I was lucky enough to see Nucci live three times. Once in Lucia and twice in Rigoletto. He was sensational every time.

I first heard Maestro Nucci as Rossini's Figaro. It was a sensation because of his technical security, effortless delivery and superb stagecraft - here was a ' barbiere' who combined thrilling vocal athleticism and superb comic timing. He brought the house down. Shortly afterwards he made his debut at Covent Garden in Luisa Miller - the cast included Pavarotti and Ricciarelli. This time my impression was that the ' tinta' of the voice required by Verdi was not natural to him and was something he had to consciously manufacture. If ever there was an example of a great singing mind over matter, it is surely Maestro Nucci, for not only did he achieve this feat and convince the operatic world in the decades to come that he was indeed a Verdi baritone, but in the wake of Cappuccilli, Zancanaro Bruson and Milnes, he has for many years been THE Verdi baritone and is still singing magnificently at 73. Sir Georg Solti described him as the most technically aware singer he had ever worked with and would advise students in all fachs to make a study of his artistry. Listening to his many outstanding recordings and watching his work on DVD, I can only agree. "Ecco il leone"..

I just wish the clip didn't cut Leo Nucci's fantastic high note. he's marvelous as always! I had the fortune to see him live as Rigoletto just a few months before this masterclass. Always fantastic!

Perché Leo Nucci in realtà _è_ un tenore. Ha cantato tutta la vita da baritono (e a mio avviso è riuscito a costruirsi una voce scura tutto sommato credibile), ma è un tenore. Nella tradizione la sua voce era nota come _tenore corto,_ cioè cantante non ricchissimo di bassi con tendenza (ancorché non troppo spiccata) all'acuto. Purtroppo un tenore povero d'acuti non sfonda... Meglio focalizzarsi sui ruoli baritonali, magari scurendo la voce (spesso e volentieri ingolata quando è costretta a superare il re centrale) per "colorarla" da baritono.
