      In conducting some research for my dissertation I was going through back issues of Index Medicus, the index of all medical articles. Turn of previous century there was a category called "monsters" for infants born with deformities. It wasn't part of my dissertation, but I found myself tracking Monsters for as long as it still appeared as a medical category. It was over 10 years ago, so I don't remember when Index Medicus stopped using it as a category for medical articles.

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the UK, until the 1880s, anyone born with a deformity was medically called a monster. (I was researching this for a book.) I'm sure that the term was used well past that date, though, in many professional circumstances.

    Hi Jen! I was wondering if you are interested in French folk/fairy tales? If so, I would recommend Ti-Jean, and Ti-Jean-Le-Fort, by Melvin Gallant, two traditional Acadian fairy tale volumes. Acadians (I am one) are the descendants of French immigrants to the New World in the maritime provinces of Canada. Anyway, I find Ti-Jean extremely fun, and I saw similar story lines when reading traditional Irish fairy tales, which perhaps mean these stories were transmitted across the channels and languages..The two books are now out of print, but they have been split up and reprinted with different titles.

Of course the most important fairy tales are the ones recently written by Calvino and I've seen some of his books in your videos. This is amazing, very much looking forward to this series! I'm also relieved that you're going to feature non western fairy tales too, there are many that people don't seem to know which is a shame. Have you read any fairy tale adaptations by A.S Byatt? So excited for this!!!!! Have you read Theodora Goss? I have just started her book "In the Forest of Forgetting" which is a series of short stories. The first, "The Rose in Twelve Petals" is a Rapunzel/Sleeping Beauty re-telling and is interesting because she gives each "character" a voice, including the spinning wheel and the tower which I thought was very cool.

    If you're interested in reading fairytales from around the world, you could give a try to AK Ramanuja's folktales. He recorded the folktales that have been passed down orally for centuries in India. I am not too familiar with the western fairytales except the predominant ones, but I hear some of Ramanujan's fairytales are similar to or are a different version of some well known stories, as is the case with the fairytales of different countries. And, this is an interesting concept for a video :)

    Very excited for this!! When are you going to write your own fairy tales?

      +Gio Marty my poetry is inspired by folklore and I'm currently writing a short story collection also, in part, inspired by fairy tales.

    Super excited for this!! Fairy tales are such an interesting look at social history. Have you read any Asian fairy tales? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

    Question, me and one of my friends where wondering around some book shops today, talking about fairy tales and started talking about the lack of unconventional relationships that seem to appear in not only the history of fairy-tales but even in modern adaptations of fairy-tales (eg: same sex or even polyamorous). I did a quick google search and the only one I spotted was a novel called The Princes and The Treasure by Jeffrey A. Miles, Jackie Phillips. Anyway I was just wondering if you have stumbled on anything about this on your research or what your thoughts are on this?

      +Emily Jayne modern day fairy tales often have LGBTQ+ themes - check out Emma Donoghue and Kirsty Logan :)
