The Story of the Postcard (in English)

  • A postcard is a great way to send greetings and keep in touch with other people. You can send a postcard to someone to congratulate them on various occasions, to wish them a happy Easter, a merry Christmas, a happy new year, good health or just to say hello. In its early days, the postcard was an important means of communication. It was cheaper to send than a letter.
The oldest printed postcard in the world is said to be an English card from 1840. The official history of the postcard began in Austria in 1869. There was no image on the card, but the entire reverse side was reserved for writing. The first postcards were postal stationery cards, which had the postage pre-printed on the address side.
Images were soon introduced to postcards and initially featured landscapes. Postcards brought imagery to an era that otherwise lacked pictures. German postcard makers dominated the illustrated postcard market until the early 20th century. Some Swedish artists published illustrated cards at the end of the 1880s, the subjects of which were more familiar to Finnish people than those on the German cards.
The subjects of the illustrations became increasingly varied, and the first Finnish advertising postcards were published as early as at the end of the 19th century. Various charities also recognised the power of the postcard. Photography was invented around the same time as postcards. The first Finnish postcards with photographs were made in the 1890s by photographers Daniel Nyblin, Karl Emil Ståhlberg and I.K. Inha. Postcards by Finnish artists have created a unique image of Finland, and many Finnish people have grown up with the colourful visual worlds of artists such as Martta Wendelin and Rudolf Koivu.

Like or Dislike: Like. This historical documentary captures much of the magic of #postcards, and the homage to #Postcrossing is an appropriate end to the video.

Thank you for a great video. Post cards are interesting, resilient and highly valued. No deleting or recharging. Will there ever be a 100 year old text message?

Thank you for you comment @threewheeler624! Postcards truly are worth much more than just the carboard, the picture or the value of the stamp!
You also make a good point about the resilience of postcards as traces of the past. Digital media is not yet preserved as robustly as it should be, but some museums are working hard to fix this. Hopefully, people of tomorrow have the chance to get to know us from our messages just as we can look at history through written media!
