My vise is based on his design, except I chose not to weld the frame to avoid distortion. I had the advantage of using a milling machine so the parts were accurate and everything lined up and went together nicely, with no tight spots. It's one of my favourite things, and works perfectly. There's something very satisfying about being able to slide the moving jaw in and out, and then clamping with a quarter turn of the handle.
You were correct, I saw your video seven hours after you published it and all the chisel sizes were sold out. I'll look for a second hand set next week when people realise that making the handles is harder than you make it look!😂

The woodturner’s secret! Not only do turners make their own handles, many of us grind our own tools from bar stock. Jantz Knifemaking Supply and Doug Thompson sell unground bar stock. What a coincidence !? I just finished making almost an exact replica about 2 weeks ago, same everything except all free hand planes and an old chisel. I'm a retired designer / builder and now I get to just chill without the hurry up and pressure and transition to finer projects using more hand tools and really getting into details. The new chisels were a gift to myself and made personal by doing the handles, No thank you to forging my own. That would be another shop and I don't have the room. Thanks for listening. Ciao
My dad just bought me the 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" and 1" of the Narex Richter chisels. I just started in woodworking in December and trying to start my own company (not going so well so far). The chisels i used before were black handle steel ended Husky chisels from Home Depot that were like $10 each. What a difference the Narex were. Both sets were sharpened the same way, similar to the "scary sharp" system. But the Narex were just so so much better to work with. I'm glad i have those Narex now. I use the Husky's to get the bulk of the wood chipped away then i use the Narex for the finer work.
Those cheap chisel are important; I kept them visible on the jobsite, and my good ones hidden or locked up ( not joking). It's amazing how abusive people are to all tools. $200 kitchen knife? Someone will use it in a frying pan. Got a leatherman/ Gerber? Someone will grab it and use it as a crowbar. If I told someone I paid $10 for a chisel blank, they'd grab it and tear out some base board, bashing right thru nails. They won't care how long it takes to repair, or how much time I spent making the handle. I realize that I'm a grumpy old man now and that I can't handle employees / coworkers

As long as you do this in your own time and don't factor time as a cost this is a great money-saving tip. If you put in lost work-time or have to count money/time it is not so good...

Just finished my first custom handled chisel. Used a different pattern for the handle bud super excited. Bought the standard chisels ($9.99) and am very impressed. Took a great edge that will shave hair and like the handle fitting my large hand better. Thank you!
These unhandled Narex chisels are great. I bought a set about a year ago and made handles for them. My handle design is very old time traditional, so I used a jig on the table saw to make hexagonal blanks and then put them on the lathe to finish them. You won't regret purchasing these chisels.
When I first saw this video the chisel sets were completely sold out (and I went to the site only an hour or two after you posted it) they finally had the set back in stock last week so I picked one up, it arrived today and as a woodturner I’m really looking forward to customizing some handles for this, maybe doing a little custom engraving to make the set really just mine.

I own two full sets - one of which I've had for at least 40 years - plus a shop build slick and a 2" chisel. My Menz Shed has a hopeless collection of never sharp beat up chisels, so I'll gift them my old set and keep the Narex chisels. Hmmm. I am really looking forward to making those handles! 😁
This feels like a bonus episode of "cool tools". I've been holding off on buying a set of chisels and this was the push I needed. Plus, it's a chance to use that awesome C-14 I got a few months ago.
Yup; love tools i make and use; made some handheld jigsaw blade handles, few different ones out of acrylic as its light and strong; use then for cutting stock out of small mortises on framing timber that id rather drill saw rasp and file than chisel; magic mate
I LOVE this tip. Making handles is one of the most fun woodcrafting activities you can do in my honest opinion. It's design, but then there is a very low requirement for precision since it just needs to fit your hand. This is so helpful for me, because I'm always looking for cheaper tools. Thank you!
I built this jig when I saw the Pask Makes vid and have been having fun making tool handles ever since. It is brilliant and makes the tool so much more personal when I customize it to my hand.

