Among annoying people, it's always "cool" to make fun of whatever teenage girls like. It's fortunate that I'm not the only one outside her core demographic who loves her songs. Most girls in her position don't get to be so beloved so early on. She's on the verge of commanding the same respect that Taylor Swift took over a decade to build, and some people still hate on Taylor.
I think Olivia's songs are just that good. Her writing is distinctive, and together with Dan Nigro's production, she has a sound that's diverse but still feels like it has the same human touch. I love how she embraces grungy guitars and heady drums when she wants to. I love how her vocals don't have obvious pitch correction, so we can hear her breathtaking vocal runs and her punky imperfection, whatever she decides to display.
It's insane how her songs' lyrics, being so reflective of a teenage girl in a specific romantic situation, tap into something so universal within us. As a metalhead dude who has never been through a breakup (still with my first partner), I can recognize Olivia's talent just as much as I can recognize how innovative Ichirou Agata's guitar playing is. The only difference is that 99% of people find his playing overwhelming, but everyone can appreciate a lovesick ballad.
