Ohhh time to tackle the most controversial precure series. My initial thoughts from rewatching the series is that it's not the worst one, and there are things to like about it. I can see the appeal of having a pink lead that is competent. I can see the appeal of the story and surprisingly the world building is great. But mannnnnn when it fails. It fails super hard. I'll make another comment about it, but the first half of the series is the best and worst part of the season.
Yes! One of my favorite seasons!! I feel like this season gets more hate than it deserves....and in my opinion....I think this was a better season than Suite-----DON"T SHOOT I think Doki Doki PreCure would've been a better 10th anniversary season than Happiness Charge, not because I think Happiness Charge is a bad season, but the amount of call backs and references this season makes are really good!
Some overall thoughts on the review: 16:33 I'm glad you pointed this out but man the monsters of the week this season are really goofy. Even by precure standards. 16:55 If you think Joe is bad wait until you see blue. At lead Joe tried to guide them in the right direction. Doesn't stop him from being a creeper and having a major plot hole related to him but whatever. 34:43 I'm totally stealing the term Mana Harem. Lol. In all seriousness I would be much more comfortable with Mana if the writers weren't trying so hard to shop her with everyone. I get that in the interview they wanted aspirational characters but it really takes away from what we could see. 37:30 I'm sorry but I hate the powerup episode. I could buy Mana filling in for the team, but when Mana talks about teamwork and constantly goes in alone while not contacting anyone to save AI Chan I draw the line. Every cure could've gotten a nice moment with their power ups and it's wasted. The team is barely in the episode too. And they have the nerve to call it teamup episode? And the message really falls flat when you barely have the other members in it. Bleak. People can rag on Smile, but in that show at least the girls have their moments as a team.
Mana's harem is already a long established fan term. Just go to danbooru and check it out since it has expanded since Doki Doki ended. As Mana has seduced Miyuki, Ichika, and several other leads in the movies.
I think Mana Aida is the only likable Mary Sue. She might be OP be she surely inspires people and kinda teaches us how to not to be a jerk even when you're better than everyone else around you. In fact, I love Cure Heart so much I bought her figurine

The season in my eyes became more interesting when I noticed the Steven universe parallels. I know one copying the other is impossible since both first aired in 2013 but it's fun to speculate. The cartoon being full of magical girls aside, Rose quartz resembles Princess Marie Ange quite a lot. For starters, both have long slightly ruffled huge pink hair and wear European-styled dresses with Rose quartz a.k.a. Pink diamond also being a princess of sorts. Both individuals are adored and admired by other characters, sometimes to the point of obsession by their knights (Cure sword = Pearl). Said knights and the princesses' partners (Joe=Greg Universe) miss terribly their beloved after they had mysteriously died yet there is hope for resurrection. The pink princesses leave behind a super powerful child that resembles their mother a lot and people wonder if that IS the mother. In Doki doki that can apply to Ai the baby, Cure Ace and Regina at the same time. People depend on the child a lot (Ai and Ace) making it feel torn about its destiny (Mostly Ace). In the end Rose/Marie Ange never comes back but by that point the child (Ace & Regina = Steven) have decided to carve out their own destiny. The knight (Cure Sword=Pearl) become more independent and find new waifus while the father figures... they get to take care of the child (Ai=Steven). Sorry for the long post but I have been waiting for an opportunity to say it.
Yes! One of my most favorite Precure of all time, watching this review bring me so much joy. I do love that I found out how the story could have been, it would've been better but I am happy with what we got. Oh and the Mana problem, I guess I have to wait till part 2 to see where this leads. Still very exciting to see this review, and the Doki Doki gang again, as I like to call them the Super Hero Precure team, because to me they are super heroes.
Hmmmm...looking back again from this video, i would say the first 12 episodes wasnt as bad as i thought. Then again, the first time i watched those first 12 episodes i go "huh...not bad. A bit rushed on few parts but not bad" kind of way. Also, the fact that i used to let that "Mary Sue" Mana/Heart slide when i was a kid and ironically cheer on to fight solo in the end was one of my few regrets in the franchise ^^; Besides her, *sigh* ...Regina...and the other "elephant" in the room besides those 2...and i find it shocking that the voice actress of Mana/Heart REALLY want to go on a full on all female harem. THAT explains why Rikka/Diamond and Alice/Rosetta were jealous(?) Of her being with Makoto/Sword too much ^^;

I find the Mana harem part to be funny, plus I can actually see that happening considering Mana was with Rikka and Alice longer, so they might create such affection to each other. But then again, this is a kids show, so of course they won't let that happen anytime soon. Then again, they also show some slight gay stuff and male cross dressing in Hugtto, so what do I know.

