- The Rugby World Cup starts on Friday and the officiating will be a big talking point as ever. With that in mind, former international referee Nigel Owens and Telegraph Sport rugby reporter Charles Richardson watch England's 1991 World Cup quarter-final against France, known as one of the dirtiest games in the tournament, and officiate it by modern standards. It is fair to say the sport has changed a lot in 32 years!

Nigel Owens genuine love and respect for the game of Rugby is a beautiful thing to see. Would love more wholesome and interesting segments like this please Telegraph. Great work!
The flankers didn't have to stay bound until about 1995, as I recall.
Skinner *was* allowed to break his bind. The law was that he then had to go behind the back foot of the scrum, which he arguably didn't quite do. But no flankers were ever knowingly onside in those days! 😂
Were not the backrow allowed to detach from the scrum then, I know the law chaged around this time?
That punch on rob Andrew 🤔🤕 he surveying the following Monday
yeah mark they hall had day jobs to go back to on monday with all their injuries! i loved the the game before it went professional. Those players had a true love of playing for their country back then regardless of the risk to their professional careers.
Back when rugby was actually enjoyable to watch... newer days its boring!!!
Miss Nige reffing games, absolute legend
my thoughts exactly. Fast play, quick scrums/lineouts with the odd bit of gratuitous violence thrown in
Agreed. Scrums are so so lame these days
I don't know how Owens thinks the Cecillon tackle on Teague was legal, it was a blatant shoulder charge as the ref at the time clearly saw .
For me, it wasn't a 'wrap'. Prior to the Skinner tackle cecillion also trod on Brian Moores's neck and then Peter Winterbottom kicked him in the head if memory serves. Several players would have been sent off by the standards of todays snooze fest. In those days the referee wasn't trying to manage the game and just let the players get on with it. This is one of the reasons why the game has got so boring. As I aside I remember Blanco saying that whoever came to Paris would lose. Famous last words. My Welsh line manager was not a happy bunny especially with the Dafyd's getting dumped by Western Samoa.
Nigel says Micky Skinner was offside, but when did the law change to make flankers stay bound to scrums? I've googled a bit and can't find it but I would have guessed early 90s and so he would be ok here
He was fine to break his bind, but should have gone behind the back foot of the scrum so that he was not offside. Not sure he quite made it behind the back foot, but the scrum was wheeling at the time so it's hard to tell.
William weller😂😂😂
No love lost here 😁
The last words 💪🏻👍🏻🥂
Hislop was very late for that challenge , in fairness
And nearly knocked himself out in the process! 😂
Best referee the games ever had.
Rugbys become a referee, touch judge and TMO game now,not like proper rugby back in the day.
yup the cult of safetyism is ruining the game. I think in '91 we would have all laughed at cov19 or the idea that men can have wombs.
nothing on Winterbottom kicking Cecillon in the head ??
Just showing how soft the modern game is
Up The Wah's... ☝️🤪
