I found a possum with an eye injury. I treated him and offered to let him go but he had gotten used to us and he lived with for the rest of his life, two years. He was a sweetheart. He slept in our bed.

For tiny orphaned possum babies, in our case a baby, we found that a single cracked raw egg, some tiny bits of peaches/ red tiny grapes, a handful of little Insect based food bits like freeze dried mealworms, or other protein rich iguana kibble. etc.
The tiny baby was very emaciated from having no mama for seems like quite awhile. No injuries just malnourished. It’s head is half the size of a chicken egg and it is so gentle. After inspecting the videos, there are hardly any teeth so soft natural healthy foods as close to what it would find in nature that we learned from watching wildlife rehab center videos. Our first experience with a baby marsupial, so we are being careful to not touch at all as we don’t want it to be too comfortable with getting close to other humans that may harm it or treat it like a rat and harm the baby.
Should we see any injuries or behavior suggesting it is not healthy, aside from being so hungry and the spine area on our first video showed it was so underfed as in so,e thing def happened to the mama or it fell and was left behind. We have a large outdoor area with many, many slugs, snails, worms, big beetles even black widow spiders - since this possum baby showed up, not one of those listed problem insects have been spotted.
As an avid rare plant grower, with a potted home garden outside, I only treat certain plants with dilute Neem oil. Never roundup or Amy type of poison that we don’t want on or homegrown veggies, etc. This tiny baby is a mutual blessing and we believe it’s built it’s nest under our potting bench.
Also we’ve made sure to monitor looks and behavior to make sure it isn’t showing signs of rabies, etc. This is also in Central Valley of California where we have lots of farmlands, etc.
The only caution that holds- for those who have horses, possum excrement is highly dangerous for horses and the possum will eat and forage around horses. Should that happen, healthy or otherwise, the possum(s) should be rehomed to a wildlife center or another area where outdoor nasty bugs, mice, snakes, even scorpions, need to be eradicated.
Fun fact- possums are the closest and only marsupials such as kangaroos and koala bears that are naturally found in the US. They are very gentle, despite the fact they look like part of the rat family which is def not a creature you want around your yard or home as they will do damage and can carry fleas, ticks, all human contagions. Possums eat the ticks so they are a naturally beneficial to humans and their pets. Lastly, please keep even tiny pets away from tiny orphaned possums. Wildlife animals mixing with family pets is usually a horrible idea.
For those who read the entire.
This is definiteLy the time of year to keep an eye out for the good wildlife, keep tight lids on trash cans, etc. To those who are gentle with our natural beneficial wildlife, thank you for having not only a huge heart, but also being good stewards for nature. Consider teaching children to stay away from, and report anything that looks like a rodent to an adult right away. If it is a possum, still the safest idea to not directly interact with them.. ours introduced itself by licking me on my toes.. and I did play possum and froze until I saw it had snuggled up on my leg. Oh my heart!
      Thanks for a terrific video!💖

I had snails and slugs galore in my yard, which made it difficult to have a vegetable garden. One night I spotted a possum, and after I would see it often. Soon after, I noticed a lot of snail shells around. The possum was eating them. Within a couple of weeks they were gone! I haven't seen a snail around for three years now. I live in a city in California so it was cool having wildlife around; especially, beneficial critters! They also ate fruit from my neighbors tree that they never take care of and let the fruit rot on the ground. Awesome possum!

Yes, opossums are vital to our ecosystem. Like you said, like vultures, they keep our environment clean. If there were no vultures in the African wild, the place would be just a heaping, rotting, reeking, disease ridden garbage pile from all the decaying dead animal carcasses and rotting left over lion food.

I was sorta surprised that an O'possum can't drink cow's milk, especially after just hearing how they're kinda like "garbage eaters." They can eat ticks, rotten fruit, dead stuff, but no, no, no with milk from a cow. Crazy. 😆😀😍
Btw, very good video. I leave cat food out every night for my cats and of course I'll see a 'possum every night most of the time. They love any pet food.

A little bit of fruit, a raw cracked egg, are also great for the baby orphaned possums. Not too much fruit because the sugar isn’t great for growing babies, but any fruit that is a little too old for human consumption is perfect. What a great story and good person you are!💖

@@misstiffty thank you kindly. Your words came on a day I needed some encouragement - my animal loving side is my best quality. All the very best to you and I will totally keep the raw egg in mind. Do you Crack it onto the plate or keave in the shell? Crack the shell a little to help out?

