Astalon is definitely an S tier game. I'm watching this whole series. Great stuff, thanks. It's not until I watch series like this that you realize how many games I've bought over the years.
Ender Lilies is fantastic. It doesn't do anything super innovative but the level of polish and how it combines all the elements together makes it top tier. Redo is also great and not many people have played it. It's got the right amount of mystery to keep you playing and I liked the survival horror-ish feel it had. Hard mode was just the right level of challenge too. I can't recommend it enough.
I love that you emphasize Ender Lillies’ QOL and « respecting the player’s time ». In your experience what other games « respect your time »? Ori and the will of the wisp sure did and that made it wonderful in my view.
I have played Redo! I enjoyed it, but you're right, I don't know who i'd recommend it to. It was interesting, and a bit mysterious. They're making a sequel or remake of some sort that I'm interested to see where it goes.
I was thinking about the first game you showed on the list Aggelos. I haven't played it, but it looks an awful lot like Battle of Olympus on the NES. At the time I played BoO over 30 years ago I considered it an action adventure game like Zelda, specifically Zelda 2 which it was clearly modeled after. In retrospect do you think BoO qualifies as a Metroidvania? It has most of the pre-requisites. Exploration across connected biomes, gated exploration and backtracking where you need a certain tool or power up from a different biome to get past obstacles in other biomes, a psuedo levelling system based on gaining health increasing items and more powerful gear to boost the strength of your character. A non linear path from start to completion with sequence breaking options throughout. I'm curious what other criteria are needed and also what a more experienced Metroidvania fan has to say on the matter.
I'm kind of surprised that "Risky's Revenge" is pretty low. Then again, thinking back, fair enough. I did like it myself but it was also one of those experiences that got more frustrating as it went on. Mainly regarding traversal. The further you progress, the more mobs are added everywhere with stronger mob types. Combined with a rather limited quick travel option and getting around just outright sucked after a point. Casually, it's fine enough given the overall short length of the game but it definitely isn't for 100%. "Pirate's Curse" is probably my favorite entry as well. I'd also consider it a Metroidvania. As much as I like them, I don't really consider Metroidvanias to be a genre per-se, just a general format of concepts under 2D action-platfomers. A lack of an interconnected open-world isn't really something I necessarily see as a hard qualification. As long as enough aspects are there, the sliding scale as you put it, it all works for me. And yes, I too also really liked "Ender Lilies". Probably is one of my favorites at this point.
Nice work, you've played even more metroidvanias than me. Love the videos, currently playing aeterna noctis and I think it's gonna be in my top 10, interested to hear your thoughts on this one
I think I have those on the Picker. I posted a community post with a link to a Google doc that has a list of all the games in it, if you’re interested.
Yeah. I kinda dig all 3 games and currently going through them slowly in my limited spare time. I'm really curious as to how you'd rank them once the spinner selects them.
I had quite the rollercoaster of opinions on Ender Lilies Starting - Oh this is metroidvania for babies First boss - wait this is kinda tough but pretty much just a hollow knight clone Eleine - omfg I hate this stupid f*cking game it's so unfair Most of the rest of the game - pretty tough, the spirits are pretty cool Subterranean Lab - f*ck this game, f*ck these giant spikey blobs After 100% - wow I really liked that game, I miss it, can't wait for the sequel
I passed on Ender lilies, I really don’t want to play a game where the main character is a little girl. Give me a cool main character. The trend lately of weak main characters in Metroidvanias is just annoying
@@m3diaenthusiast I think they should have just had a knight as the main character and have it change armor to different fighting styles. That would have been cool, not a little girl that fights ( and I haven’t played it so I don’t know how it works). I just really don’t like this trend.
@@huevonesunltd I do agree, but with my very limited playing time I usually am pretty picky. But if I see it cheap somewhere I get it to try. I’m play blasphemous 2 and it’s really good.

Loving this series, im going through the whole playlist. Metroidvanias and Soulslikes are my favourite genre of games. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for doing this, Astalon reminded me of Faxanadu from NES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Astalon is NESing great, thanks man!
It’s one of the best
I tried Aggelos and Astalon on a lark. Glad I did. They were great. Ender Lilies was incredible. Vigil Longest night was amazing too.
I love when youtube recommend me a great channel! Amazing idea, I have a huge amount of videos to kill now!

I absolutely love AV2's music and listen to it regularly on my ipod.

Man how does Astalon end up in your top ten of all time but not an S tear
If I’m not wrong he mention that in a honorable mentions part. I’m not sure. You can watch his video to find why

Aeterna Noctis is one I'll be playing soon. Haven't started it cuz I hear it's looooooooooong, but I think I'm ready for it.
It's hard to tell if Record of lodiss War Deedlit in Wonderlabyrinth, Valdis Story, and Sword of The Vagrant are on there.

Cuz I'm the dumbest! I fixed it. Or at least an attempt was made LOL

Ender Lilies 🤮
Rude 😆
