Not hating for not knowing Ryan Gosling is. What you may have missed with the third image is the story that Dan is telling. Ryan had just film the sequel to Blade Runner, where his character is both the blade runner and the replicant. The device (which is used to find out is someone is a replica) is similar'ish to the device used by Harrison Ford's Blade runner seen in the original film.
One of the ways that Ridley Scott denoted a Replicant in the original film was by having the Red eye in the eyes, which you can see in Ryan Gosling's eye and is highlighted through the looking glass. It can be done in post production but my guess is that Dan would have created the effect in camera, using a see through mirror bouncing a light at 90 degree into Ryan's eye, which was the effect done in the original film.
This is what I love about Dan's work is his ability to tell a story and the little details, such as the doll head above Ryan Gosling.
    Excellent video. :D

      THANKS FOR THAT!
That is so cool. Yeah, unfortunately, I am not a big movie guy. My heart and interest is focused on the still image. Great backstory on the Gosling shot. Appreciated.

There are a few online tutorials.
Here is one you may enjoy.
And remember, a lot has to do with the light.

Great video, as usual. At 5:03, you talk about 5-6 and 5-11. What do you mean by that?

That’s the metering for the lights f.6 and f11.

Those are actual props from the movies Don. You get points for not knowing who those people are - even though I work in the biz and I like them.

Very interesting explanations, the pointing of the lights, and the technical review is great. But, Dan's subjects are part of the stories of his photos. and when he shots actors, the shot includes not just the technical stuff but also the story he tells in a direct connection to his subject. And if those subjects are actors you should do a research on who they are, and why the props in the frame are there. It is a huge part of his work.

Check out Ian Allen. I think you'd love his work. His work feels like a continuation of what Dan does.

Dan sure knows how to do his lighting but there's a lot of dodge and burning going on. What's the fun in doing the adjustments in photoshop you say? Well, as good as Dan is out of camera picture doesn't look anywhere close to what you see here(and I don't mean the color adjustments).
