Love it! I just made a socket handle for a framing slick two weeks ago. You’re totally right, a bit of patience with a plane, chisel and rasp worked out just fine. No need for a lathe.
Cool. Just last weekend I rehandled a pigsticker. It went pretty much the way yours went. I rounded off my handle a bit more than yours, I like the feel of the oval handles.
Heat up the tang with a torch and tap it in place. You have to leave it just a little oversize before you burn it in. This hardens up the wood and shrinks it around the tang, making it less likely to come loose on you. A chisel iron landing on your foot could wreck your day.
If you do it only on the tang, you theoretically shouldn’t get enough heat transfer to the edge of the chisel to ruin the temper. But yes, you don’t want to heat the actual blade portion
James - Thanks great example for handles !...... I missed some of the details... 1. Is that white Oak - kiln dried / air dried / Green ? does it matter ? 2. What size is the monster Mortise Chisel ? I am going back to your video lists for MORE....! ! would a Mini Catalog style guide help viewers find your Projects/Topics by date or alphabetical listings ..... Lots of good Work.
Interesting. I would really appreciate you continuing to include the amount of time involved in stages of a project. The time lapse used in many project videos, not just yours, can be a daunting thing to get past mentally. Have a scale/scope of time things take would be very helpful.
After watching so many of your videos, I feel like you, or maybe your community, would be the best to seek help from. I was given an old No. 6 hand plane, 14". No. 6 is the only marking on the entire plane. Everything resembles a Stanley but not sure. The weird thing about the plane is the advancement knob. You turn the knob counterclockwise to advance the iron and clockwise to retract the iron. Is this normal? None of my other planes are like that and I have never seen one this way. I do have photos if anyone wants to see the plane and can help me identifying it. Or at least tell me why it's backwards? Maybe a defect?
Feel free to send pictures to my email. You can find it listed in the about tab on the channel page. I would post it here but it usually gets a skimmed. Also you could post it in one of the two hive mind groups that the community uses to answer questions. There's links to both of them in the description if you want to see that. As to the question is the first few types that Stanley made had the depth screw going the other direction. But they usually had other casting on their rather than just a number. I'd love to take a look at it.
Love your work. Especially all the hand tool work. But could i make a suggestion? Seems like the mic is too close to your mouth. In all of your videos, we can hear your breathing and sniffing. It feels kinda gross. Like somebody's breathing down your neck the whole time. Try moving the mic a bit farther from your mouth please if you would
You make me want to create tools I'm not ever likely to use!
Love it!

WOW - just found your PLAYLISTs ! -- Super organization for wood - hand tool - Fan !
Thanks. I try to keep them organized. But with almost 2000 videos between the two channels it can get a bit hard.
Beautiful job! Fine looking tools from pig’s ear!
Really beautiful work, James! Neat looking handles! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

4:47 Thought it was a railroad spike!
Impressive and inspiring, thanks. I have an old chisel that needs a handle. I am off to my shop.
nice work
i love it
Thx 🙏
thanks

That is I very common way of doing it. I have a video showing that one too.
Would there not be a chance of ruining the temper of the steel?

If you just heat the tang you are good.
Excellent video. I noticed the Narex Richter chisel. Are they as good as people say ?
Here is a test I did comparing a pile of them. th-cam.com/video/qVb3QcIVVIo/w-d-xo.html
Spoon bits would have helped with the stepdown.

Thanks man. This oak is air dried. But it does not matter as long as it is dried. The big one was 3/4"

I talk about that on the other channel where I discuss the methods. This channel is just for easy watching.

👍👍👍👍
Did you just use "the glossy star" on your thumbnail?!!?!!
Yup. I have been using that on almost all videos on this channel for about 2 years. It is a small bit of fun for the inside group to watch for.
@@WoodByWright Oh. ok. hardcore handtool WW and softcore gloss tricks... ill make a note of that for use on my ""social media":)

Yup. Our normal mic was out of commission and we had to use this one for a series of shoots.
