    Mads, you have always been really good and reading all instructions! Your stove is really beautiful!

    Hi Mads. I got my hands on the same stove (well.. without the cool window), and now it is fast getting colder I need to install it asap.
    A couple of weeks ago I didn't know anything about heating systems, let alone in a boat. You can't imagine how tremendously valuable it is to me to see you deal with the whole installation and the red hot glowing heater.
    Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and these experiences.
    Peace!

    I’m so glad I’ve found your videos! I’ve been watching several youtubers/ live aboard channels.
    And none of them show the dirty job of rebuilding.
    And they all go to the same places: Caribbean, Tahiti...paradise after paradise. Blah blah blah!!
    I can’t wait till you go full time sail/liveaboard!!

    I love it when you do a “fast clean up.” LOL! I can’t work in a mess either. I love how everything came together on this installation. It looks fabulous.

    Wow. I''m researching all info I can to install a heater aboard my boat. I saw your episode of Athena's heater which I liked a lot, now I'm tracing back to your older episodes, maybe you haven't noticed but you have grown so much in your editing, confidence and the overall quality of your TH-cam work. Congrats, I can extrapolate and see your channel will success even more. Thanks for your efforts. Your teachings are very helpful to others looking to improve their sailing life !

    Excellent! Your solutions are very innovative. I can see the making the video interferes a little with your process of actually doing the work. But the outcome still looks fantastic. Looking forward more Mads! Keep um coming!

    Excellent job! Be sure to let us know why the flame didn't go out if you already have the answer to that.

      Often trial and error the first time. I know you will have it working just fine soon! :)

      Well that is great news! Glad to hear everything seems to be all working well!
      Once you get some cooler temperatures, let me know how well it heats your cabin. The nice thing is that small spaces don't take much to heat.
      Last January we had -10 Celsius here and with my little wall furnace and a small electric space heater I had a comfortable temperature of 20 Celsius in the cabin. :)

      Yes it is good to have a couple options for your heat sources. I also put down foam
      matting and carpet through the winter months last year and it was amazing how much warmer it was.
      Having such small spaces like our cabins are not too difficult to heat anyways. :)

    Excellent production job on the videos and a fantastic job on the heater installation. Just wondering why you didn't go with a simpler option, like a propane unit.

      @SailLife  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lester Burnham Thank you, Lester :) It wasn't an easy decision that's for sure. Both have distinct advantages over one another. Maybe I should do a quick video on the subject :) Having both would be awesome! Personally I went with the Refleks stove because it is completely silent, and diesel is easier for me to get my hands on than propane. I looked long and hard at the Dickinson propane heater. My good friend Alfy over at Life is Like Sailing has a Dickinson propane heater. If you like head over and check out his video on the propane heater (th-cam.com/video/hAOYtsw6VI8/w-d-xo.html) :)

    I was wondering about the hole you had to cut in the overhead. The deck seemed to be cored from the pictures. I read in one of the sailboat maintenance books that when cutting into or cutting through any cored area that you should cut, or dig, out some of the core material and seal the exposed edge by glassing it in. Did you do that, or are you relying on the flange seal to keep water out of the core, or perhaps I was mistaken and you don't have a cored deck in the first place?
    In any case, I really do appreciate the videos! You are doing now what I want to do, as soon as I can afford to begin. In the meantime I must live vicariously through videos like yours. Thanks again.

      Stephen McColley Thank you so much :) You are very kind! Also, you are 100% correct the best thing would be to remove some of the core material (in my case foam) and seal the edges using thickened epoxy. I'm not overly worried because the foam is very resilient - nothing at all like wood :) I'm going to build a chain locker this summer while I'm doing that I might as well remove the chimney and seal the edges.

    Well that looks great and your work is excellent. I am learning a lot from you but I didn't learn anything from you about lighting that fire. I grew up on a farm and I learned a long time ago about lighting fires. Ha :)

    I am very much enjoying your videos and am inspired by your craftsmanship. I am concerned by the plan for automation of the small tank refill. You mentioned the possibility of a regulator failure dumping the entire contents of the small tank. If a low level detection in the small tank called for automated refill, might not the contents of the main tank be transferred through the small tank to the overflow tank?

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much :) I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. You present an excellent point, and it's a valid concern :) The scenario you mention is something I'll need to handle. I could place a tank sender in the overflow tank and simply disable the automatic transfer if there is any content in the overflow tank. I could also simply monitor the signal from the tank sender in the small tank (that feeds the stove). If the tank sender doesn't signal a rise in fuel level, I'll know there is a leak somewhere in the system. No matter where the leak is the automatic transfer should be stopped. I think a tank sender in the overflow tank would be nice in either case as it would warn me of any problems with the regulator. So far needing to push a button to transfer diesel hasn't been a nuisance but we'll see what happens when the fuel consumption rises as the weather gets colder :)

    Love your video's! Maybe you can use your pictures from before filming and add voice over. I think you are very brave, taking on and finishing this project. But I guess that is partly your job, to see things get done. I'm very inspired, but with my boat I don't even know where to start or how to plan! I bought a little propane heater, it's not installed yet.

    Do you have a secured flue cap that permits the H pipe to be removed when stove is not in use, or heavy weather, other?
    Did your diesel tank already have stub for the added pump? Would like to see that pump set-up.
    Any down drafting issue?
    Has heater been used while underway yet?
    Maybe nightshots of just glow of stove window?
    Room for an overflow tank sure adds to the over all space requirements assuming others have elevated main tank
    Your insullation R factor appears to surpass the original and perhaps many "stock" boats?

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Finn Green I do have a cap that I can put on when not using the stove. I usually leave the H pipe on when I'm not sailing.
      I've used the stove under sail two times. Due to the way the regulator is constructed the stove won't operate correctly if heeled far over on one tack. I've only experienced downdraft one time - lots of smoke down below. It occurred while using the stove under sail I've never had any issues while at dock or anchor :) For heating while underway (under sail) in a sailboat the Webasto-type heaters seem like the way to go. For heating, while docked (or in a motorboat or any type of boat that doesn't heel over) I would choose a Refleks stove any day :)
      I would love to get some night-shots of the stove! I'll give it a try put I film using my GoPro and it doesn't seem to perform all that well in low light. While doing the refit, I put in 15 mm of insulation in most places (glued to the inside of the hull). That seems to help a lot :) There are a few spots I didn't insulate but I'll do those next summer (or as soon as the temperature allows it). It's easy, cheap and very quick to do :)

      ***** Norwegian and Danish are 90% the same writing language you know. To speak Danish is a whole other matter... I guess we would have an easier time speaking english to one another or writing than actually speaking Norwegian/Danish. Been alot in Denmark however, and you do have some crazy things you say that doesn't give much meaning to a simpel Norwegian. We are all Vikings tho, so just bring out the mead and it will be smiles all around.

    Hello Mads, I've only recently begun watching your series and very much enjoy your style and content. Keep up the good work!
    I was wondering about your decision to use a separate overflow tank. Would it not have been easier to route overflow back into the main tank? Is there a safety reason I'm missing?

    Without knowing the exact lay out of your boat couldn't you just run the overflow back to the main fuel tank? that way in the event of failure you wont have to worry about filling the overflow tank

    • @SailLife
      @SailLife  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could if it wasn't for the fact that the top of the main fuel tank sits higher than the regulator on the stove :)
