Definitely a high class tractor and worth rebuilding. All you need of parts are readily available, which proves that these are worth saving.

I have a Massey Ferguson 65 looks like the identical tractor you may have leaky valve stem seals but you should be able to replace them by putting air in the cylinder and removing the valve cover Maybe they're pretty awesome tractors high and low range power steering I've been using mine for quite a few years easy to work on I would stick with it

I have a 1957 Ferguson F40, exact same tractor except for sheet metal. It's definitely worth rebuilding. While it's running check the hydraulics and PTO. The engine is a Continental Z134 with wet sleeves so you can do an in-frame rebuild. A sleeve and piston kit is available for around $400 from Yesterdays Tractors. These tractors are so simple and reliable and run forever. And parts are cheap and available. I'm in the Bay Area and saw yours on Craigs List. Good luck with it.

    Yes absolutely rebuild it!!!

If I lived nearby I would even volunteer a few hours to help you rebuild it!!!!!

I would also rebuilt it. Next to oil consumption (blue-isch smoke) I also see rather white smoke = head gasket. Al least I would lift the head. And yes, please film it.

If you decide to dig deeper I’ll come along for the ride - what a great ole machine . One last of the Massey Harris line before a complete switch over to Massey Ferguson Back in the day we had a good Ferguson dealer in the area ,they placed a lot those machines on local farms .

It looks like your valve seals or guides are worn, but most likely I would say it needs rings. You might be able to hone the cylinders, but you might need to have it bored out. Most likely you can get oversized rings for this, but if not, you could get it bored and sleeved. Whatever the case, it will definitely bo better after a rebuild.

We are still waiting for an update video on this wonderful old tractor.
    How is it coming along?
Somebody needs to make that tractor look and run like brand new!
I would use the word restoration, but nobody on TH-cam seems to know what the word restoration actually means.
Some people do a few repairs on something and call it a restoration when it clearly is not.
But there's lots of people that would really love to see this thing looking better and running better!
So if you do not plan to make drastic improvements on this please find someone who will and don't let this go to the scrap yard!!!!!!!

Depending on where these were sold, it could have been sold under 3 version/name for a couple of years: Ferguson 40, Massey-Harris 50, Massey-Ferguson 50. The Massey-Ferguson 50 came with either gas or diesel option in its last couple years it was built (1963-64).
My dad's first tractor was a 1957 Massey-Harris 50, brand new, gas powered, same as yours there.
The only dad hated is that it didn't have diff-lock. Later in 1968, mom's uncle had a MF65 diesel he wanted to sell. Dad tried it and found there was no real upgrade. He bought a MF135 diesel in 1969 with a 3 bottom-plow. The MH50 stayed on the farm til 1976. Dad always hated having to sell it though.

It's worth rings and valve stem seals. What someone did was never check or change the oil in the air cleaner. In our 53 gmc pickup what I did was check the oil in the air cleaner and it was full to top with dirt. I cleaned it at 15 when a teen and put new oil in it and the rings never smoked so I did it in time.

Do a compression test and a compression leak down test.

Another thing to try is undo the air intake pipe from the
    carburetor.

    • @rustyassets

I pulled the intake pipe, but forgot to film that part. With the amount of smoke, I don't think any more testing is necessary. It just needs a full rebuild.

Mosquito killer! Rings, valve guides or valve seals. The seals would be the easiest fix. Definitely worth fixing even if you have to overhaul the engine.

  • @stephenwest2476
    @stephenwest2476 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don't know how long that tractor sit but I'm assuming at the Rings are probably stuck and it probably just needs to be ran it also could be the valve stem seals and depending on the hours of the tractor could just need a complete overhaul but I don't believe you have a water problem in your system I think that was just condensation from sitting

I would use 15W40 & toss in some Lucas oil for good measure. Give her a good shot of Barium in the fuel tank & it might tighten up after it cleans out the combustion chamber. If the rings are toast heavier oil is a cheap solution.

after tractors have set a long time it's not uncommon that U have 2 clean the points 😮😮 next clean sparkplugs if there's no spark they ready 4 the trash can the distributor cap may be bad it doesn't suppose 2 have no cracks in it and if the rotor button is bad replace 😊😊 I thought the engine would clear up it didn't that tells me the engine needs 2 be overhauled new main and rod bearings cam bearings and new valve guides 😊😊 and anything else the engine needs and U should check cylinder head and the engine block W a straight edge W a feeler gauge U shouldn't be able 2 get the feeler gauge under the straight edge 😊😊 if not that's means the cylinder head and the engine block both needs 2 be shaved that will have 2 be done at a machine shop and U should have the machine shop 2 check crank and the cam shaft 2 see if it needs 2 be built back up they have 2 weld it and turn it back 2 specs I would overhaul the engine and keep the tractor 😊😊 OMG 9 16 2O23

If it sat for a long time, you would see that much condensation in motor let alone rings could be stuck and allowed some few in there too. Need to put it under load and work at operating temperature and see what happens. What's condition of plugs? How much blowby? Not a head gasket. Sounds like it needs valves adjusted.
