    4 years later, I was told to come check out the comments. Spent half hour reading them. I’m doing very good incase anyone was wondering, I graduated high school in 2019, 12 days after giving birth to my son🤗 I was also Valedictorian. It was a great year for me! One day i’m gonna go back out for college and study welding and recreation. I love doing hands on work and working with the youth, its a bond that i’ll never want to break, they’re our future. Thank u all.

    I am First Nation myself. Let me tell you, one of the reasons why we don't move on from the intergenerational trauma, which caused psychological damages by assimilation, it's because there usually isn't support for it, especially not enough recognition about who NATIVE AMERICANS were as a peoples, and how they struggle to keep their decaying culture alive. The only support comes from the numbness of drugs & alcohol. Once you carry that lifestyle around a child, that is what the child is going to see as normal. But it is not just the substances that have affected the peoples. In residential schools, a wrong doing meant a severe punishment. This concept of 'learning' carried onto the helpless native students. So as they get older and have children themselves, the same traumatic experience they endured at the schools will have an impact on their kids. It's not rocket science to figure out why the Native Americans are suppressed.

    Tragic!! NO parent or child, should EVER have to make the decision between an education and having your child with you safely at home! EVER!!! These children deserve so much more than what they are getting! My heart goes out to them and their families. This is such a tender and important age, where a child needs both the guidance and stability of their families and their traditions. This is heartbreaking at its best. These are families steeped in traditions and are forced to trust another human being to care for their precious child, during such a tender and informative age.

    How About build student accommodation/dorms near the high school to host those students? The price of building them is nothing compared to the price of a human life.

    • @Ms40Watts
      @Ms40Watts 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Ali AlOwais This would be assuming that the life of a FN individual was worth something in the eyes of those who have held the ability to make lasting changes throughout the last several decades. There are so many UNSOLVED murders of indiginous people in Canada, it isn't even remotely amusing. And then again did you actually watch the program? There's no high school avail past Gr 8 on this particular reservation (as is the case of others) so why bother building dorms for a non-existent school?

    • @AliAlOwais
      @AliAlOwais 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ms40Watts What I meant here is to build the student accommodation near the high schools where those students go to in the main city (not in their communities).
      If no one tries to improve the conditions, then it'll stay as it is , if not worse.
      It's just a suggestion that i wish goes heard and some improvements are made.
      It's really devastating, especially coming from Canada.

      canada was part for the british empire after we became independent and the empire dissolve the canadian government just kept going with the old british colonial reserve/residential school system still thinking it works cause it "worked" for the british empire. Canada still looks up to the empire in how they dealt with the natives and the french in the past and so they continue it, really the canadian government is clueless on how to fix and change this so they stick with this system to play it safe. Unless america comes up with a better system that makes its way to canada or the british government somehow interferes calling it a mistake and dismantles the reserve system nothing will change in canada. Another example of the empires influence is when canadians see french canadians outside quebec they dont like that under british rule the french had to stay in quebec the ones living out had to assimilate by force killing french/metis/native culture and language outside quebec at the time. canada still has the way the british ran things ingrained in their minds, (french stay in quebec, natives stay in the reserves, etc etc.) Still like this in 2018.

In Toronto there is a Native Friendship Center, you can get information about secluded communities there. Then you can start making plans to actually make a difference for these kids. There's no money or fundings to build highschool. Or to make classrooms would be the best way with cost make some classrooms from trailers for them would even be good. But even if that got to happen. There's no teachers that would go that far without getting paid a lot of money. Would be a nice world if we had teachers that would do it just to teach. But I would even want to be paid something cuz. I have kids and there not free either. They cost just as much as my wife. Well maybe not as much as my wife she cost more. Lol.

      Have you ever gone to a reservation and sat down with these people and talked to them about what has happened to them ? I agree that yes able bodied people should definitely get the hell out there and work. I also agree that there are many people in reservations who love terribly and have no respect for their surroundings as do many white people we call white trash or whatever do as well. But i have seen both sides and I have witnessed how they are treated in a daily basis whether at work or at school and it is a disgrace . Also we aren't talking about Russia .

      I'm not talking about sending children away to residential schools, I'm talking about children being educated in small (one room if necessary) schools in their own communities.
      A great modern example is the Hutterite community who educate all ages of their children, right on colony property.

    Is distance education offered as an option?
    All parents with a high school education are qualified to provide quality home schooling education. However I know Ontario does not provide much support for home schooling.
    These children need more options open to them. Options that allow them to meet education and social needs.
    Teacher/Tutor in the home communities?
    Thunder Bay is a very long way to go for school. However I am impressed with the commitment the staff has made to provide as much care as possible to "their" children.
    The idea of my child leaving home in the ninth grade terrifies me. The parents of these children also need supports in place.

      Hey, just a random question. Is ILC Distance Education (ilc.org) available in First Nation Communities? I completed a fair portion of my high school education studying from home (or abroad) using ILC. I found it to be easy and convenient. My family traveled a lot, so some semesters I wasn't able to attend a regular high school.

    • @nobecausereasons
      @nobecausereasons 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, many (though not all!) First Nation reserves have inadequate internet speed connections for distance education, or even for using online-based classroom services like google drive or google classroom. They have internet, but the service provided to the communities is often sub-par and in rural fly-in communities, if the connection goes down you may have to wait for a representative to be flown in to fix the issue, which could take days or weeks.

