What a lovely, relaxing, creative space you have to work in. When we down sized 6 years ago, we found a house with a second kitchen in the finished basement. I immediately claimed the space for my sewing space! There is built-in storage, countertops and space for a table for my sewing machine, a cutting table and an ironing station. It’s perfect! I didn’t have to wait for anything to be installed, etc. - just unpacked and started creating!

Lovely room! The soft colour palette has relaxing vibe that would really encourage the slow and contemplative handwork you do. Since you want to fill that wall space, AND don't like the appearance of the cutting board, I wonder if there's a way to get or make a picture frame that the cutting board can nest into the back of, with a grey or white flannel on styro or cork board fronting as a small-project "design wall"? Watching your videos has inspired me to finally start hexing up my quilting scraps pile, for something to do on planes now that I'm a long-distance grandma. I'm just waiting for some EPP papers to arrive, and thinking of containers. Already sourced a tray and book light that will fit under a plane seat as "persona item", and look forward to some fun getting that kitted out. Thanks for these videos!

Oh what a great idea about the picture frame, thank you so much. I’m so happy to hear you are starting a hexie project; and how great that you can take the tray on a place! Wishing you many happy stitching hours 😊🌸

My niece gave me a wonderful idea to use the cutting part of dental floss container for cutting thread while on airplane. Takes up less room than scissors.

@@patriciagechei8145 Brilliant, thanks! I once had my little pair of folding scissors confiscated by security. It was a tiny plane so the funny thing was they gave them to the pilot to hold, and he pilot put them in a basket of mints (the onboard refreshments!) and sat the basket on a seat a few feet away from me. I sat staring at them while biting my threads off my project...

Oh Mercy! It's all so beautiful! I would love to have a room just for sewing. My situation is unusual, I have one side of the downstairs for my bed and dresser and the other side is for sewing and hobby but both are curtained off separately
My son is actually building me a small shed in the garden which will be weather proof, so I have ideas of moving the sewing out there, but we shall see.
The setting and layout of your room is purposeful and lovely. I could imagine walking in there and feeling the urge to work on beautiful projects! I also have many different things going, projects here and there. Like you said, it's nice to work on the ones you feel inspired by at the moment.
Thank you for the beauty and inspiration and overall peace and happiness you give through this channel!

Thank you for sharing your lovely sewing space with us Emma! Everything is beautiful and you've made a great job of your sewing room. I am slowly taking over a small room for my creative pursuits but I can only do a small amount each day as my strength and mobility are poor. You've inspired me to allow myself to make time and space for my creative hobbies and now at 61 I'm feeling entitled to have my own space! Better late than never! I so enjoy your videos and bless the day I accidentally came across your lovely channel on you tube! I'm really glad you are running your own business and think that is so right for you and also for your family and I wish you every blessing for a happy and successful future doing what you enjoy. God bless from vera in Northern Ireland.

I can understand why you are so inspired in this room. It’s very calming. I have been creating a space in our home for 23 years when we moved here but as life evolved, my space changed. I always seemed to be boxing and unboxing and reorganizing but never actually had a space that lasted. I retired in 2010 and was all set up to sew in a beautiful big room with big windows and two closets and we traveled some for a year and a half. Then I went back to work at the same job I thought I’d retired from. Four years later, I finally actually retired to care for my mom. I renovated my sewing space into an apartment for her and moved my sewing space into a small bedroom with a walk-in closet. But caring for my mom was 24/7 and I mostly did some counted cross stitch when she was sleeping. She passed away a year ago and I’m just moving back into the big room with the big windows. I’ve pulled all my sewing things and fabrics out of the boxes I had packed them away in. So now I have two rooms, four closets, a kitchenette, and bathroom (the whole second floor) for my sewing area. I have new replacement windows being installed in a month or so. I just got an old double sewing machine table a neighbor gave me which holds my heavy duty machine and my serger now. I never dreamed I would have such a lovely environment to sew in. My husband is putting up fluorescent lighting, my mother’s large TV is a monitor for tutorials, and her dresser now holds skeins of wool, serger thread, fabrics, and floss. It is so much more than I ever thought I could have. I thought when I moved my mother in with us that she and I would have time to sew together but it wasn’t to happen. Now her space and sewing things are combined with mine. I like to think that in a way we are still making things together.

A fabulous and inspiring work room you have Emma. It’s lovely to have had a tour of your sewing room and to hear how it’s how evolved over the years. I use to have a craft wardrobe in our previous house but now i just have project bags, baskets, Little floral cases and Woolwarehouse bags storing all my things. I have a corner of the lounge where i keep things where i sit and it does me fine for now. One day i hope to have a room dedicated for just my crafts and sit in to read my books or just catch my breath. I love be the idea of a gallery wall and excited to see that evolve over time. Hi Emma. Loved seeing how your sewing room is coming along. My favourites are the pretty boxes. My sewing room is a second bedroom 10 ft x 11 ft. I have my two sewing machines, embroidery machine, IKEA cutting table, two rolling carts, and a larger cart for my pressing station. In the closet are two book cases where I organize my fabrics by colour, my love of horses, and EPP flower fabrics. On the windowsill are some precious items from my Moms sewing room. And my design wall is in the hallway, which I’m liking because it’s like rotating artwork without making holes in the wall.