It was my first entry to the precure and I remember everyone was having fun with this season... Until that fateful episode that make little girl cry... And to be honest, I find people who dislike this season (at least when it aired) begin to dislike this season because of that decision on who to become (or to be precise, not become) Cure Ace, and then justifying their dissatisfaction by blaming the whole season as bad (like blaming Mana is Mary Sue, etc.). Only for them to get slap by HapCha next season which gives them an actual bad season. I personally like this season, though because you can feel the executive meddling by around mid-season even if you don't know the story behind the scene, it kinda hard to take the plot seriously (because you don't know whether it was actually meant that way, or the writer has to work around with restriction they are forced with). So I enjoy it kinda like how most people enjoy Smile, a fun and interesting concept, with flawed execution, but great character interactions to off-set its negative.
It is really ashame that people keep bashing this series because of accusing Mana as Mana-sue all the damn time, I really don't get that. Sure this series is not perfect, but it is a lot of fun and has a lot of charm in it. I want to see part 2 to see where the heck do I miss that other people see.
@@Addition2 Because Mana being a Mary Sue dragged down the rest of the team to be a bunch of bland characters outside of their own episodes. Everything became about Mana on one point.
I personally think Makoto’s arc being rushed wasn’t so she can be in the All Stars movie. It was because they wanted to bring in Aichan quicker for marketing reasons.
Am I the only one who don’t think Ai-chan is cute? Let’s not say we compare her with Hugtan because that’s no competition at all. Let’s compare her to Chiffon, Potpourri or even Candy, am I right?
“Even” Candy? I say “especially” Candy. Anyway, I’m on the same boat tbh. Way before I had an opinion on this season, I never found Ai to be particularly adorable. The shape of her head, the whitish skin, and her eyes have always bothered me.
I started following you for your Delicious Party Pretty Cure retrospectives so I was curious on your thoughts on the last Pretty Cure I was following avidly. I am not disappointed. I love this Season and your sense of humor and criticisms help. Didn't know Doki Doki got the Glitter Force treatment as well. The parallels between Joe and Rosemary isn't as uncanny as I remembered but Rosemary and Cure Sword on the other hand... God, I didn't realize how much I missed Doki Doki and how much I wished Delicious Party was like Doki Doki.
I'm excited for you to get to Go Princess because it's A: One of my personal favorites and B: It's ripe for Danganronpa jokes due to its themes of Hope and Despair and the fact you might need to watch out for a different Monaca...

Personal Opinion, Dokidoki Precure is a Mix-Bag, It's got good ideas, It's returning to the four member Team concept until the fifth Ranger comes in... But there are plenty of Flues, That being said, One of my Complaints are with Joe Okada... Not only did he Rip-off my name, But... Well, I'm kinda with half of you guys about him!!
Huh.... . That story about the prince and the bird sounds very similar to a certain other pink haired magical girl lead that was very popular at school and loved by almost everyone with a veteran teammate who was initially very dismissive of her.... . Although luckily Mana's story didn't end up nearly as tragic or heartbreaking
I dont get how this series was so popular. Not hating on people who love this season as its just my opinion but the season felt so messed up and rushed. The logic kinda made no sense in so many cases and felt like the characters could of been produced better (MANA NOT BEING A MARY SUE C-)

Heartcatch is my number one favorite follow by go princess at second. Yes precure 5 is actually my fifth favorite season. I have a few more seasons to watch but with Hugtto ending this Sunday, It will become the tenth season of precure I have watched.

Theres no connection in this franchise to that idea.. 24:05 fucking knew you would bring that up although surprised you didn't say any joke overall. But enough jokes I do love Doki Doki. I will say of this era (DDPC, HCPC, and GPPC) it is my least favorite but I do think it's a good seasons if a little under the average of seasons after Futari Wa. Still the season opens well and I am very excited for next time. As for this review I am surprised to learn that Makoto was suppose to be introduced later and by god do I wish she was introduced later given then we wouldn't have to deal with her, it was very unnoticeable at first. As for Bell while I get the argument of turning him more goofy I found that as the season progresses he still is threatening just also comedic so not a stick in the mud boring villain and it's why he's easily my favorite this season. Anyway can't wait to see your thoughts on this seasons converses and good luck with that.

