    Nice work, and wonderful tutorial too! I really like the bassline in this partcular tune: it’s good for weighing your options before you start drowning in lava at 17 Heat again. Now I can listen to it in meatworld and learn to play it properly! =)

    • @MyOtheHedgeFox
      @MyOtheHedgeFox 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also I really appreciate the small things like changing the time signature in the always-on key section as it changes in the melody!

    • @ScottPenick
      @ScottPenick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks! The time signatures that I decided to roll with are the ones that made the most sense to me. One could argue that the whole thing is just 4/4 (and if that works for you, is totally valid!), but for me hearing it as 8/8 (3+3+2) and then 16/8 (3+3+3+3+2+2) makes internalizing the feeling of the meter a lot cleaner.

    • @MyOtheHedgeFox
      @MyOtheHedgeFox 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ScottPenick This does make a lot more sense, yeah! Really like your not-so-standard but-very-sensible decision to divide the 8ths into trios and duos rather than quartets.

    in the main riff, is that a certain type of scale or something? it sounds so cool, idk much about music haha

    • @ScottPenick
      @ScottPenick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah! If you're referring to the part starting at 0:41, I'd say those riffs are strongly built on the harmonic minor scale.

    • @samheppner1291
      @samheppner1291 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The exact scale it runs through is the D double harmonic major scale I believe, which is the same as harmonic major but with the 2nd scale degree being flat, which gives it the really hot sound

  • @hanzogriffin
    @hanzogriffin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Great job, I think you captured the tone and aggression of the bassline, which I think is very important to overall feel of the song. One question, what is the significance of putting the song in 8/8 and 16/8? I never really seen this written out before and the phrasing of the sheet music is very interesting. Would there be a more common way to have written this out?

    • @ScottPenick
      @ScottPenick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I chose those because of where the strong pulses of the meter are. They are essentially as follows:
      8/8 -> 3 + 3 + 2 {most of the time}
      16/8 -> 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2
      You'll notice that I set the beam grouping to match that pulse as well to help in visual parsing it.
      There are other interpretations this that are totally valid, for what it's worth. You could hear the 8/8 sections in 4 with an accent on the 'and' of 2 most of the time, but to me that's a confusing way to view it.

  • @drazlet
    @drazlet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The only criticism I have of this is the way you grouped everything in triplets even if the momentary feel is in straight eighths. This song uses the 4/4 clave for the main bits, so seeing you notate it as 2 sets of 3 eighths and then 2 eighths is good, but the time signature doesn’t need to be 8/8 for it. That implies it’s compound time, and that makes playing stuff that’s felt as straight feel really wonky. I have to look away from the screen because the notation trips me up, even when the 4/4 clave’s notation is standardized and allows for the shifting feel without any need for forced grouping or stuff like that. On the whole though, this is excellent

    • @ScottPenick
      @ScottPenick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use Bias FX 2 as an amp sim, unfortunately I've never used a real-life pedal or amp in my life so I won't be able to help with the mapping between the BiasFX name and the real name, but the pedals used are, in order:
      'Advance Compressor' {looks like an old analog device feeding into a console} 'Clone Deluxe' {picture of centaur} 'Octaver' {tiiiiny bit of +1 octave} 'Bass Muff' {partially bypassed} 'British Lead Bass' {cabinet} 'Bass Superb Duo' {speaker}
      Hopefully this is enough to get you started. I experimented for a looooong time trying to dial in a tone that I liked for this one.
