This is really fascinating as many of the place names in London are now places here in Sydney..Sydenham, Lewisham, Camden ( which amusingly has a road in and out called Camden Valley Way . Which I now understand is like saying Cam Valley Valley way
White Aussies hail from Britain, they ain't native at all. The same for white Americans, allot of street names are actually places in England.
James your comment shows you dont know much about modern Australia; In my family white aussies come from; France, Italy, Nederlands, The US with earlier backgrounds in Caribbean, England via US , Scandinavia via US.... Some part chinese also. I have friends with background Slavic, Greek and more. So we are not all from British.

That's like me not acknowledging the fact that all Americans are not all white when I clearly stated they are not even native to the lands thus emigrated there from their homelands, as have every other racial group around the world to make up the fabric of what America is today.
Same goes for Australia and same goes for South Africa...it's called colonisation my friend...

I’m an American that lives in the New England area of the USA and we also have some of the same names of our citizens and towns also with the odd pronunciations. Our local accent derived from your country. We tend to drop our ‘r’s at the ends or middle of words. Speaker would be pronounced spekah or cah for car etc.
I definitely do the glottal-stops with Ts and Ps.
I love London so much. I was not born there, but I hope I could be buried there.

how about Marylebone and Grosvenor (in French the S in Gros is usually silent, therefore the pronunciation of Gro-V'nur )
When I was in the London Tube for the first time, I couldn't understand if they say all this "Leicester square", "Tottenham court road" wrong, or if I have some trouble with listening - maybe they say all the letters and I miss them. Later I found out all the truth about those words :-) Thanks for the reminding, it really cheered me up)

Hi Jade. Astonishingly, I found not too much difference between your Estuary Accent and the King's English accent that I speak. I do not see it as a matter of snobbery. I was taught to speak in this fashion as a means to overcome my stutter and if it is considered old school then so be it. I think your Estuary accent is delightful. You might be interested to know that when Scottish actor David Tennant took on the role of Dr Who it was decided that he should speak in an Estuary accent. Anyhow, all of us native English speakers ought to be able to harmonize with one another. BTW, I think the term Cockney is no longer used very much anymore and, in fact, frowned upon now. Nevertheless, a most informative video as always to your most avid fans including Teddy 001 and I. Toodles, DaRocDok

You missed a good example, "Thornton Heath". Pretty much becomes "Fort Neef" when pronounced by the locals!
Th fronting is very typical, yet i never noticed the pattern.. still hard to understand how it’s considered “right”. Saying F instead of th would be considered a mistake here.. but now when i am doing it, it actually helps me sound more British.

To'n'm- (Glottal-stop sound with the 'T' and missing out the 'A' in the 'ham" part of the word), 'o'spur- (losing the 'H' at the beginning of the word, "Hotspur", and also, using a glottal-stop again, for the 'T'.) To'n'm 'o'spur. However, no-one from Edmonton and Tottenham ever says: "I'm gunna go and watch Tottenham Hotspur play", in any case. They say: "I'm goin' up the Spurs." I'm from Edmonton- (or "E'mon'on", as we say dahn there), so I oughta know the score by now, old son.
I'm from London but I never had the glottal stop problem. Thank god. It sounds horrible

Could you please make one with the pronunciation in RP, Estuarian, and Cockney of Leicester Square compared to Leinster Square?
I stayed in Leinstes Square, and every time the taxi driver would take me to Leicester Square instead! :) I am an Italian native speaker.
The difference between Leicester Square and Leinster Square could lead to misunderstandings even for local native speakers. The best bet is probably to add extra information about where you want to go, e.g. "Leinster Square in Bayswater".

I am from Woolwich and we say that
Up until the end of the nineteenth century, when it was still a small village in Kent, it was pronounced as Loos’am. Outsiders moving in added the “sh” sound, as happened with Horsham in Sussex.

I think you need to read up on your Saxon. "ham" is not a farm - it's a village/estate and "ton/tun" is an enclosure, not an estate.
