meant to represent so I would probably tweak it to look much more like it would have historically. Not hard for you to find what I'm talking about, just image search 'Morgan bible'. I'd probably make variants as well while still ensuring each variant is recognizable as the same unit.
Before the DE, the Teutonic knight looks like a black guy fighting with his bare hands :D

@@eniyan.a i think he's refering to the animation. the game surely can run in 60fps, but the animations were fixed as they are just sprites.
Obviously the HD version has the better graphics, but I always like the style of the left. Probably for the same reason I like the way Sim City 2000 and 3000 looked more than any of the following in the series.
finally got my hands on Simcity 3000 Unlimited edition after years of playing 3000 base game... It's nice to see the different options in terrain, seems like mountains/hills are generated in a better way now (not as good as mountains in 2000 though) and it's nice to see that the Sell Water to Neighbors bug SEEM to have been fixed, I can finally sell water without fear of penalties LOL
Personally the units idle movement especially of the horses(animation) is for me better in the original.The graphics is better in DE but the animation of the horse running as well as how it jumps and behave when idle for me is more preferable in the original

That is so lovely to see when developers remaster their games without changing a gameplay, but with a new physics and graphics.
The gameplay has been changed, not fundamentally, but some micromanagement things have been made easier, so it is easier to play now, but i would call it dumbing down the game, before de the game was harder to master
@@MakkerDon the action queue and being able to queue research and units at the same time is OP.
Also the auto farm reseed takes away the balance between having to micro farms in the late game and wasting wood on buying reseeds.
@@lukasg4807 yes the game got easier. I will always have more respect for the pros that got gut on aoc than the people now on de.
@@MakkerDon the main problem is it takes away the need to quickly switch back to buildings once a tech finishes, meaning you always have zero idle time. And the ability to pre-micro your lumberjacks and all your villagers is op. It takes away too much from the macro vs micro aspect of the game.

That's so beautiful. I played many many games over my years, and I will always go back to my first/favorite. I'll never forget the late morning playing, trying beat the campaign on the hardest level.

Wow. I didn't realize how much of a graphics enhancement that was. In my brain (as many other people's) it looks how I remembered it looking as a kid. But the new version is actually way more detailed.

Guys! GUYS!
So many comments complaining how TERRIBLE all the washed out fog or bloom or what have you is.
Listen and listen carefully: *It can all be turned off in the game's settings!*
The extra options in the game are:
-Bloom.
-Atmospheric lighting.
-Colour correction.
-Depth of field.
-Vignette.
-Extra fog effects.
They can ALL be turned off. When off, the game will look exactly like oldschool AoEII but with 4K sprites.

in my mind AoE 2 has always looked like the remaster lol... I first played the game in 2001 and wow, what a beautiful game it was
The Teutonic knight went from being a tall, proud and most intimidating infantry unit to just looking like a wide walking tent. There is still something very fearsome about that, but in a different way.
Then you never saw how those Knights looked like, that "tent" is hiding there entire chainmail armor...

That "tent" is your Commander! YOU WILL OBEY HIS EVERY COMMAND! OR ELSE YOU WILL LOSE EVERY CHICKEN!! Btw, he isn't a Teutonic Knight, he is actually a Knight Templar. Teutonic Knights have a black T on their tunics not a red cross.
New animation is bad. Old tutonic knight didn't shelter blade after every attack.
Both are good, but the Definitive edition is more realistic. It will also be amazing to improve Age of Empires 3 like this

hey, explain something to me: I am finding ways to download Age of Empires 2 only with the expansions already installed.... Age of Kings or Age of Conquerors... okay, but I'm playing the game for the 1st time... do I need to find the base game first? or do the expansions also include the base game missions? I want to play the original missions first
for my 1st time experience, I want to find the original base game, original campaign, original AI behavior... how can I find the game without any expansions?
and even if expansions are my only choice (Conquerors came first, right?) can I still play original campaign using expansion? are they still there? the start of the game is still the same no matter what version you have? I'm trying to understand how this works
@@FeelingShred You can download definitive edition. In fact my comment was about games after AOE3 but after I downloaded definitive edition and it is the same original version with cleaner graphics, you don't have to worry about AI because its just an additional option you can choose in settings, but you can also choose to play like the original game without new AI, there are other new missions with new histories, but everything old and original is also included. I recommend to download definitive edition, it is the same game with other new things, and it lost nothing from the original game

