- There are a lot of theories going around about who 22 becomes in the Pixar universe. Well here are my thoughts on the matter! Did 22 become Riley from Inside Out? Did they turn into Mei Lee from Pixar’s upcoming film Turning Red? Could it be possible for 22 to actually be WALL-E?! Today I’m sharing what I think happened to 22 after they descended to Earth. Let’s revisit the ending of Soul to uncover her true fate and what might have happened to her. Honestly, all I hope is that she’s jazzing!

I honestly think 22 became the cool eyeshadow girl in Inside Out. Not just because she’s Asian and could have immigrated to San Francisco, but in the end credits she is shown to have a lot of fear being hidden behind a cool facade, much like 22 in the movie Soul.

I fully expected 22 to be born as Joe's child. They drop hints of Joe's 'relationship' with a woman named Lisa throughout the movie, so I was expecting her to show up at the end with their baby, and Joe recognizes them as 22. In the end though, it's probably better left unsaid who 22 becomes.

Agreed. 22 being an already known character takes away the imagination for me. It leaves the viewers more freedom to imagine what 22’s life will be like

I like the idea that 22 is just 22. They are their own character. 22 becoming an already known Pixar character, for me, ruins all the imagination viewers can have. As far as I’m concerned 22 ended up being born in Asia, living their life happily. And I’m fine with knowing just that.

She'll just probably become a minor character in a upcoming Pixar film or like a background character that never talks. Id love to see that.
Not only that, but it completely goes against the entire point of the film, which says that "chosen ones" don't exist, and that you don't need to have one explicit purpose. To make them into an important, beloved pre-existing character would be shooting the film's message in the back.

Hopefully they’ll make another soul movie though.. where joe is older and 22 is the age “22”. Then she and him gets in an accident and they both meet again in the great beyond as she helps him find his meaning for life again.
Twenty-two might still end up in outside of Asia even if born there: her family could move or she could be adopted
That’s what I theorized in a comment on another channel. We don’t know if she was born on a vacation, being station in the military, or if the family just moved. She could be Riley if Riley was conceived or born in China but still either born or just raised in the U.S.A.

She seemed to have a rather enlightened perspective on living for an unborn soul, so maybe she became the next Dalai Lama. She was aimed right at Tibet.
The fact that Mai Lee is already modeled, rigged, and animated in both her human and panda form, AND the fact that Pixar decided to release the film in 2022 just seems too perfect to not be intentional! 22 has got to be Mai Lee!

To be fair, considering how *long* it takes to make movies- especially animated movies- I don’t think the year is intentional, just more coincidental.

Mei Lee was born around the year 1990 (the movie Turning Red takes place in the year 2002).
1990 was well before smart phones like Joe's student Caleb was using at the opening scene of Soul (probably taking place around year 2019-2020).

I shall correct you with the power of hindsight after watching Turning Red:
1. Turning Red takes place in 2002, when Meilin Lee is 13, hence she was born in 1989
2. Even though she is of Chinese ancestry, Turning Red takes place in Toronto, Canada, nowhere near China.

Would be cool if there would come Soul 2. Soul 2 could be about 22. Maybe she kept her memories from her whole life before and she is trying to find Joe. But Joe is an old man by now and is about to die. And she wants to help him to live on and is trying to get him to the great before to start new from the beginning.
The Filmmakers scrapped a few ideas (interviewed):
Docter: We did a couple of 'em, but the one that I was thinking of was that Joe is a teacher and he hears a knock at the door and there's a kid who's like, "I really don't like piano." The mom's like, "Come on, Mr. Garner is going to teach you," and she does these little things that Joe's like, "Wait a second. I know who that is..." And yet, somehow it wasn't satisfying. It just wasn't satisfying. We had a couple of other ones too.
Murray: We talked about so many different ideas, but it felt weird that she would end up in New York. Like, there's the entire world and they both end up there. So, I think we had one version that she was in India and you see her in a moment as a baby and you could tell it's her.

I'm with you on this one, Isaac. 22 became a normal person who enjoyed the supposedly little things in life. Granted, Mei's parents could simply move to wherever she ends up growing up before Turning Red's story even starts, but I don't think we should put the burden of following Soul up on. that movie anyway. The Pixar Theory is fun, yes, but we can have the movies stand on their own. I do look forward to how you and your peers tackle Luca though!

Can you do a theory about what could happened to Snow White's father, The King, before the events of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves? Ok, hear me out with an open mind, I’ve a few points to point out and bring attention to.
1. The Spirit realm is not bound by time. They can defy time- go back in it or go forward in time.
2. I’m positive that Earth isn’t the ONLY planet in space that has life.
But for the sake of not confusing the audience and the limited window of time and context- they’re focusing on ONE of the planet portals and that’s Earth.
3. Perhaps not all souls are destined for one era in time, as we see everyone diving towards Earth, the individual souls could be “assigned” a time to go to- forwards or backwards.
4. With the few points that I presented- go watch the trailer for Raya.

this is gonna sound strange but it bothers me that the souls ONLY go to Earth. If I was a new soul I'd want to go to a planet far far FAAAAAAR away from Earth's solar system.

I most likely think my headcannon is that 22 is Mei Lee since she went to the place where the origin of the red panda is and that her personality so far fit’s 22’s. Also, the movie literally comes out in 2022!

This might seems crazy, as it have nothing to do with Pixar. I believe that theyll become the Perseverance Soul from Undertale for a couple reasons
1. 22's pass have a Donkey as the core symbol, hinting towards their core personality trait being stubbornness, with Perservance and Stubbornness being so similar
2.The ball game quote for the Perseverance soul(Even when you felt trapped, you took notes and achieved the end of "Ball.") Implies that they're curious and like to take notes about their surroundings.

Unfortunately by your logic:22 is NOT Mei Lee. Turning Red took place around 2002 and 2003 and 22 is born after 2018(Since Stephens Hawking is shown to be one of 22's mentor and died in 2018) Its possible that 22 will appear in Turning Red as Mei's Kid or something similar(Maybe shes retelling the events of the movie in order to helps them with their powers/Anxiety?)
I kind of wish the post credit scene showed 22 in a body one day seeing Joe and Joe thinking about how similar she is to the soul he met in the afterlife
22 could be Lisa's future daughter (Lisa was mentioned in the film and she could've traveled to Asia when Joe wasn't ready for a relationship. She could've been in an abusive relationship with a man from Asia, had a kid with him, and left him; then moved back to New York after she had it.) Lisa and Joe could've ended up together sometime after the events of 'Soul'.
Lol, I don't even know why I thought this, but I'm leaning more towards 22 being that girl from 'Turning Red'.

Other movies have done a similar thing to this, but Soul is one of those movies that doesn't reveal that it is all an act

I don’t think 22 is Mei. Soul is set in the present day (around 2020) and 22 jumped to earth around this time, meaning they were born in 2020. There hasn’t been a movie from pixar set in 2021-2100 yet, therefore I don’t think 22 has appeared in a pixar movie yet
22 will either be someone we haven't met yet or is Riley.
I think 22 was likely born as some random person in Southeast Asia.
Also, she will likely never know anything of her adventures with Joe before she was born. In addition, she will probably never meet Joe again.

I think because she has been there for so long that she may have dreams about all the events that unfolded when she is alive and she would recognize joe from those visions but just won’t remember who is he as in his person. But when she meantions most of the events that happens he will recognize her as 22