Make gov't have residents where the kids that attend these schools can live. Safe and secure with on site security and crisis moble units available . I know all this means more money but the gov't needs to do whatever it takes for truth and reconciliation . Like all college students have a residence where the students live. Make sure your schools, agencies and organizations are being offer First Nation awareness programs. If everyone did one thing to advocate for our children, we could fix the errors of the past. The children are our future, they deserve the same rights as every other child in Canada.

    But I don’t go to Thunder Bay, it’s too chaotic. Most parents don’t want to send their children out to Thunder Bay, but I go to Sioux Lookout.
    What makes it worse is that I lost my dad a little over a year ago, I had to leave and deal with the grief on my own. Leaving my little family with the same grief is a lot harder, I worry most for my sister and my mother.
    Y’know, I look at my younger nieces and nephews and their friends and hope that they don’t have to go through this. I am from one of the lucky communities that goes up to grade 10, It’s hard leaving home, I hope this changes.

    I'm the sixtiescoop survivor and I'm in the circle of all the survivors growing up or grew up without my family its been a rough journey being raised in foster care, I had so many foster homes I lost count, I was scooped up at the age of 6 years old and I had problems with my academics because I felt isolated from the world losing my identity, language and my heritage. I hear all the stories about the survivors and I know it all too well. What was stolen from me from those I belonged will never be regained. I've lived my life in darkness and loneliness is only in despair all my 66 years of my life. The fear growing up had no straight roads to follow, but I survived somehow there was one foster home that I was placed in at a later year in my life that I felt welcomed, they were extremely wonderful and I still keep them informed of my well being, but its a huge void to lose the real family you beonged. I still struggle on a day to day basis and it never gets any easier. The traumatic events that I endured growing up in foster care are only a shadow away. Never feeling a belonging, facing racism, bullying makes me wonder how I survived. I ran away at a young age of 10 and I would continue to keep running away from the abusers, no child should be made to feel uncomfortable by being touched and to be made to feel ugly. The pain I grew up had a deep scar that I carried to this day and I will leave this world feeling discriminated. I only hope changes can be moved forward and keep children from being scooped from their comfort zone.

    • @Ms40Watts

      +Susan Kuypers 'as Canadians we should be ashamed….' I'd think the majority are ashamed of the government but how many folks won't get behind an issue and do something about it; i.e.; a refusal to pay taxes by all Canadians (majority) in order to fight for the most basic of human rights, unfortunately is not likely to happen. I'd think the overall problem lies with three things; 1. The media reporting rarely on subjects as above (human face to the severity of circumstances) and instead reports on how many millions of dollars is given every year and that FN Band Members do not allocate properly, not to mention perpetuating the cycle of 'abuse' in the sense of stereotyping/racism in terms of a consistent need to report on trivial matters of a FN person being drunk or having committed yet another crime so for many folks they aren't getting the real issues that FN people are suffering from. 2. The Blame Game = FN, Government AND others who live in Canada all pointing a finger at one another instead of panels of people gathering together to insist on changes and incorporating those changes immediately, whereby trusting one another could alter (hopefully with time) the landscapes of crisis on reservations and 3. A general lack of compassion and empathy whereby not being able to 'walk a mile in another's moccasins' to at the very least imagine how you, yourself (not you personally) would feel if those shoes were on your feet. Too many of us are complacent, too willing to just accept what is and not fight for what is right; our most basic of human needs being fulfilled. ALL children have a right to education and ALL people have a right to feel safe and in this have a decent place to live, which sadly isn't the case with many FN people. Cycles of abuse and poverty will continue until more people like Shannen (the young 15 year old girl who fought for a right to have a school on her reservation near James Bay… not even going to attempt to spell it right now) don't stand up and shed that overwhelming feeling that their voice makes no difference. 15 attempted suicides or succeeding at it, only alters your own life permanently and your loved ones life. I think FN have to get a group of young people involved on EVERY Rez across Canada and draw on the media to help make a lasting change, not just a bunch of words 'promising' crap from government officials that never happens. Blessing's (Apology for the length)

    I'm from North Dakota. And yes, I'm white. I went to school with a boy who's First Nations in ND. We adopted each other as siblings. So, can I say there's racism & discrimination. You're damn right there is! And it has to stop. But, I can also say from experience growing up in ND that aggression doesn't work. Shannon's way WILL work. You don't have to yell. But, persistence will ALWAYS win! Remember, a mosquito bite can be the most irritating bite of all. And it can't be ignored no matter how hard you try. I wish I could have known Shannon. But, she lives on in all the other kids. Kids of all ages.

    Eff'n US and Canadian Governments. Give these Indian nations the respect, education, and ANY assistance needed to make THE Indians "whole" again as well as allowing them to practice their native language and cultures. If I would ever become President, this crap of how Indians are treated is going to come to a screeching stop.

    I feel sick to my stomach. I cried watching this, rocking my baby to sleep and cradling my eldest in my arms as she slept. I cannot imagine having to face the horror of sending them so far away for what every child should readily have access to, an education. I am heartbroken. I heard and felt the despair. How can we expect people to thrive when we keep them under duress? The answer is we obviously do not want them to thrive. Why?! I don't understand why "the white man" must keep all for himself. Makes me ashamed to be a Canadian.

      Theman getting an online education, for some First Nations, is difficult because of the slow internet. Can't do all this and that with the wifi being so slow. Last semester in my technology class, I had to do a research on which tech-field position interested me the most, I wanted to do a bit of research and I couldn't even load pages.

      Hailey Starla which means the government has to invest in the infrastructure for the first nations. I bet it will be cheaper and better in the long run for the economy if they did.