I just bought the AOE2 Definitive Edition, because of nostalgia, after being totally dissappointed because Warcraft 3 Reforge, i must say, the new AOE2 is awsome!! I am not talking only about the graphic improvement, i am talking about gameplay and smoothness, LOVE IT!
I wish they didnt replace the voices. Whenever I play the older campaigns my brain still expects the old voices to speak. They were so much better

Very late reply but much higher quality textures, sounds and music do that. Less overall compression and bigger in size.

The battle between the French and British was so fun and epic to watch as a 7 year old kid! I would restart the mission just to watch it over again.
I feel like the units look too cartoon-ish in the DE version, but the buildings look fabulous

Because DE actually looks better than OG
Game balance and mechanic play a huge part. DE makes OG players feel at home, and keep majority of quirky or "unintended" effects like Teutons fortified canon towers, Celts sheeps stealing etc.

Original is better, the old style looks nicer in my opinion, the new look is too glossy, but maybe that is nostalgia, but they should not try and fix something that isnt broken, ea is just milking the cow while the player community made and kept it popular

Ha, you should see it with the UHD pack installed. In this video it's too foggy and glossy. I'm guessing it's not set on the best settings 😏

To be fair, in this video the old version is not very well optimized, looks like it's being played on a very low resolution 11
The original one has a resolution of 640 or 720p, it didn't reach 1080p.
The screens were smaller at this time and we were used to low resolutions.

I can't even tell what the teutonic knight is wearing on this but in the original I could easily see his white coat with a cross on it, I could see his belt and I could tell he was wearing some sort of long sleeved close fit top and legs. In this the teutonic knight looks like a blurry red mess.
It the same Definitive edition in this video. That's definitely not how DE looks with the enhanced graphics pack. This one it's too foggy and glossy.

Sprites look nice, but the game looks washed out due to excessive bloom, a horrible layer of fog and everything has a blue tint to it, like a blue filter has been set over the whole screen. I don't understand why these decisions were made to make the game more difficult to read, where being able to see a clearly defined battleground with clean visuals in order to make quick decisions is absolutely vital :(
Agreed. Resolution is improved but color and clarity are worse. Strange decisions.

Seriously can't believe how 20 years after this is the best animations they can't come up with. Sure gameplay and STATIC visuals have a gorgeous look, but right when they start moving I'm like ok give me the old game back.

When I played the game for the first time, I thought the Teutonic Knight was a birdman :v
I know I'm probably alone in this but i really prefer the 2d sprites over the 3d models. 3d models tend to loook more cartoonish and give the game a very pg-13 vibe. 2d sprites might look like a pixelated mess if you zoom in but they were grittier and gorier. Originally AOE was a game that looked like it was trying to go for some historical authenticity (not even close i know, but tried at least). Now it looks like a free to play mobile game for children.
All units were created as 3D models then rendered out as 2D images so it is the exact same as in original but higher quality and better animations
Verry good to see what is "original" content and what is "remaster" content on top of the screen. Otherwise we didn't notice..............

DE: if I got this game, I would change the bluish colour gamut as it looks so unrealistic. Otherwise nice touches.

So the players can have the freedom to set it however they want. Not everyone is gonna be happy about it so that is why the devs did it

It does look a lot better, but I really needed the comparison to see it was more than just looking cleaner.
Did they make a redub as well? If so, I understand, because in remasters a change in voices is necessary as well.

Well with the patches on certain game servers I really feel the original game plays smoother/sharper. The new one the models seem almost mushy and I'm still trying to get it to feel normal -- Also for example Monks in the old game would die while trying to get off certain conversions and now they are able to complete them meaning the timings are off from the original