I'm excited. I've wanted to upgrade my construction chisels for a while but haven't been able to afford a nice set. Now I can do it sooner, and making my own handles is going to make them feel so good in my hand both physically and sentimentally.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. There are a number of ways to look at this problem. Making your own handles allows you to customize size and shape. This is key for those with different-sized hands or those who like asymmetric flat areas. On the other hand (pun, hahaha), if it takes you 1 hour to to make a handle, then your time is valued at $27/hr.
Well I took your advise and got the Narex Richard Extra handless chisel from Tayler Toolworks. It came all polished and looked great. After honing the back with 220 grit on a piece of float glass from scary sharp it still has a hollow in the back.
I get a lot of antique tools for dirt cheap and most are missing handles and need some love. The usa steel is exceptional and making a custom handle feels great! Not to mention fixing up a tool for another 50+ years of service! Great video and tip on the jig!

At first I thought this was a good deal but when looking further into it it appears these blades are from the narex 8105 chisels and in the uk you can get a set of six with handles already fitted for £62 Inc vat. But as pointed out it is always nice to have your tools tailored to suit and it's a nice project to do. Thanks for the video Stump and have a great weekend. Update, its just been pointed out the narex 8105 are different, the ones that stumpy was showing are more likely to be the more expensive narex 8116 that come in at £90 for a set of six. Sorry for any confusion.
Those are different blades than the Narex 8105s. THose blades at Workshop Heaven are the 'Bevel Edge' blades - you can see that the edge is clearly different in the 8105s than these. A set of 5 of these blades with handles is £159.90, equivalent to about $200 USD... $40 over Stumpy's link w/o handles. Obv shipping prices might change that, but looks like handles will cost you $40 for those Ricther blades... still not terrible if you want quality but don't want to make your own handles.
I made a grip for a cheap sword once that was sanded to loosly fit my fingers. It didn't scream out that it was designed like that but it was great to hold and was nonslip even though it was poly-coated.

Think about it in terms of operations and machine set-ups required. The chisels are probably forged en masse, then ground and polished on an assembly line (CNC) machine. Once you add a handle, let alone the assembly step, you're going to need some human input, and humans are expensive.
@@swolebro Breaking down lumber into blanks, machining blanks into handles, drilling the holes for the chisel, making a ferrule, adding a ferrule, finishing them and fitting them. There is a lost that has to go into it, I have no idea how much time it would take, But the step up in price is understandable
A lot of the savings are what the others have said, but there's one more big difference in people costs: small family companies don't usually have a dozen layers of middle management. A large international corporation has a lot of overhead in just being a company, but they usually add a bunch more to ensure every worker is replaceable.
If you melt plastic milk jugs . Roll the soft plastic. You can turn on a lathe a super handle. Just use a old toaster oven. Add color plastics to make really cool handles / knobs etc.
Wow, I've got handles. Several types my father had. Also some old chisels I have are bad but the handles are great and can be removed and possibly be reused. Thanks for the source. 😎 Plenty of scraps of good hardwoods about, too. Gives me so many ideas. 🤔😊
Years ago I started to buy second hand chisels, I got toknow which ones were of value. Most of them had no or damaged handles. Easy peasy to replace them and I didn't use a jig or a bandsaw. Still have my original handles after 20 years
You have become like the iconic Phil Swift for "Flex seal" commercials man. I bought several items from TT after your reviews and I wanted to try but they were all "SOLD OUT". Hope they will get more as I look forward to owning one of Narex's sets, especially for this price

I did it with the exact same jig from Pastmakes for a set of unfinished carving chisels I bought on Dictum (I live in Europe). I made them too large for detail carving chisels but I'm proud of them, the nice thing is I can always rework the handles when I have the time or need. The octogonal shape feels good in the hands ! And he also had a template for a carving knife handle too, which was nice 🙂 The chisels with side bevels ground almost on the back looks so useful but they're usually super expensive ! I don't think I can get the same where I am unless I can get them directly from Narex or something
Nice video I carve fishing plugs , mainly out of Popular I have some chisels But for some of the carving a chisel is a must But I am just using hand power Also I have replaced the handles on several chisels to allow me to do fine work in different ways Not brute force , but Popular is soft So I will be ordering several to let me carve with style
Just finished handling my Richter set (were out of the regular narex, not disappointed though) , what a great weekend! They turned out great and are a pleasure to use. Made mine out of some scrap blood wood, using the original richter handle design. Thanks for the idea!

