You said it earlier, "You had to have some talent in these days." These MCs didn't need f-words, n-words, sloppy rhymes to get us up on the dance floor. They cooked in my era, I'm a 57 year old white man from SoCal: New York was boppin' in my day! ❤❤
I am 58 years old. And I learned an important thing, Good guys are chosen last, and they finish last. They withstand the test of time. Ruffnecks get chosen first, but finish by themselves in the end.
It took me a LONG time to figure that out!! I met my husband when I was 27, i’m 44 now. I got me the best of both worlds!! He’s always a “good guy” until he needs to be a Ruffneck💯💯💯
This song made hip hop history in 1993. MC Lyte was the first female rapper to go certified gold and the first one who won a Grammy with this song. This is why 1993 is often looked at as the start of the golden era of 90s hip hop because that same year Wu-Tang Clan also first stepped on the scene.
@goodfella1401 The golden era started in 87 or 88 and ended in 94 or 95. 93 was near the end of gthe golden era. By 95 their was a split, meaning we had uneerground and we had mainstream and they were separate. So after 93 was a dope time in hip hop as well but the golden era is considered 87-94 (95 maybe)...Everything else you stated is on point tho for sure! Big up!
This one is a double edge sword. Great song! One of her best in fact! But also this was the time hip hop was quickly changing from its fun, upbeat era to everything being downbeat and every rapper trying to sound harder to compete with gangsta rap, even those that weren't that to begin with. For some it worked, for others it was too much. I think Lyte held her own quite nicely here. One you should try from the females... Yo-Yo's "You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo" which also featured Ice Cube. Classic from someone that shoulda been bigger than her brief time in the spotlight.
Thank you! I both loved and hated this song and this era. The music was good, but the effect on our culture is something we're still dealing with. You had this song and "Gangster Bitch" both glorifying the worst kind of gangsta thug mentality.
Again, she is without question on the MT Rushmore of Female MC's! I remember when she was interviewed about this song, she really didn't want to do it because it isn't in line with her previous work. But she showed that she can travel on any lyrical BLVD she wishes.
Correct me if I’m wrong but some people didn’t love her previous album because they thought it was too soft. I didn’t agree but that’s why she came so hard with Ruffneck
@@Richkeyj Exactly correct, I thought "Bad as they want to be" was a solid LP as well, I think at that time, Hip Hop was shifting to a lane that Lyte did not feel comfortable in, however, Ruffneck was a banger and lyrically she delivered without question.
*Will y’all PLEASE tell him to watch ‘Cappucino’!!! I know people sleep on that record, I know there are a few REAL ones who with direct him that way…*
Keep doing whatcha doing young fella. MC LYTE one of the best MC’s ever! Keep rocking with the female MC’s Be sure to add BAHAMADIA “3 The Hard Way” on that list. ✊🏾✊🏾

I love when we get info like this to help fill out the story behind songs and the time in which they were a part of. Thanks goodfella.
Salt n Pepa were platinum by 1987! Yet they not a solo act.
