People should mention lifespan more often in videos like this. These little guys live a looong time, like 12-15yrs, I believe. It's quite a commitment. Darts are amazing though. I love the enclosures as much as the frogs, the good ones that is.

I need ur opinion man.. i have two poisons and they’re roughly abt 4-6 months old. One of them got huge and is fat, the other one is shy and always hiding and is small skinny and fragile and doesnt move much. Im so scared for the little skinny one, i have her in quartine rn to see if she’ll eat when the other one isnt there. Can you please give me some advice?😢 (i feed them both tiny micro crickets)

I had an exo terra 12x12x18 laying around & wanted to keep something in it, but I was really limited. It was originally for my crested gecko when she was a baby, & after finding Josh's Frogs I was introduced to the wonderful world of thumbnail dart frogs. I did research on the most bold & beautiful thumbnails & chose R. imitator "Tarapoto". It's been such a joy though there aren't many sources specifically about the smaller guys, especially breeding, which mine started almost immediately. It's a goal of mine to post to TH-cam about it / my pets :)

Dart Frogs are awesome. I love our Phyllobates vittatus, they are colourful, active and their call is beautiful. Our group of five have been providing us with lots of tadpoles/froglets. To be honest, I love all our frogs: Dendrobates tinctorius, Dendrobates cobalts and Ranitomeya sirensis! 🐸🐸🐸

My favorite dart is the bumblebee! To me they are so cute with their black masked faces and yellow "hats" on top. Ours are quite bold too. Feeding-wise, if you want to look into it, you can try bean beetles. They're easy to keep and gives the darts some variety.

    • @muurrarium9460
      @muurrarium9460 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Mine absolotely *hated* the beetles. They would catch them, spit them out and ignore ever after.
Bu yes, pinheads are the worst: they get everywhere.
So I'll stick to both varieties or fruitflies, aphids etc. (Bioactive bottoms, so they probably snack on the pillbugs as well.)

I have to say that at least one of those Azureus looks alarmingly skinny. Of course I don’t know about the background of that frog but I’d definitely separate it from the rest of the group immediately, especially since tinctorius are known to be territorial and bully each other.

I'm currently converting an old 35 gallon hex aquarium into a front opening viv (definitely a bit of work pulling off this conversion & setup but I'm happy with how it's coming out) for all the froglets building up lol, think I have around 15 froglets right now and another 20 tadpoles lol.

Mr. Adam Sir. I keep Dendrobates tinctorius 'Citronella'. I love em. Your video was spot on.
When I made up my terrarium using spray foam and dry lock, I added some medicine pill bottles, the red/orange ones you get for prescriptions, and embedded them in the foam. I cut off the back sides, so it was a hollow tube. I embedded them in the foam. The frogs LOVE these as hides. What is really nice, too, is that if you get them flush against the back/side of the terrarium, you can then view them in the hide from the side/back of the terrarium. Gives a neat perspective.
I also added a couple of inches of a rock layer, with a substrate barrier in mine. With the humidity that high, it is a good idea.
For the humidity, I just used a cheap party fogger that I found on Amazon for $40. Put it on a timer, and it works great.
Your content is great. Not too sure about why you felt you had to mention that you shouldn't put dart frogs in your orifices, but whatever. lol
    Keep up the great work.

We have D auratus, and we love them. One of them is actually pretty bold, the other two are newer and younger, and still hide quite a bit. But they are so fun to watch, and they're a major talking point anytime we have company.
In addition to fruit flies, we also feed them confused flour beetles, which are incredibly easy to maintain a constant supply of, even easier than fruit flies.

I don’t own any dart dogs at present but my husband is interested…I admit to not knowing the species names but the blue ones seem to be his favorite

How do you keep the fruit flies in the enclosure with a screen lid, is the mesh small enough that they don’t escape?

Where’d you get your San Isabels? They’re my favorite species and I’ve been thinking about getting a few🐸

4:25 they need more hides. All of that is good but in the wild they have multiple places to go and run to in the case of a predator. They hang around stumps, terrestrial bromeliads, burrows, rocks, stuff like that on hills and flat ground. So when making your vivarium put as many hides as you can in your back ground (foaming on cork rounds is a perfect way to do this) and then have crevices and plenty hides in the back of the bottom of the tank (stacked cork once again is a great way to do this). Have large leaf litter rather than small obviously. And plants, aroids, bromeliads especially, ect are good

I've been to where these are in the wild, they hide under leaf litter and low hanging leaves. Offer as much leaf litter as shown and you're golden. :)

@@WickensWickedReptiles they do hide under that but often have other hides to retreat to other than a coconut half, leaf litter, and plants. They will take advantage of any extra hides you give them in captivity. Leaf litter, plants, and coconut half is all great things to have (except when you have too small of leaf litter for the frog to hide under which I don't think you do I just see many people that do) but more hides will be appreciated by these frogs and in the wild they will have more hides and ways to escape a predator than just this. You've been to where they are, I don't know if you observed what's around them when you find them but often it's a burrow, wood, rock, or a bromeliad or heavy foliage to escape into. they don't just live out in the open for any predator or thing to snatch them up. And if they don't have many hides in their tank you should provide a lot of large leaf litter for all the hiding they need.

A lot of people don’t recommend mist systems because of fungus and different bacteria’s that can become aerosolized. What do you think??

So im in the process of building a a 40 breeder, ive been watching your videos for a few weeks now. The other day i came across a video of yours saying that you can cohab dart frogs with mourning geckos. So my question is are there specific dart frogs that share similar parameters with Mourning geckos? Or is this doable with most darts? Thanks. Your videos are great, super informative, and inspirational!

They are fine with most denrobates species. I would avoid thumbnail (could be a snack for mourning geckos) and I would avoid terribilis since they can get big enough to eat the young of mourning geckos

What's a good beginner dart frog that's pretty quiet? I'm really interested in getting into dart frogs but I live in an apartment and can't have a species that is very loud