Very Interesting! I have never seen chisels for sale without handles. Your viewers were quick, they got over there and bought every Chisel !!! I bought one Narex with a handle (in 40mm or 1 ⁹⁄₁₆") I keep it in my carpenter tool bucket. It is a good chisel at a low cost, which is good if I accidentally hit a nail doing carpentry work. It takes a good edge.
Wow. Sold out already. But they also have kits with the excellent Richter steel. More expensive, but worth it. I like the ash handles on mine, but it might be fun to make on with a bubinga handle. Oh, and now I notice you linked them, too.
Taylor Toolworks has apparently exceeded their sales goals with just one great video by the venerable Stumpy Nubs! In fact I could not find any NAREX unhandled chisels in the US. Off for the Richters I guess. Pask is near Genius!
Great video, thanks. I look at small projects like this as great skill builders. They don't take too long, and are cheap, especially if scrap wood is used. Screw it up? Start again; it's easy enough. Save the "good" wood until you're satisified with your skill level. Cheers!
I'm sure that those are great chisels, but just for a reference, chrome-vanadium is the steel used in Narex-Richter chisels which have shown in some tests to be top notch.

I LOVE this tip. Making handles is one of the most fun woodcrafting activities you can do in my honest opinion. It's design, but then there is a very low requirement for precision since it just needs to fit your hand.
This is so helpful for me, because I'm always looking for cheaper tools.

I built this jig when I saw the Pask Makes vid and have been having fun making tool handles ever since. It is brilliant and makes the tool so much more personal when I customize it to my hand.

I'm excited. I've wanted to upgrade my construction chisels for a while but haven't been able to afford a nice set. Now I can do it sooner, and making my own handles is going to make them feel so good in my hand both physically and sentimentally.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. There are a number of ways to look at this problem. Making your own handles allows you to customize size and shape. This is key for those with different-sized hands or those who like asymmetric flat areas. On the other hand (pun, hahaha), if it takes you 1 hour to to make a handle, then your time is valued at $27/hr.

Well I took your advise and got the Narex Richard Extra handless chisel from Tayler Toolworks. It came all polished and looked great. After honing the back with 220 grit on a piece of float glass from scary sharp it still has a hollow in the back.
Wow already sold out, all sizes. A testament to how good this deal is! I'll be checking back.

I get a lot of antique tools for dirt cheap and most are missing handles and need some love. The usa steel is exceptional and making a custom handle feels great! Not to mention fixing up a tool for another 50+ years of service! Great video and tip on the jig!

Some time ago I got a set of Narex chisel blanks, with the intent of making my own handles ... thanks for a good explanation of how to do it.
Good advice. Over the winter I made handles for two slicks I bought without handles. All by hand, no lathe. And it was fun. Thanks again.
At first I thought this was a good deal but when looking further into it it appears these blades are from the narex 8105 chisels and in the uk you can get a set of six with handles already fitted for £62 Inc vat. But as pointed out it is always nice to have your tools tailored to suit and it's a nice project to do. Thanks for the video Stump and have a great weekend. Update, its just been pointed out the narex 8105 are different, the ones that stumpy was showing are more likely to be the more expensive narex 8116 that come in at £90 for a set of six. Sorry for any confusion.

Thats a crazy cheap price. I'd check they are the same spec though. Narex make a range of hardness and quality chisels.

Those are different blades than the Narex 8105s. THose blades at Workshop Heaven are the 'Bevel Edge' blades - you can see that the edge is clearly different in the 8105s than these. A set of 5 of these blades with handles is £159.90, equivalent to about $200 USD... $40 over Stumpy's link w/o handles.
Obv shipping prices might change that, but looks like handles will cost you $40 for those Ricther blades... still not terrible if you want quality but don't want to make your own handles.
I freehand my handles on my edge sander , they come out pretty well, I like wood octagon handles for my hammers too
I agree. My ugly handmade tools are definitely my pride and joy. And I customized them so that they fit me, not just your average person.
I made a grip for a cheap sword once that was sanded to loosly fit my fingers. It didn't scream out that it was designed like that but it was great to hold and was nonslip even though it was poly-coated.