The bunny fairy's name is supposed to be Sharuru, NOT Charles! Even this particular sub seems to have at least gotten a closer translation by presenting it as "Cheryl" unlike the other one which I personally feel is actually closer to Sharuru then that other one and establishes that she is in fact a she. Not that I have an issue with names like that being androgynous, but I feel this translation at least gets it a bit more right. Sorry for the rant.
And here we are, the first mediocre season of Precure before the onslaught of them, with some exceptions (Hopefully 3 with Star Twinkle). I can’t really say I like this season, in fact, I generally just don’t despite having a quirk or two. For me, it’s really hard to care for the team or their accomplishments because they are composed of overachievers, making them harder to relate compared to prior teams. That and the fact the significance for some of them were reduced as the season goes on thanks to two characters. I’ll go into more detail about that in the final part when we cover the characters but what became a decent start pretty much all goes downhill from here thanks to it’s convoluted and occasionally awkward plot with previous stated problems. And don’t get me started on it’s Pink Cure. Get used to people fawning over her for reasons that ranges from understandable to mundane because it’s going to get more aggravating from here. I get the reason for this is for her to be influential and show off her selflessness, as well as, breaking the mold of typical Pink Cure characteristics but it’s done in a way where the show makes it’s all about her practically all the damn time, which proved to be one of its biggest double edge sword. There’s a reason she’s called a “Mana-sue” among the fandom but more on her in Part 2......
Making her influential, selfless and more competent, does not make her a Mary Sue. Focusing too much on her also does not make her a Mary Sue. If that were the case, then why isn't people calling Megumi, Ichika, and Haruka as a Mary Sue, cause I do find similar traits that you complain about. I guess I will see Part 2 to know where I missed.
@neptuniafan No, it doesn’t but the way the show handles her does. Especially in a franchise that’s pride itself in teamwork and a quirky group of characters fighting the forces of evil. And for the record, Ichika have been called a Mary Sue and even worse because it’s so forced in comparison.

Even in the Black and White days, I just don't see it. I see it as a magical girl show that tries to differ themselves from the standard magical girls that are popular at that time, like Sailor Moon. And Ichika have been called a Mary Sue for a long time? Never heard that one before.
@neptuniafan Um......how? That’s basically the entire point of the very first Precure that carried over to other franchise. Pretty Cure are powerful in their own right but even more so when together. Especially when they are from the same company who made Super Sentai. Well, to be fair, it’s not as obvious due to Ichika being a mediocre character. Both in canon and from the fanbase’s perspective but when acknowledged, it’s often noted to be worse in comparison since Ichika has no significant character.
@@nintendolife25 It's not so much on teamwork that I see in Precure, it's the bonds between the characters I see that made them stronger. Teamwork is fine but relying too much on it can be easily be shown as weak, like I said there is a "we" in weak. Hugtto Precure has been advertised before the series began as the strongest Precure team, but throughout the series, I see none of that. That is because they rely so much on past teams and other Precures to get the job done. Do you know why I dislike the modern Ultraman series? It is because they rely so much on past Ultramen powers in order to be better, heck one can even say they NEED past Ultramen in order to just transform. Unlike past Ultramen, and even early Heisei Ultramen that don't need past Ultras powers to do the things they are good at.

Same here, Doki Doki Precure is one of my most favorite Precure series of all time, and I still don't get the hate for this season.

It is really ashame that people keep bashing this series because of accusing Mana as Mana-sue all the damn time, I really don't get that. Sure this series is not perfect, but it is a lot of fun and has a lot of charm in it. I want to see part 2 to see where the heck do I miss that other people see.
@@Addition2 Because Mana being a Mary Sue dragged down the rest of the team to be a bunch of bland characters outside of their own episodes. Everything became about Mana on one point.

I personally think Makoto’s arc being rushed wasn’t so she can be in the All Stars movie. It was because they wanted to bring in Aichan quicker for marketing reasons.

I started following you for your Delicious Party Pretty Cure retrospectives so I was curious on your thoughts on the last Pretty Cure I was following avidly. I am not disappointed. I love this Season and your sense of humor and criticisms help. Didn't know Doki Doki got the Glitter Force treatment as well. The parallels between Joe and Rosemary isn't as uncanny as I remembered but Rosemary and Cure Sword on the other hand... God, I didn't realize how much I missed Doki Doki and how much I wished Delicious Party was like Doki Doki.