Love all the tins! Never can have too many! My sewing space/storage room is called 'the computer room', even though we all have laptops now, but it has been storing my equipment, tools and fabric for many years. However, when I got a new Pfaff sewing machine, the computer desk became a full time sewing station, or at least it would if my schoolwork preparations didn't get in the way. I too use plastic stacking boxes with divided sections as project boxes, but I love the pink 15 section filing cabinet. Feeling like I need to do a big clear up in there this morning, so I shall have another cup of tea and hopefully the feeling will go away!😀🌸💖

I'm actually really curious about the clover pressing pad, this is the first time I've seen, it and I'm really curious about the sandpaper side and how it is used. Ah, irons... I'll admit that I've been looking at smaller irons for epp. Your little boxes and tins are super cute, and I love how you have the shallow project drawer. I feel like I'm always inspired by your videos as I watch. I should probably go see if you have any getting started posts on your blog. I will keep an eye out for kits from your shop. I feel like I am still wondering around when it comes to getting more supplies (time to go build up my notions and fabric wishlist). One of these days I would love to try hexiform, but I will probably stick with paper for now, since I have the dies for it.
Sewing space... I don't really have any. My work desk is a table in the dining area, and that is where I do most of my cutting and I usually stitch where I can. No really dedicated space right now since it is a pretty new hobby right now. Thank you again for the inspiring video.

    • @emmajonesvintagesewingbox

Thank you so much for watching. The sandpaper is used to hold fabric still if you are marking it, so perhaps you are drawing around a template to fussy cut your fabric, it would help with that. You can also lay your pieces out for your block and it holds them still. I hope that helps

I just discovered your channel tonight, so I know nothing about you, or your channel or your “shop” that you mention. Do you have a specific episode on what your shop is and what it looks like? Is your shop in your home. I would love to see pictures of it. I live in the state of Idaho in the USA in a small town in a fairly small senior citizen apartment. I have a sewing room that is nice enough. I’ve had to down size my sewing tidbits, so I could fit it into a smaller sewing room. But no matter how much I downsize, I always manage to get “built back up”. Ha! I hope we can get to know each other better as time goes on. I love all your things. I love boxes and tons of just things, too. I think I will enjoy your channel. I should be going to sleep, but yi think Iveill look at one more of your past videos.

Hi Anne, thanks ever so much for checking out my channel and videos, it will be lovely to get to know you. You sound like me, I always have lots of things around me. My shop is an online shop on my website and what I showed on the bookshelf is basically all it is, I have very limited space. I just sell the things I use and that I absolutely love. Thanks so much, have a lovely day

I loved your sewing room . I am trying to organize my space . It is in the basement, I painted my walls a very pale pink , but I have not had the money for any flooring . I have three very old sewing machines and one fairly new one . A very old fashion ironing board and little boxes and tins and glass jars with buttons and the like . It’s definitely not near as pretty as yours but I am very thankful for what I have . You have given me some new ideas . Thank you very much .

Tell your husband the shallow drawers are a valuable time saver, for keeping a lot of ideas easily accessable, so you are free to work on any one of them without a big time-consuming, unstacking, and restacking session. This saving of time and effort, makes you happy, and as you can get to more of them, you are more likely to get some of them finished, then have somewhere for another to be put in the emptied drawers as they become available. They may just be one of the most useful purchases you have made, keeping your creative 'juices' flowing. I love that you can just move the whole drawer to where you want to work on it, then put it back neatly and so easily. Well done you. For your wall space, have you heard about idea/mood boards? Where you can put a cork board or one that holds things with magnets, or a mixture, so you can keep on seeing your idea, the colours you are trying out for it, any inspirational picture references, and can pin up a sample block to help you remember what you want to achieve, or to see if something grows on you or not. All the best.

    • @emmajonesvintagesewingbox
      @emmajonesvintagesewingbox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Liberty is the brand and is also a shop. Tana lawn is just one of the types of fabrics they make. It is expensive because it is a high quality high thread count cotton but you can often buy it in small amounts which makes it more affordable and I like to mix it with other fabrics to make it go further. I hope that helps

Hi Emma, thank you for showing me around your sewing room. I don't actually have a permanent dedicated sewing area. My sewing machine lives under my standing desk in my creative room, when not in use. I have one sewing box and some of my sewing needles actually live in beside my crochet hooks in a pencil case lol I also have a small basket which sits on my stairs as a design feature lol, which holds some of my embroidery stash. I think I really need to re think my sewing storage and perhaps have all my sewing stash in one room together rather than scattered around the house. I tend to do my hand sewing sitting on the couch in my living room and my machine sewing in my creative studio/room. But having said that it seems to work for me for now, perhaps because I do not sew as often as I would like. I confess I have so many skills it is hard to keep up with everything I want to do. How I switch from one kind of project to another is, I knit until my fingers get a bit cramped then I switch to sewing and when I am done sewing I go back to knitting or do some crochet for a bit and when I am inspired to paint, I do that. I think my full house is turning into my creative studio lol I have just purchased a spinning wheel to spin my own yarn, that will sit proudly in the living room lol ;) T x