I wouldn't think that much of the price would be in the handle. I would go for this. Would be a fun project.
Think about it in terms of operations and machine set-ups required. The chisels are probably forged en masse, then ground and polished on an assembly line (CNC) machine. Once you add a handle, let alone the assembly step, you're going to need some human input, and humans are expensive.
@@swolebro Breaking down lumber into blanks, machining blanks into handles, drilling the holes for the chisel, making a ferrule, adding a ferrule, finishing them and fitting them. There is a lost that has to go into it, I have no idea how much time it would take, But the step up in price is understandable

A lot of the savings are what the others have said, but there's one more big difference in people costs: small family companies don't usually have a dozen layers of middle management. A large international corporation has a lot of overhead in just being a company, but they usually add a bunch more to ensure every worker is replaceable.
Would that handle be London pattern ,best shape for a handle if you ask me.

If you melt plastic milk jugs . Roll the soft plastic. You can turn on a lathe a super handle. Just use a old toaster oven. Add color plastics to make really cool handles / knobs etc.

Wow, I've got handles. Several types my father had. Also some old chisels I have are bad but the handles are great and can be removed and possibly be reused. Thanks for the source. 😎 Plenty of scraps of good hardwoods about, too. Gives me so many ideas. 🤔😊
Years ago I started to buy second hand chisels, I got toknow which ones were of value. Most of them had no or damaged handles. Easy peasy to replace them and I didn't use a jig or a bandsaw. Still have my original handles after 20 years

I did it with the exact same jig from Pastmakes for a set of unfinished carving chisels I bought on Dictum (I live in Europe). I made them too large for detail carving chisels but I'm proud of them, the nice thing is I can always rework the handles when I have the time or need. The octogonal shape feels good in the hands ! And he also had a template for a carving knife handle too, which was nice 🙂
The chisels with side bevels ground almost on the back looks so useful but they're usually super expensive ! I don't think I can get the same where I am unless I can get them directly from Narex or something

But I am just using hand power
Also I have replaced the handles on several chisels to allow me to do fine work in different ways
Not brute force , but Popular is soft

Just finished handling my Richter set (were out of the regular narex, not disappointed though) , what a great weekend! They turned out great and are a pleasure to use. Made mine out of some scrap blood wood, using the original richter handle design. Thanks for the idea!

Very Interesting! I have never seen chisels for sale without handles. Your viewers were quick, they got over there and bought every Chisel !!! I bought one Narex with a handle (in 40mm or 1 ⁹⁄₁₆") I keep it in my carpenter tool bucket. It is a good chisel at a low cost, which is good if I accidentally hit a nail doing carpentry work. It takes a good edge.

I ordered 1/8”, 1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4” and 1”. Basically all of them, as I was just using my old chisels and I was angry at them. Bad misbehaved chisels!

Wow. Sold out already. But they also have kits with the excellent Richter steel. More expensive, but worth it. I like the ash handles on mine, but it might be fun to make on with a bubinga handle. Oh, and now I notice you linked them, too.
Taylor Toolworks has apparently exceeded their sales goals with just one great video by the venerable Stumpy Nubs! In fact I could not find any NAREX unhandled chisels in the US. Off for the Richters I guess. Pask is near Genius!
It appears the Stanley has a hollower grind on the tip. I prefer a hollower grind as it makes tuning then up much easier.

Great video, thanks. I look at small projects like this as great skill builders. They don't take too long, and are cheap, especially if scrap wood is used. Screw it up? Start again; it's easy enough. Save the "good" wood until you're satisified with your skill level.

I'm sure that those are great chisels, but just for a reference, chrome-vanadium is the steel used in Narex-Richter chisels which have shown in some tests to be top notch.