Personal Opinion, Dokidoki Precure is a Mix-Bag, It's got good ideas, It's returning to the four member Team concept until the fifth Ranger comes in... I dont get how this series was so popular. Not hating on people who love this season as its just my opinion but the season felt so messed up and rushed. The logic kinda made no sense in so many cases and felt like the characters could of been produced better (MANA NOT BEING A MARY SUE C-)

Heartcatch is my number one favorite follow by go princess at second. Yes precure 5 is actually my fifth favorite season. I have a few more seasons to watch but with Hugtto ending this Sunday, It will become the tenth season of precure I have watched.

I will say of this era (DDPC, HCPC, and GPPC) it is my least favorite but I do think it's a good seasons if a little under the average of seasons after Futari Wa. Still the season opens well and I am very excited for next time. As for this review I am surprised to learn that Makoto was suppose to be introduced later and by god do I wish she was introduced later given then we wouldn't have to deal with her, it was very unnoticeable at first. As for Bell while I get the argument of turning him more goofy I found that as the season progresses he still is threatening just also comedic so not a stick in the mud boring villain and it's why he's easily my favorite this season. Anyway can't wait to see your thoughts on this seasons converses and good luck with that.

Operation Overdrive was more of an anniversary season than Doki Doki. Huggto was the first true anniversary season of the franchise.

The bunny fairy's name is supposed to be Sharuru, NOT Charles! Even this particular sub seems to have at least gotten a closer translation by presenting it as "Cheryl" unlike the other one which I personally feel is actually closer to Sharuru then that other one and establishes that she is in fact a she. Not that I have an issue with names like that being androgynous, but I feel this translation at least gets it a bit more right. Sorry for the rant.

And here we are, the first mediocre season of Precure before the onslaught of them, with some exceptions (Hopefully 3 with Star Twinkle). I can’t really say I like this season, in fact, I generally just don’t despite having a quirk or two. For me, it’s really hard to care for the team or their accomplishments because they are composed of overachievers, making them harder to relate compared to prior teams. That and the fact the significance for some of them were reduced as the season goes on thanks to two characters. I’ll go into more detail about that in the final part when we cover the characters but what became a decent start pretty much all goes downhill from here thanks to it’s convoluted and occasionally awkward plot with previous stated problems.
And don’t get me started on it’s Pink Cure. Get used to people fawning over her for reasons that ranges from understandable to mundane because it’s going to get more aggravating from here. I get the reason for this is for her to be influential and show off her selflessness, as well as, breaking the mold of typical Pink Cure characteristics but it’s done in a way where the show makes it’s all about her practically all the damn time, which proved to be one of its biggest double edge sword. There’s a reason she’s called a “Mana-sue” among the fandom but more on her in Part 2......
Making her influential, selfless and more competent, does not make her a Mary Sue. Focusing too much on her also does not make her a Mary Sue. If that were the case, then why isn't people calling Megumi, Ichika, and Haruka as a Mary Sue, cause I do find similar traits that you complain about.
I guess I will see Part 2 to know where I missed.

@@nintendolife25 Here is the thing that I probably don't have the memo in the Precure franchise, I never see Precure as something of a figure in teamwork, NEVER! Even in the Black and White days, I just don't see it. I see it as a magical girl show that tries to differ themselves from the standard magical girls that are popular at that time, like Sailor Moon.

@neptuniafan Um......how? That’s basically the entire point of the very first Precure that carried over to other franchise. Pretty Cure are powerful in their own right but even more so when together. Especially when they are from the same company who made Super Sentai.
Well, to be fair, it’s not as obvious due to Ichika being a mediocre character. Both in canon and from the fanbase’s perspective but when acknowledged, it’s often noted to be worse in comparison since Ichika has no significant character.
@@nintendolife25 It's not so much on teamwork that I see in Precure, it's the bonds between the characters I see that made them stronger. Teamwork is fine but relying too much on it can be easily be shown as weak, like I said there is a "we" in weak. Hugtto Precure has been advertised before the series began as the strongest Precure team, but throughout the series, I see none of that. That is because they rely so much on past teams and other Precures to get the job done.
Do you know why I dislike the modern Ultraman series? It is because they rely so much on past Ultramen powers in order to be better, heck one can even say they NEED past Ultramen in order to just transform. Unlike past Ultramen, and even early Heisei Ultramen that don't need past Ultras powers to do the things they are good at.
