  • Solitary bees and wasps should be welcome in your garden. You can build them an interesting dwelling for laying their eggs and raising a family of wee bees and bugs, the good kind. To see the bee house in action, watch my short video entitled " Bee Hotel". I just learned that the Bee hotels do best if facing East to avoid the hot afternoon sun. For directions on building this simple structure, visit my blog post dated June 11th 2015 here: hopalonghollowg...

    After spending an hour on TH-cam on a rainy Sunday afternoon trying to find videos about cottage gardening and finding nothing that piqued my interests, I happened upon your channel! I am so glad that I did! Your style of gardening, right down to the peacocks, speaks to my soul! I have now spent 2 hours watching your videos and I am learning so much! Thank you Jeri for these awesome and educational videos!!!! Please keep them coming!!!! You are an inspiration!!!

      Thank you Michele, for your appreciation! I've always been attracted to the cottage and country gardens, they are so much more charming and easy going than formal gardens and anyone can grow them. I will continue to try and make interesting and informative videos for those whose taste runs along the rustic and natural, Old English and Early American style of gardening.

    Thank you Jeri. I posted a picture of a bug hotel I made. I had a couple comments from people who wanted to know what they were. So I shared this beautiful explanation from "Hop Along Hollow" to explain.

    What a perfectly splendid idea. I did not know about solitary bees. Thank you for teaching me a fascinating lesson in caring for our tiny helpers.

    I try and not comment on older videos, I figure creator isn't probably expecting any comments this late, but I'm a new comer to your channel and I love it!! ;) Although the story about the boy solitary bees was kind of sad, but that's life I suppose. We all have a purpose to fulfill. I've always had flowers planted, this year I'm including edibles and spending more time outside now that I'm not working. So I am going to build myself one, well, not for me for the bees. :) Thank you, for such beautiful content you share with your viewers, much appreciated!

      It's fine to comment on old videos because I get an email telling me of the comment. Not all the boy bees die, just the ones that mated.... so that's some consolation. In my next video, I'll be showing how to make an interesting bee hotel which is small, requires very little time to build, but is very unique. I will also talk about herbs and plants that bees love. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.

    Love the butterfly bush. Although they can grow a bit haywire, the are stunning attractors. Smell good too. I've two large bushes in the garden. Love the thatch on the bug home that's cool.

    I really love this bee house. Such a cute idea. I'm going to build one soon. We have hundreds, probably thousands, of Mason bees each year and possibly this will deter them from using my storage building structure!

      Thanks for coming along. The animals add a lot of joy to the gardens; they are natural cultivators.... which can be a problem at times. But I put up with their enthusiasm because I love their company. I have a little white hen than accompanies me whenever I am digging... she knows there will be yummy treats in that earth if she is patient enough.

    Most informative and enjoyable. The first structure was like a well appointed bed & breakfast; the second like a high rise luxury hotel for bees.
    Since we’re putting ours out in the Spring I assume we may not get long term staying guests until the fall. It will be interesting to see what happens.🐝🐞🕷🕸

      You will be surprised at how soon little creatures come to investigate the "rooms". Watch for tiny bees especially. I've had holes begin to fill up early in the spring!

      How exciting! That's encouraging. Our daffodils are beginning to bloom. So at least there is something for the early pollinators to enjoy.

    Well, I’m late to this game also, but I just love this video and my husband and I are going to make a bug hotel. We have a pile of old boards to use, and some logs to drill holes in. Our house sits on 2/3 of an acre and is mostly lawn. I would like to change this, but hubby isn’t on board yet. I figure the bug hotel is a start!

      I made the roof with Thatch, I found it on Amazon, years ago. I am sure you can find some still. I can't remember the name of the company

    I love this video! I am going to plant more flowers this summer for sure. I Love the hollyhocks and zinnias too! You have inspired me. The only thing I don't want to attract is wasps since we have a lot of them here in this area. Also, do you know anything about mud daubers? Are they beneficial to the flowers? Thank you for sharing this with all of us 😊

    • @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow
      @JeriLandersofHopalongHollow  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's Thatch, a sort of strawlike material often used in Europe and Early America for roofing.