    • @misstiffty
      @misstiffty 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@geralyn-mm for the newly released or tiny skinny babies without real teeth showing, def raw egg and I crack it in half so yolk on one side and egg with on the other, tiny pieces of shells are fine. The baby that adopted me in my back yard is getting some soft puppy food, yogurt to prevent bone deformations which is disastrous when babies done get calcium rich food. Some crushed pecans, a little bit of fruit like smushed grapes, blueberries, a little bit of very ripe peach. I’ve noticed it can’t eat the peels because the teeth aren’t grown in yet, so l gently pressuring on peeled berries, etc helps. Camned sardines in water, etc,
My definite no go zone is cow milk, cheese, and zero cat food as it would only draw the free roaming tiny baby way too close to the neighborhood cats and we have about two cats per tiny neighborhood block.
      Anything like that is fine.
On the plus side, the huge roach looking outdoor water beetles, the over abundance of snails, and all the spiders are gone since this maybe 11 week old baby showed up. It’s coat was a mess and its body is maybe 4 inches long total and their little mouths are tiny so they don’t know how or gave the strength to crack a chicken egg. It can also be boiled egg, but I think it really likes the raw egg yolk, canned dog food, and a tiny bit of mushy peach the best so far.
Good luck to you and your fabulous adventures with these adorable marsupials! This one found me and was so hungry it climbed up on my patio footstool and licked my toe while curled up next to my foot. Melted my heart. ♥🤷‍♀

My dog caught a baby one and almost killed it yesterday, I thought it was dead but then after my dog went inside it started getting up and walking around so I guess he was playing possum! In fact probably the only reason my dog didn’t completely kill it was because it played dead so I guess it really is a helpful survival strategy after all. Anyway I just moved it in a box to the other side of the yard where my dog can’t go since I don’t mind opposums since they don’t multiply super fast and take over like rats or mice. Now I just wish my dog would catch the rats in my yard instead but I think he caught the baby opposum instead because they’re slow and easy to catch unlike a rat, he looked so proud of himself but I doubt he could catch a rat like that lol! And an adult opposum would probably put up a pretty daunting fight so I doubt he would catch one of them.

Some how two babies got in. I believe I found the spot they got in. I had to do extensive work to make sure there were no places for small animals to get threw but I'm always being tested. They are only about 5 inches long. I saved them from my cats, and I have them in a small inside catio I barrow from my neighbor. I'd like to find a rehab to take them, but I'm not sure where in my area. Can you help me locate one close by? I live in Wexford county MI. Maybe some advice on what to feed them? My dog got a grip of the mother and pulled her out and killed her. Two small babies fell out of her pouch, less than 7 inches. What should I do with the babies? We don't have animal services that cater to picking up the orphans, only to collect the dead carcass of the Mother. I feel really guilty that the babies were stripped from their mother in that way, but I guess that's the circle of life. What can I do, sis?

Shampoo it in a small sink or bucket of water once a day for a few days, keeping its head away from running water, keep control of it by holding the neck (leaving a finger or two of space between to avoid choking it) as it will keep trying to avoid the activity, the dead lice will fall off but the living ones will be visible and can be removed with patience (they resemble tiny black grains of rice). Dawn is good as an animal shampoo and is proven safe from removing oil from animals caught in oil spills.

Ive been a rabbit household for thirty years yet harboring an attacked wild rabbit was a blind experience and involved several hours of novice work to try and save it's life. There are passionate people partial to different kinds of wildlife that would bend backwards to do the right thing if there isn't another option. My boyfriend ran a possum over tonight on the street,it was trying to cross and we thought it has left but he ran back and got hit by my boyfriend i feel so terrible tonight because we couldn’t even wait to see if it was Alive or not,we don’t even know if it was a mom or not,am pretty sure it was dead because his car bumper got broken,I feel guilty cus we could have waited to check if it had babies or if it was still alive 😣😔,also I was scared because am currently heavily pregnant and it running it over gave me a shock of my life 😔😣

unfortunately you haven't answered the most valuable question that most of us that aren't familiar with handling possums have and that's "Do they bight!" like really I'm not picking up a possum baby or not unless I'm sure they don't bite...

ho boy... could this use a reshoot. Try reshooting this with the title in mind and ditch the toy for a real animal. Possums are pretty damn cool species. Show a little respect.
