Julian Ovenden was a choral scholar at Eton and then at Oxford; he trained as an opera singer and is married to Kate Royal, who is also an opera singer. What's astonishing is not his fabulous voice, but that he is also an excellent actor. The 2015 theatrical film of the Sound of Music with Ovenden as the Baron von Trapp is well worth seeking out.

In the original series Sam was such a stunning strawberry blonde. In the later series they turned her into a dowdy looking housewife. And don’t the English have any good looking men like Julian? Milner and Foyle were both attractive looking, but that’s about it.

hasn't julian ovenden got a good singing voice as well as playing andrew foyle in foyles war.

Why did she turn him down ???
He was posted away to another RAF base, then wrote to tell her he had found someone else. He did later return and told her it had been a mistake, and wanted to start again. However, I am not sure she really forgave him, and she then met her future husband.
