    I was deaf when I started school, I developed a lisp and a stutter, and after surgeries, classes and doing everything to try to make my life better, I still was crucified for years because I always had speech problems. My President has a speech impediment, this man has a speech impediment, and more and more the world shrinks because I am no longer alone with my own speech impediment, I have great company.

      I’m sorry you had to be so alone because of something so arbitrary & outside of your control. Did you ever see The King’s Speech movie? There are so many great leaders of the past that for looks or speaking etc would never have been leaders if they lived in a world of cameras & microphones. 💜

    • @Rune-Thorne
      @Rune-Thorne 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lolawants2008 but that's the thing. Sometimes they're leaders by birth, or expectations. I lived in a world where there were no expectations, but fought to live up to my own. The King's speech is about a man who had the expectation to lead and the wealth to afford the best help to develop a strength from his weakness. I grew up in a small town where kids cruelty was expected and being different was a curse. I was blessed with being athletically gifted, so life got easier as I got older because how I talked became so much less important than how I played.

    What a beautiful, engaging interview! Stephanie Ruhle, you're showing your own amazing style of journalism! I will have to look for your first interview with John Hendrickson.
    It takes a lot of courage to do interviews, be in front of an audience, for anyone, but moreso someone with a stutter or speech impediment. I have so much respect for him and individuals who open up about their divergence because they really show us that we're not alone in these experiences, and that ultimately we, humanity, have more in common than any of these colorful characteristics, being part of the beautiful mosaic that is us. 💜✌️😎🍀

    John Hendrickson talks about Dr Yariss; one of the more progressive speech therapists, who said about his patients, “I’ve seen people’s lives change in a weekend, literally, and it’s not about improving their speech fluency. It’s because they met other people who cared about them, who didn’t care about the fluency of their speech but the content of what they were saying, and expressed to them that total acceptance.”
    This reminds me of the I HAVE A DREAM speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. He said, “It’s not the color of your skin that matters, it’s the content of your character.”

    I have anxiety and stuttered. For me, stuttering has been something that I would say has made decisions for me and has made me give up opportunities out of fear. I don't remember a day that I went to school happy when I was studying for fear of stuttering and being laughed at. Now I'm in college and I'm days away from entering the public speaking class. For many this is a challenge but for me it is something that I literally see as impossible. My thoughts drain my energy and my anxiety takes control. I started doing exercises to fight anxiety and it worked but at times like these I just feel tired and exhausted. I'm still learning English and I'm afraid to express myself considering everything else. I try my best and I know that there will be people who will say that it is not such a big deal but I believe that if a problem is bothering you then it is a serious problem, whatever it is.

      How is your class going? I can’t imagine how exhausting every day must be. I had an uncle and a fiancé who stuttered. My uncle when he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up replied a doctor. The "adult “ who asked him said” How do you expect to be a doctor? You can’t even talk?” He went on to graduate college and medical school and became a well respected doctor in his community. Don’t let anyone get ya down! In reality they are very much the ones to be pitied.

      Hi I felt you when you said that stuttering has definetly made you make decisions for you in your life, there’s so much I wish I could say and do but my anxiety makes me thinks that no matter who will make fun of me for it my parents don’t even pay attention to me when I speak a good amount of the time. It’s made my self confidence be almost non existent. I hope everything goes okay for you and just know that your not alone in struggling with it.

      So you think that not being able talk at a table, ask a question, answer the phone is funny. Not being able to give a speech at family gatherings, weddings, funerals due to having a speech impediment or a stutter is soul destroying. Grow up and listen to people with speech impediments or stutters and learn.
      Joe Biden can speak in front of world leaders or the media. And yes, I can tell when he is having difficulty because we stutterers have little tics or movements that give us a little bit of confidence to say certain words.
      People who stutter can block or have repetitions and other impediments.
      Let's hope you never have a stroke or some brain trauma that causes speech problems, because you will get so frustrated.
