Have you tried the other side of the board? I think I remember reading that should make the solo game a bit harder as well. And I read that there will be more difficult action tiles released as print and play along with the campaign (i assume all standard tiles will be included as part of that print and play too)

The opposite side does lower the player score a bit, but I don't think it entirely fixes the scoring issue.
I am VERY hopeful for how the campaign will change things up though.

Great Review Mike. I appreciate you covering the game just from a solo perspective. Have you played Viscounts of the West Kingdom yet? Considering picking up either Viscounts or Lost Ruins as they both feel very similar, but can't decide which one would be better for mostly solo play.
I have not. At first I was going to ignore it, since I didn’t enjoy Paladins of the West Kingdom much, but now that I’ve heard there is deckbuilding in Viscounts I am cautiously interested.
@@OneStopCoopShop Yeah, I love deck building and want to try one of these hybrid worker placement/ deck builders. Just can’t decide which one to go with. My FLGS has both in stock right now.
Arnak is certainly solid, and they added more variants for solo as PNP to increase difficulty, and the campaign is coming. So it should keep improving
Viscounts is amazing solo, Arnak is too easy win every time and every game the same
@@rawnsleymaths5949 it looks like the new solo stuff they've added (though you have to download it/print it out) addresses that major complaint of mine. As for Viscounts, it's definitely on my list. Too many people recommending it to ignore ;)
Hey Mike, a very good and honest review, as always. I am glad your'e not onboard the hype train. Between Dune and Arnak, I think it's Arnak for me as well since I am mostly playing solo or 2ppl.
It should be ideal for those counts, though I will say I think the dune AI will work better for 2-player than 1-player
getting both this and sanctum this friday... never found your review of sanctum... is it still in your collection?
I didn't do a review of Sanctum, since the solo was a free add-on and not a major portion of the original game. But overall I really enjoy it, though once you've played it 4 times (once with each character), I think you'll be hoping for an expansion!

Good review. I know it's been awhile since you played, but how do you feel about the length? The end of the game feels abrupt to me.
Yeah, I think you can be right, but it’s certainly how everything is balanced. I often reach the end of the research track and uncover a level 2 site or two at the end, so if it went one more round there wouldn’t be a lot to do ;)
@@OneStopCoopShop Interesting. Granted I have only played multiplayer but we hardly ever touch the research track before time runs out.

I had similar thoughts about the game. Seeing (doing) the same stuff over and over. That in itself is enough to have me pass on the game.
Dune? (comparing the 2 games) I definitely like the combat. It seems to be different. Also, I like the Dune theme more, given I enjoyed the book a lot.
Yeah, the combat is pretty neat, and better I imagine in multiplayer where the swinginess is reduced
Hey Mike, if you haven't, try new, lvl 3, pnp tiles. I was beating AI on regular basis, but it's destroying me now.

Hhmm, I was really hoping you would find both Dune and Lost Ruins of Arnak to be amazing games. I have both on pre-order, but was hoping they would both be fantastic solo games.

@@OneStopCoopShop And that's why I keep the subscribe button on for now. I'm not interested in something that's not your personal opinion. Mixed or negative reviews are so rare these days because everyone is bought and paid for, but it's also the thing I actually look for when wanting a new game, the purely positive ones are a dime a dozen.
@@calamariaxo yeah, in a way I almost feel like my job is to tamp down hype, in a lot of cases. There are so many forces convincing us to BUY BUY BUY the newest games already :)

Most overhyped game of 2020. At least at BGG.
I think it's pretty fun, and I like that CGE is continuing to support it (the solo campaign is coming, and they announced a harder solo play mode to address complaints like mine).
But yeah, it's not the most amazing game I've played this year by a long shot :)
