  • With the initials 'SCG', it was fitting that Stuart MacGill dominated in Sydney.
    On his 49th birthday, enjoy his 12-wicket haul against England from 1999, which helped Australia retain the Ashes 3-1.

      @@sugs1191 Murali didn't spin it as much as Warne or macgill. Granted that they're different types of spinners, Murali never turned it as much and as often as the other two. The main reason Murali was so successful was his doosra, accuracy and action. Sure he spun the ball a long way now and then, but never as consistently as Warne or macgill did.

      MacGill just wasn't very adaptable. In the right conditions, his massive sidespin would make him a true threat, but in conditions that were unsuitable for big spin, he had no weapons. Unfortuantly, Australia has lots of grounds that don't offer big turn, which is why his record at grounds like Adeliade and the Gabba are poor. Warne however could thrive in any conditions, because he was able to use his topspin and drift more effectively, making him a threat on any wicket (and also not giving up freebies when the game was against them). MacGill could do some magic stuff, but Warne could just do better more consisently, whilst giving up less runs and being a far better batter and fielder.

    It's interesting that MacGill turns the ball more than Warne and yet does not achieve the same degree of drift through the air. I can only guess that this is to do with the angle of the spin, and that Warne probably bowled his stock leg-spin delivery with more top spin than MacGill. Evidence for this seems to be that Warne did at times turn the ball as much as Macgill, such as his delivery to Andrew Strauss, and this may have been when he increased the degree of side spin of his leg break. That said his lack of drift could also be a result of MacGill's more round-arm delivery action reducing the trajectory of the delivery. Does anyone have any idea?

    Many comments here about how MacGill could have been this and should have been that. Couple of reminders. This is a highlight reel of, I assume, his best wicket haul. And it's at the SGC, known for it's turn. Being a leg spinner is a tough gig. When you're getting wacked around the ground, you have to find a way. And accuracy and consistency is rare in a leg spinner, so it's difficult to keep your place in a side because leggies can be very expensive, especially on wickets that don't offer a lot. So a permanent place is unlikely unless you can bat.

      @@eyecontrol4900 you can't say that for sure, and Lyon's handy with the bat. Lyon has the track record and he's an off spinner, different kettle of fish. Like I said, consistency will leg spinners, it's more difficult to bowl and lends itself to being scored off too freely. The captain will soon lose confidence too. Take a look at who is more expensive, Lyon (longish career) or MacGill.

    • @arconeagain
      @arconeagain 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eyecontrol4900 no I just looked it up, MacGill has a better bowling average than Lyon. However, Lyon has played more than double the tests and has almost twice the wickets. So was it a durability thing with MacGill, or form, I can't remember his exit.

    • @EarlJohn61
      @EarlJohn61 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arconeagain it was that his career was concurrent with Warne... He rarely could get a game as the sole spinner unless Warne was injured.
      And early on Warne was considered to be Australia's second spinner behind Tim May.
      So he was only selected to either bowl with Warne, or replace Warne when Warne was injured in the later part of Warne's (& his) career.
      By the time Warne retired, MacGill only had about one year left in his career & the selectors were looking for longer term options.
      Had MacGill been born 5 years earlier, he would've walked into the Australian team as their first pick, and Warne would be almost unknown. Except maybe as MacGill's backup.

    What a spell of bowling! He really could give a rip and could spin the ball further than warned but unfortunately every over contained a “four” ball. In even though he played in the same era as Warne he still took over 200 wickets. Without a doubt he would of taken over 500 wickets if he was to of played in any other era
